If you think vintage Rolex prices are insane now.......

I am not sure what happened to Omega's cozy product placement deal with EON Productions, but it appears that Daniel Craig will be wristing a Rolex in 'Quantum of Solace'. And not just any Rolex, but THE Rolex (6538 Submariner) that Fleming & Connery made famous in some of the earliest (& arguably best) Bond films. And if you think vintage Rolex (watches & parts) prices are high now........just wait until the movie comes out & every kid on the block (as well as every Asian, Russian & Indian nouveau riche/collector) has to have 1 of his own

I thought the point of the article was that Craig wore a 6538 'replica' in the new movie, but, on 2nd read, I think he is just commenting that he owns/wears a Sub (off camera). Too bad, but I think this revelation will still provide some degree of boost to Rolex's popularity as word spreads that the actor gets paid to wear an Omega, but prefers to wear a vintage Rolex. I think that just about says it all. ;)

i hated ALL the EXPLICIT product placement in Casino Royale, and the playing of texas holdem to dumb it down for american audiences who wouldnt understand baccarat... the action more than made up for it...but still. quantum will be awesome never the less, hopefully minus barrel rolling Aston Martins and DIY resuscitating glove boxes... that was just dumb.

Hmmm, didn't boost Rolex's coffers or indeed harm Omega's claims for the Speedmaster when photo evidence and interviews revealed most of NASA's Apollo astronauts preferred to wear their Rolex GMTs.

'Kids' won't care anyway - the Vesper line in CR said it all - they'll want the shiney two grand SMP with 007 logo on it, rather than an old battered anonymous-looking twenty grand Sub. Rolex just isn't 'cool'.

I think that if there were as many watch collectors during the Apollo missions as there are today, this info would have affected both companies' bottom lines. But, today, I do not think an astronaut's preference in watches carries nearly as much weight (with the public) as a movie star's, especially when you are talking about a popular star like Craig & especially when that star is playing the iconic 007.

I thought the same thing about hold 'em (without the dumbing down for american audiences because I don't think ANYONE really understands baccarat). It turns out that poker was the original game in the plot but I thought that using it at the height of hold 'em popularity was nothing more than pandering to the masses. I'm not even going to mention the fact that good hold 'em players never gamble unless they've got too many chips.

Hmmm, maybe so about watch collecting but still not convinced. I'm far too young to know from personal experience, but I have the impression that back in the '60s, astronauts were treated as movie stars/royalty/gods. The best of the best, the Right Stuff and all that....

As it happens, I am old enough to remember & the Apollo astronauts were treated with alot more respect than today's astronauts get. The attention they received was on par with today's average (not Star) football player -- someone that people know from the evening news & that kids look up to. But, even in their heyday, Apollo astronauts were not celebrities that paparazzi would follow around because of the public's insatiable desire for tidbits of their dressing habits.

Getting back to Craig, I have to wonder whether the Omega people were made aware of Craig's comments about his 6538? If so, my guess is that they will tell him to keep his mouth shut (about Rolex) while he is being paid (even if only indirectly) to promote their watch in the movie.

Yeah, because all the other Bond movies were so REALISTIC.

I think that rlx prices are in line to all high quality swiss watches.

This is the link of a seller of used and vintage watches in my town

http://luigirossogioielli.com/site/collezioniok.php

see it, the price of the perfect GEN 5513 vintage is similar to others watches.

You have reason about a restrict number of particular models, that have high high prices, as 6263 and the daytona V722 family, as Comex, as DRSD.

But in Italy a standard vintage sub vetroplexy has a price similar to an used modern submariner

A entry level Patek Vacheron or AP has a price very hig respect to this sub vintage

I think that a Patek Worldtime has a superior quality , but a simple Calatrava is not a super iper lunar watch, but if a sub vintage costs 1, a Calatrava costs 3 !!!!!

Really, all the swiss watches hig level, not only rlx, are very overpriced !

But if you love it, you buy it. It is not another solution.

Quick edit: First off I would like to say that no James Bond would ever wear an old vintage Rolex with no crown guards out into the war zone....not gonna happen....

Also....he would never wear it that loose either....in fear of it getting snagged on something and tearing his arm off....lol

When are they gonna realize its time for a Breitling Emergency?

YEAH BUT it still shattered the suspension of disbelief for me, i've seen every bond movie thus far and some of the elements of all the previous films seem plausible or is skillfully done cinematically that it didnt bother me. only thing that was EVER "yeah right" for me during bond flicks were the precise timing and luck that agent 007 had.

I hate to say it, but in the "field", realistically, he'd wear a Casio Gshock or something simular (Just like all your other operators in the world). While you're mac'in on that banging double op at the casino, sipping on martinis and taking the houses money, your Rolex or Omega is the way to go, but for other times, not so practical. Plus I can't imagine it's very cost effective for the Q sector to keep making modifications to Rolexes (tax dollars hard at work I guess). With that being said, I wonder if Rolex has a C4 clause in the warrenty?

i bet Bond would actually wear a Breitling Emergency watch. i know many SAS agents wear this model.

Actually I had heard from a watch seller near Hereford that they are wearing the Traser Black Storm Pro, I picked one up but sold it on after a few weeks on the wrist, you could read by the lume which was amazing but on the whole the watch seamed cheap and small, and the bezel is a composite. Of course the quartz movement is a Ronda or similar deadly accurate but no sweep......hope the new owner likes it but I am back to my CWC automatic RN diver.

Of course this is why I now have Rolex envy........

Awesome pics :) I'm just wondering, is that definitely still the .45, or could it actually be the .42mm?

While I can appreciate that modern forces might well favor the digital and the quartz, it's worth bearing in mind, that back in the day, Rolex were the issued watches for the forces, just as Panerai were the issued watch for the Marina Militare...

  • 3 weeks later...

You're all wrong. If it was a real gov't spy he'd be wearing at least a 48mm. There's no way in hell your gonna fit a heat seeking missile / laser / gps nav combo system into anything smaller than a 48.

And if it was an american spy, with the way our gov't is bleeding money into keeping the economy going, he'd be wearing a casio.
