gplracer
Not much blue out there in the vintage line unless you get a Tudor or a GMT. Well....... I guess.......... It is time to start the research for a 1680..... While I have everyone here in the living room.... does someone want to give me some quick advice. I would like a good case that takes an eta movement, a really good dial that I do not have to cut the feet off of. I would hate to do that to a gen dial. It just does not seem right to rape it like that. Edited December 24, 2011 by gplracer
freddy333
Nicely put Back in the 60s, if you saw a Rolex Sub on someone's wrist, you naturally assumed he was a professional (or serious) diver. Seeing a modern Sub on someone's wrist carries an altogether different connotation & the word professional never enters into it.

preacher62
Good point, but I believe there is more to it besides just not wanting to appear as another wealthy sheep in the luxury market herd. Vintage Subs (& other Rolex sports watches) were designed like tools, with little or no bling (how much gold & diamonds are needed in a hammer when nailing a nail) & that, I believe, is why they have endured & gained so much in value over the years. I am not sure...all these responses resonate with me, but I think this is my point, as well. (I have been thinking about Panarais lately, because I do not actually know anyone who has one.) JoeyB
The newer models have no character or soul... Now when you're feelin' low and the Sub ain't right You need a little bit o' soul to put you right You gotta mod that watch and kneel and pray And then a little bit of soul will come your way Now when the shiny is gone and it's broke in two You need a little bit o' soul to see you through And when you raise a wrist with your rock'n'roll You'll get a lot more kicks with a little bit o' soul And when your new watch fails 'cause ain't nobody groovin' A little bit o' soul and it really starts movin', yeah And when it's in a mess and you feel like cryin' Just remember this RWG is fine And as you go through mods tryin' to reach your goal Just remember what I said about a little bit o'soul A little bit o' soul, yeah (a little bit o' soul)
jellytots
Vintage subs are like fine well - they age well, and can almost only get better with age and careful use. I don't think modern subs would ever see the kind of provenance Their predecessors did. They hark back to an era where watches were used and even abused, yet kept on ticking with single-minded purpose. That's class. (null)
cjjoyce1
nice post Freddy, looks like one Redford has the stem pulled out It is, and it just may be on purpose by the director or prop master. I've heard it said that on many film sets, the watches aren't running if they are conspicuous in the shot. That way, when they "go back to one" to reshoot a shot, the watch is at the same time in each take. That way when the final cut comes out, the actors watch doesn't say 2:15 when he answers the phone, but 12:45 when he hangs up.
tabularasa415
I think there is one simple answer to the OP's question: "The name is Bond, James Bond."
