Just to throw in my two cents, for those who cannot handle an honest appraisal of their work. Perhaps you should do it right then! Half-ass work is just that and has no place where people spend their hard earned money for repairs and mods. Rob did some repair work for me recently, serviced my NEW UPO that was not working correctly. He found that it had an old movement installed, it was dirty, one of the jewels had fallen out of place and the mainspring was defective. Not only did he do a superb job cleaning and lubing the movement, but he replaced the mainspring free of charge. I beleive that says it all. It was two guys, one who was the side kick and one who basically led the show. The "Jersey Guys" for those of you that may know the show. Anyway. Craig, the leader, left the show and the radio station. The radio station kept the program "Jersey Guys" going at the same time with a new leading man. I don't listen to the radio station anymore. I think now it's left to us to make something positive come out of a huge setback to RWG, and that's to end what's essentially been a free-for-all modding free-for-all that's been in place on the forum. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that the admins are in a crappy position--it's not their job to vet every guy who wakes up some morning suddenly transformed into a watchsmith, and there's never been a rule in history that can protect people that refuse to do their due dilligence. What we and the admins and the membership can do if we work together is make sure it's difficult for hacks to set up shop in first place, and if one of them actually does manage to sert up shop, that he gets exposed as quickly as possible. I'm sure we could get hold off test parts (dials, movements, cases etc) to administer this. There's also enough talent here in terms of appraising such work. I recall one modder saying they'd destroyed about 60 or 70 ________s in getting it right As Rob says, it should not be left to others to clean up the mess left behind by these hackers. Suggestion 2. An open and transparent pricing policy - published in full - would also help prevent charges for "blowing dust off dial" and "realigning crystal" and suchlike. I am a relative newcomer to this board, but have seen and respected your work and integrity from all of the other boards. You are one of (if not THE) most respected craftsman and resident experts we have, and it is a loss for us all to lose you here, or anywhere. You would dispute it yourself, but for most of us it is from your words to our watches as if spoken to by a Higher Power, that is the respect you have created and deserve. It is a tribute that it is for professional and ethical reasons that you have come to the conclusion you have about staying - HERE. We (here) will miss you, and hope that you will remain there for us on these boards to some degree that we may still hungrily partake of your wisdom, professionalism and exacting standards. I have learned a tremendous amount about the inner workings of our pieces from your posts, our hobby (obsession) would not be the same without you. Ken Rob already indicated some of the modders/watchsmiths whose job himself, and all of us looking at the pics and reading the feedbacks on the forum, had the opportunity to appreciate. My proposal is to create a Watchsmith/Modder section, recognised by RWG, which includes these names (if they agree to be in, of course), with the jobs they are specialised in and possibly their location (why sending our watches in another continent if we have some closer alternatives...). The candidate new entries in the section should somehow (pics, witness from senior members and/or administrators) prove their skills and reliability. Let the buyer beware in the interim.
