is anyone else kind of... bored?

longshot

Recommended Posts

i've been in to reps about three years now, and gens about 5 years before that. i still have one or two of each of the vintage seiko's i love and a couple swiss gens and my rep collection now stands at:

  • Pam 036 old factory swiss
  • Pam 5218-201a swiss from davidsen vintaged by flavr flav
  • Rolex TW best ETA Sub with lots of mods
  • Rolex LV noobmariner
  • Omega black SMP ETA old factory with gen crown/tube/hands/ insert
  • FM Conquistador white swiss eta 2892
  • Tag Link chrono gray serviced asian 7750
  • Rolex GMT II ETA w/correct hand stack and gen insert
  • Omega planet ocean swiss eta 4th gen 42.5mm orange

about the only one i regret selling was the breitling seawolf avenger. dumb move that :p

but none of the new super reps really make me want to buy?

the steelfish is too blingy compared to my seawolf, and all the chronos pretty much leave me cold. and i worry about reliability issues too.

i wish the rep makers would stop making everything they can stuff an asian 7750 in and give us some plain watches. since i am primarily a diver guy i would LOVE to see either of these. asian auto or eta clone or eta, i don't really care. and i don't even care if the second crown moves the internal bezel ;) both of these should be 'do able' with cases already being made and could be a lot cheaper than an unreliable chrono!

I sort of agree with ya. I'm not sure if I'm bored--or just complacent? A lot of great reps have been coming out. HBB, Cousteau Divers, BCE, Steelfish... yet no one's done some of the simpler watches like the Rolex nondate Submariner 14060, probably my all-time favorite watch.

You've got a lot of the really good "pre" super-reps. Especially most of the good ETA based, non-chrono watches.

I would love to see the AP repped. I think I remember hearing rumblings about it.

That being said, I've ended up shifting my 'style' to whatever is the best done rep. Therefore, I've picked up watches that I otherwise may not have been into, if all reps were of the same quality. For example, the Breitlings I probably would not have bought.

I would love to see what your thoughts were IF you were to pick up a super-rep...given the fact that you've had most of the good ETA based older reps. I have a feeling you'd be surprised at how far things have come, even though your point of reference is by no means 'low'...as far as your expectation level.

I hear what you're saying, but I find it an interesting phenomenon that people are apt to become bored when you have less taste for a "cult" watch -- e.g., the Panerai or the Rolex.

When you are more specialised, it seems to me that short of buying every known version/model, you can NEVER become bored, and there is always a watch you don't own, which you long to have.

If I were more catholic in my rep watch tastes, I think I would've quit collecting rep watches about a month into my hobby. But having a specific interest, in a specific marque is what drives my fascination in it, and I fear I am in it for the long haul.

I drool just thinking of when this real PAM will come out, the Egiziano, rumoured to be reissued soon by Panerai, I read recently.

It will sell like hotcakes.

So you see, there's always something down the pike to look forward to, when you're a niche collector.

Gaaaaaaaaa!!! You've seen one Pam, you've seen them all. I mean really....... how many iterations of THE SAME BLOODY WATCH can one guy (er, "person" in the presence of the delectable Ms. Barrett) can one have?

In fairness, that's what everyone around me says. When I showed my mother the PAM 112 photo, she looked at me blankly, and said, "It looks exactly the same as the other ones".

The weird thing about it is that I kinda agree...BUT SO WHAT! :)

(I also think the same thing about Rolexes)

Bored? I can't be "bored" or I'd be 8 feet long and stiff.

I don't have enough time left to live, for all my plans, much less time to be bored! Perish the thought, full speed ahead!

Go! Go! Go!!!!!!!!

You had me at 8 feet long and stiff!

Eeeeeuuuw....my eyes! my eyes! *clawing and scratching*

Aah, the Egyptian Navy model (yes THAT elite fighting force), the one most Paneristi wet themselves over  God knows why, quite possibly the ugliest Panerai ever thought up (and there's some pretty stiff competition there, along with the beauties ^_^ ). There is a very good reason Ralph Lauren keeps his locked up at home :D

Like some weird genetic throwback/missing link, it's appearance conjures up the result of one nights' drunken 'mistake' between a poor na

Or in layman's terms, take Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and an IVF research lab..... :whistling:

Wronggggggg! The Egiziano is like Kerlon.

You may think it's a bit overrated, and want to kick its shins so it writhes in agony for making you look bad, but you can't help but to stare with your mouth open, full of pipoca.

Whatever.

