First mod 5512

Simple mod for my cartel 5512 yesterday.

It's not perfect but I'm happy for my first try.

Dial in oven for 30 minutes, vintage horoloex lume, then strong coffee dried under a lamp.

Strong coffee only for the hands.

Case shaked in a box with coins.

Forgot the insert in bleach because of a phone call. So it's more fade than I want and I think to buy an other insert for retry. Any advise where to buy one ?

And I had a dislodged Keyless work when I remove the stem. Fortunately fixed this morning with this video guide :

After :

Not bad for a first try ?

Thanks all !

Not the insert I try to reach. I wanted a less faded one. But I make the mistake to answer a phone call...

And I need to age and relume the hands a little more.

Looking good and much improved imho. The 3d vintage lume effect is great and totally improves the character/look.

Inserts: "expensive"/quality from WSO on the bay, about 38 euros, with a very nice cover on the pearl http://www.ebay.com/itm/310977055461?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

At GBP 10 or 12 better priced alternative from Cousins Uk 5512/5513 insert, I do like it´s looks

Looking great so far. Nice work on this. You really improved it from stock.

If you ever decide to make another one or work on a different dial, a member gave me some awesome tips to produce that dry and textured look to the lume that vintage tritium gets. I can't wait to try it myself. He said to mix in some white spirits or mineral spirits, depending on what it is called in your country. As the mineral spirits evaporate, they produce a dry and almost powdery look, not the smooth and shiny look. You have to experiment with it to get your mixture right so it isn't too dry.

Not satisfied by my first try, I reworked the dial.

Lume and coffee removed.

Matt lacquer spray, then better applied lume.

I know glossy lume is not accurate for 5512, but my Horoloex lume mix is basic.

The lume application looks great, you could always give the dial another light dusting of matt varnish to take the gloss off the lume.

Thanks ! The lume is less glossy now. I need a better lume kit. I will stay as is for the moment.

Reworked the hands too, with steam vinegar and salt.

Thank you !

I'm happy with this result. It's not perfect, but it has character.

I need one tip for replace the hands. I have no problem with hours and seconds, but minutes hands are bends every time. It does not matter for this 5512 aged hands, but I'm working on an Helenarou 6538 with nice gold hands.

Hi !

After working on my silix 6538 http://rwg.cc/index.php?/topic/181731-Another-Silix-6538-project, I wanted to improve this josh 5512. To resume, I modded the dial few weeks ago with a noob horoloex lume kit and matt varnish spray. The insert was bleached to ghost.

Today I relumed the dial with nemoto Green GLL-300F. The recipe is lume powder, matt varnish and a few Terre de Sienne pigment. Partially lose some dial dots paint, due to old baking mod try.

Hands relumed to match.

Lug holes drilled to 1.3mm.

Crown guards shaved.

Case sanded with 240, 400, 600, 1000 paper successively. Then polished.

Bezel slightly sanded and polished.

Next thing to do will be to change crown with an Athaya 700 or 702, and plexi.

Thanks for looking guys.
