  4. Similar situation here. Got the Gen’s I wanted. Was gone for about 5 years. In 2019 I became frustrated and put off my what was/is happening in the Gen and Grey markets. Not to mention I have owned Gen’s from all the major brands and actually had many issues requiring warranty work that usually came back botched (Tudor). When paying >$5k for a “Swiss” watch that has QC issues it sent me running back here. I think the price hikes are relative and generally worth it. A Seiko Turtle will run you the same as a NOOB, VS/VR, GM, BP; Rolex, PAM, Omega rep that is damn close. Get an ETA base run it till dies and swap in a Gen ETA/Sellita. If you haven’t handled the VSF 216610 Sub, it is worth every penny. The VS3235 movement is a true custom clone 3235 movement with an astonishing 72± hours power reserve. Takes Gen Rolex calendar parts. If you can service ETA, you can service this. I go back and forth. I am fortunate and grateful I can walk in to a Rolex dealer and get what I want. At the same time the lure of Reps is equally, and at times more fun and satisfying.

  8. Interesting point of view. I for one don't think there's such a big picture... I think we vintage watch lovers are not so many. Most people want plain bling and a 100K€ vintage Daytona just isn't visible enough on the wrist to thrill the uneducated crowds. There are two kind of reps : modern and vintage. Modern is mass made and yes brands are fighting against it. It's perfectly understandable. Vintage on the other hand is a totally different picture. Never was it mass produced (for quality items. The only mass produced are jokes really...) and that very fact shows the clientele pan is limited. So they are handmade. And pretty much always by afficionados. Even the vietnam made ones are made by people who were collectors at first before it became a business. And I might add : not a lucrative one. If I count my labor for example I must make someting like 5 to 8 euros an hour... Hahahaha !!! Yeah... What a joke when in my real line of work I won't lift my pencil for less than a hundred an hour. So it isn't for the money at all: there isn't to be made. Just the thrill of creating dream pieces and cracking the small details that makes a piece a great piece. That patina, that unique lume color, that unique dial shade of brown... All those makes every build a thrilling experience. Personally: creating those timekeepers is a real therapy away from the real life. I meet you there . Your head must be free of anything else to achieve a good job. Mostly now that my sight is slowly decreasing.... I now need to pay more attention and I can't work a weekend straight on a watch. Let's all fight for our hobby to live despite that hostile world my friends !!!!!

  9. 15 years ago, when many of us were called crazy for paying the (then) outrageous prices being asked for vintage Rolex parts, I used to tell people that, based on recent history, a year from now the price is likely to be (at least) 20% higher, making today's outrageous price will look like a bargain. But even I never expected the current Vintage Rolex-Mania we are now experiencing. And the mania shows no signs of dissipating any time soon. Things have gotten so crazy that, to paraphrase automatico, most of my collection (some composed of NOS Rolex parts) would be financially and literally unobtainium for me today. But the same rule applies: no matter how crazy Rolex prices are today, if you can afford it, buy it. Because it may be out of reach -- if available at all -- this time next year.