That's just because you don't know what Pipoca is! Especially that sweet, brown pipoca they sell outside of the Roxy cinema in Copacabana, whose aroma you can breathe all the way from Posto 3.

But you have to admit that he really knows how to turn a phrase.... :D

Yes, yes he does. Thought he overshot his wad a tad with the Rohypnol allusion, but the girl who describes straps as if they were Caravaggios shouldn't talk.

@Plaifender: Don't sweat about my straps, tio! I got 300 straps just like it at home. :)

@Tourby: I know the history of the Egiziano, my love. You let me worry about what looks good on me. I have proven everyone wrong so far with the Fiddy, so pfui to that! ;)

Now that's something.. the pipoca in Rio is nothing compared to the palomitas in cine Yelmo in spain... What smells better Vbarrett? Pipocas or your famous micky d's healthy hashbrowns? (recently featured in a pictorial of yours). i was just thinking while looking at that pic.. DON'T STAIN that strap with Mckey D grease!

this Egiziano is not a watch to wear... it is a watch for show display window.

it has appr. 60mm and very thick... one of my customers has it on his collection (only 50pieces was made for egyptian navy) and it is TOOOOOO BIG... you can

Hey, hey, slow down - having trouble keeping up here! As soon as I work what an Egiziano is, I get a Tevez, a Kerlon and a pipoca. Then I find out what they are, come back, and suddenly I have to work out what a palomitas in cine Yelmo is! :animal_rooster:

In other words, it's a clock!

I don't mind it (really) - I think there's a place for a portable steel porthole on my arm - it's a conversation starter for sure.

Okay, okay, the conversation might start "that's one a them HMPS electronic tags, innit?" but beggars can't be choosers....

Oh, and for the record, the Egyptian Navy are amongst the world's best. Have you ever heard of their divers being caught sticking a limpet mine on a enemy ship? Exactly, they're that good. Either that, or all their divers sank under the weight of their oversized watches.... :g:

Ry - compliment appreciated and reciprocated, miss your sharp and pithy posts, all too rare these days...unless you count sleep-deprived musings on the Shout-Out feature ;)

VB - please leave my 'wad' out of this  although you may be right, it was perhaps a little overkill  just the GPF 2/56 is a very unattractive design (only 50 made I recall, no other takers) which was binned afterwards and only briefly toyed with again during the dark days of the '80s when someone thought to dream up this aluminium monstrosity

304011-288.jpg

Hence, as you no doubt know, my Tevez-Rooney comment which referred to other more 'obvious' attributes than their (vastly overrated) abilities with a leather-covered pig's bladder.

NO! I loved what you wrote. Even the Rohypnol thingie (ooh, bad rush week memories, but moving on).

And your wad looks fine from here. But let's be honest, the Egiziano is what the French call ugly women that are so ugly they are beautiful: une belle-laide.

Best worn around ankle for full effect ;)

I believe Italian literature holds a more accurate description of your feelings....lode della donna brutta....in praise of the ugly woman.

p.s. please stick with the Lempicka avatar, always good to brighten the place up :D

If you used that phrase for the 127 or 187, it'd have merit. Both those models are ugly to the point of beauty. I love the 187 fugly tin can and wear it regularly, but there's no way I'd wear an Eggy.

The Eggy-ziano is just silly. It's like a fashion-designer's totally insane catwalk masterpiece before it gets watered down to something actually wearable for the high-street by someone with their feet on the ground and an eye on the bottom line.

It's too much Panerai.

actually i've had three super reps ; two ultimate planet oceans and a chopard mille miglia. the big p.o. is a between watch on me. it needs the bracelet but with a link out it's too tight and with it back in it's too loose. and the chopard was a bit too shiny/flashy

I'm not really bored... I just can't wait until Narikaa returns. I love to sift through his unique goodies and hopefully there will be something just right for me!! Though I agree the standard models on Joshua and Andrew site's have all been acquired and there's nothing else I really really want.

I would never wear an Egiziano, other than on a scuba diving and just to amaze my fellow divers.

And if it were a rep I suppose it would soon get flooded.

But I would surely love to have one in my collection. It has been the watch that fired my curiosity for (and then my addiction to) PAM watches.

On the other hand, why should the Italians sell it to the Egyptian Army only (and 50 pieces only) if it was a beautiful watch?

 Cheap words for August, let's see the jibes when it's pissing with rain and you're freezing your nuts off come January!! :p

For your reference then....

Liverpool fan and an expert on prison ankle bracelets....coincidence? :animal_rooster: C'mon, Bellamy has gone. It's time to let go....
