  4. The centre second hand is more than likely slipping, so need resetting and pressing on the pinion securely. This is a straight forward job for anyone competent working on watches. The second issue of the 60 minute counter running continuously indicates a problem that would need further investigation. This watch has a modification to move the running seconds from 9 o'clock to 6 o'clock. That means a few extra gears and I am unaware what the layout of it is. I can imagine how disappointing this is but my advice would be to get the centre seconds hand set properly and forget about the 60 minute counter. It may be more trouble than what it's worth.

  5. "Anyone knows when the 703 was introduced (if ever) on 5513?" If you look at pictures of 1982 to 1987 5513 they all have 3 dot type crowns on printed and applied marker models. Some might be 702 (both are 'triplock') but the main difference is the smooth area at the lower edge of the crown for the extra O ring on the outside of the case tube. 'Triplock' = two O rings inside the case tube and one under the crown cap. When there is one at the base of the crown, it is not counted. Factoids: No mater how many O rings the rolex crown/tube combo has, the same amount of pressure is applied to the one little bitty gasket between the case tube and case. That's why a high quality single O ring non screw down crown can go 50 meters or more and a double O ring crown can go 200 to 300 meters with no problem. One O ring crowns are good most of the time. Two O ring crowns can dive so deep your head will cave in. Three O ring clowns crowns can make it to the bottom of a 1000 meter deep vat of Night Train wine. 6. "Yep, that is correct, 5512 PCG's are slightly thinner. No idea on the exact height." "I don't know the exact thickness. But I've had this discussion with Rolojack and he informed me that early 60s especially 5512 PCGs have thinner midcases." Some additional 5512/13 information (may have to copy/paste the links): http://hypebeast.com/2012/2/retrospect-1961-rolex-crown-guard-submariner-5512-chronometer-version https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/vintagerolexforum/couple-of-sub-questions-t37447.html https://rwg.cc/topic/186246-phong-5513-pointed-crownguard-case-rehaut-opening-question/ https://rwg.cc/topic/189490-rolex-5513-with-pointed-crown-guards-pics-of-during-and-after/

  8. RWG is such a fine place for gentlemen to hang out, it seems like good things always happen here. Watching James Bond movies, you see him with his 6538 and when the bad guys jump in the ocean he leaps in after them without a thought to the watch he's wearing. Contemporary VRF denizens would shriek in horror at the thought of a precious 6538 getting wet, much less flying into the ocean. This is remarkable to me, because the big crowns were produced as an upgrade to the small crowns, with increased water resistance. Read the dial... it says "SUBMARINER" not "DESKMARINER". These were made to be worn in the water, down to horrific depths like 330 feet and beyond and were expected to keep time and not leak. They were tools to make a diver's work safer. Now, because of their scarcity, we treat them as My Precious and polish and coddle them. I can't think of the last time I polished and coddled my tools in the garage. Their purpose is to keep my Land Rovers running. When my micrometer torque wrench screws up, guess what? I'll buy another. It makes me a safer mechanic. When I was a commercial diver my tools made me a safer diver. Strip away the mystique and that's all these watches are. There's a certain thrill to taking a Big Crown out into the ocean, and USING IT like it was intended. It's in its natural environment and we can taste the reality of what the nostalgia promises. Down at moderate depths, there's nothing quite like looking at a Big Crown on your wrist doing its job. Throwing caution to the wind, scoffing at the fears of weaker men, and just enjoying the beastie in its natural environment. Like it's supposed to be there. And if it floods? If you're running an ETA, no harm done. Fix it and go diving again. If you're running a 1030 or 15xx? Welcome to misery. IMHO life is too short for misery.

  9. Thank you so much for your insights! That really fits in with what I have been thinking over the last year and it seals the deal for me. This has been such a great thread. I can't believe the timing of it, too. I took a year off from the watch world and now that I am back, Automatico brings up the exact issue that has been nagging me! I love this place!

  10. If I was to do that I'd get a good Phong case and have Dbane work it over. Then a Dark Lord dial and ETA movement, maybe a 2783. Gen hands and gen everything else. That would be a good looking workhorse I could wear every day for the rest of my life.

  12. Cool story bro.. hahah I could not resist that. I actually did like the story thou. My Mother drove me nuts in the 70's as I was growing up, I am 47 now. She used to play Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears all the time. I did not understand why they had a horn section in a "Rock Band.' Fast Forward to last Summer. Chicago was touring so I had to bring my 15yr old Daughter with me to see the act. She is an old soul and loves the music. Needless to say, I shed a tear for my long gone Mom, hugged my Daughter and Wife, and enjoyed every note. Great show and incredible band. Thanks for the memories MOAB. Got me a bit moist around my Eye holes for some reason.

  13. Great clip, MOAB. I had a bunch of friends in the early 80s, they had a group (I'll mercifully withhold their name) and they were getting hot, and they were touring with Van Halen and opening for them. They were playing a side gig one night out on the road and doing pretty good, and this group of guys sitting at a table seemed to really be enjoying the show. So at intermission they bought beers for the band and the band played on. This went on for a couple more sets, so the guys in the group thought they'd go out and mingle with the audience, and sat with the guys buying beers. They talked music for awhile and went to play another set. Next break, they came back out to sit with the guys in the audience some more, and were really laying it on thick... "yeah we're touring opening for VH, things are looking good, we'll probably score a recording contract out of this... blah blah blah." The guys buying beers seemed to understand the whole scene with managers and contracts and recording, so my buddies asked them "you guys seem to know a lot about our industry. Do you do music too?" and of course the guys in the audience said "yeah... we've had some experience" So my friends stepped right in it. "What's your group?" "Chicago" They were bragging all night to Peter Cetera, Terry Kath and the Chicago band.

  14. I still can't believe we are even having to have this discussion. In the last 2 years my hobby has been making jewelry by designing them in either Zbrush or Matrix Gemvision (Rhino based) and then having my models professionally printed with the latest 3d printing software which is called material jetting. Material Jetting is so precise that you could 3d print finger prints if you wanted to. For the love of God and all that is mighty, let's create a team of people from this forum including myself and make 3D models of the 5513 case. Now, I can't cast models into stainless steel, but maybe I can help with the workflow of the whole process of making a 3d model of the midcase which can then be CNC machined, etc. At the vary least, we could have the midcase designed with just final thread cutting left which people like JMB could advice on. Let's freaking do this people. Let me give you an example of what can be done with technology. A friend of mine wanted a treasure coin but didn't want to pay hundreds of dollars for even just a replica. So I created an exact replica using Zbrush and then casting it in Silver. For the Love of God. With 3D scanning, we could high resolution scan an original 5513 mid case.
