Kleif Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 Hello! Is it common for reps to have dust on the dial / under the crystal? I really want a Tudor Black Bay, but I'm afraid dust would bother me too much. I have never owned a replica, so I would be grateful to hear your experiences. Thanks!
jpz5142 Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 This is such an odd question, regardless I'll try to provide an answer that has been given before. Reps are not made in the same clean room standards that you will likely find at Rolex/Tudor or any of the Swiss watch houses for that matter. That said it is possible for some something like a spec of dust to be under the crystal, however it is the easiest of all fixes and takes simple tools and a steady hand to remedy. If something like the possibility of dust under the crystal on a rep bothers you then I'd suggest getting a gen Tudor, there are limely bigger issues with the rep than a spec of dust that will bug you.
Kleif Posted July 30, 2015 Author Report Posted July 30, 2015 One speck of dust is probably fine, but if it is more than that it will likely bother me. I don't want to open the case myself (would probably make it worse) and I don't know if a watch maker would fix a replica. I bought a new gen Speedy pro two years ago, so I can't justify a gen Tudor. When I look at the videos from the dealers, it is hard to tell if the dust is under or over the crystal. So I wanted to ask you guys how common it is. Do the factories try to keep them clean, or don't they care?
pcardoza Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 Is it common? Not really. Does it happen? Sure it does. Is it worth the risk? IMO, YES.........
Nightwatch Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 Hi, on the better reps like the Blackbay it´s not common, get one, it´s very nice:)
kernow Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 Out of 50 or so reps that I've had, I can't think of one where there was any noticeable dust under the crystal.
Mendota Explorer Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 (edited) Same here. The only dust I have is on a watch that MD2020 serviced for me. There are particles that continue to pop up and it has been 2 years now. Edited August 1, 2015 by Mendota Explorer
dbane883 Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 Brand new genuine Rolexes have minute specks of dust if you look close enuff. The hands are all installed by a human after all and not by robots in a vacuum.
Mendota Explorer Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 But those swiss trolls and elves are working in near-clean room conditions, so the dust is definitely kept to a bare minimum. The children and mothers/wives assembling reps are working in garages and basements, warehouses, and offices. There's definitely no comparison between the cleanliness or lack thereof.
Kleif Posted August 5, 2015 Author Report Posted August 5, 2015 Thanks for all the answers, guys! Looks like this isn't going to be a problem. And thank you for the pics Nightwatch. Looks sweet!
jion Posted August 7, 2015 Report Posted August 7, 2015 Not common for the good reps. At least I haven't encountered this problem yet *touch wood
Mike on a bike Posted August 7, 2015 Report Posted August 7, 2015 Guys your looking for a speck of dust with a loop, really................... whatever.
