Warning-6497 movement W/O seconds-disaster on your wrist
w0lf replied to RWG Technical's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the post R! As always very informative I personally only build closed caseback models and chose ETA original movements and parts for my purposes. I have the luxury of using factory ETA 4th wheel parts without seconds output. It's possible the same will work for low beat HZ clone that's in all H-factory creations. The best part is - it's only GBP3.45 so there's no excuse not to pick up a few. Cousins part # UT64971220.- 55 replies

An interesting new A6497-2 with some improvements and oddities
w0lf replied to RWG Technical's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the detailed analysis, and great pics! These are in fact the so called H-factory movements and they are very likely to become regulars on your workbench as the quality control is relatively lacking and the watches are plentiful. -
you can try getting an anti-reflex stripper solution used by optometry techicians. you will have to make sure the solution is free of hydrofluoric acid.

If you use sandpaper on tapered historic CG it will destroy the geometry. You can only fully refinish a 1950 CG that's flat on both top and bottom using this method. With a historic you can use sandpaper/emery bar only if you're finishing the bottom flat part. Also, the easiest method is not to not freehand it but rather use a ruler or a machinist angle as a guide to slide the CG along sandpaper. The only way to do the top curve properly would be to use a jig that will protect the taper. Otherwise using a scotch brite pad is your only recourse. Be very mindful of how aggressively you apply the brushing because you can also lose edge detail if you overdo it. the grit in the picture looks to be ~400.

Have members wants from this hobby changed.. ? Or is it me?
w0lf replied to PeteM's topic in The Panerai Area
What drives new member joins, stimulates intelligent dialogue and promotes continuation of the chain of knowledge on any board is quality of content. This is why the Rolex sub is popular, folks are discussing watches that they're excited about, that they've built or have ideas about building or just about anything else. There's a great feeling of camaraderie. The OP sub was the same way, slightly less popular, but it's all changed. Go back several months and do a simple statistic, going forward in time - threads where people were discussing feasibility of builds, showing off their work and discussing ideas have got next to no responses being drowned out by the "I got my watch and changed a strap on it". I will no longer pretend that this continually holds my interest, when I see a thread like this the first 50 times I comment with pat on the back. But when this is all I see despite numerous attempts from senior members to up the content quality (and falling on deaf ears), I assume the soil is not fertile and move on. When I joined I read the boards for 5-6 months before asking my questions. I also thought I needed to earn my right to ask questions by contributing to the board on topics that weren't discussed or not discussed to an extent that we couldn't benefit from bringing the topic back up. I made great friends whom I talk to on weekly basis offline. No I don't take myself seriously and I don't pretend to know how to fix this, but I would like to do more to improve the content if I can. I'm going to need help. So who's with me? -

Didn't quite happen the way we would have liked did it? But the new generation is indeed here and it wants cookie cutter solutions for their cookie cutter watches. -

It's great to see newer members with genuine interest in the brand, history and exchange of knowledge, however I must agree with Pete, that what's happening with the OP forum largely has to do with the fact that for every one new member in pursuit of knowledge, interested in making the journey themselves, there are tens that are in pursuit of the destination via the shortest route. It has always been the case though, that's just the natural way, what's changed is the fact that everything rep Panerai is in abundance and admirable quality per $ spent. What this does to the community is that very few of the "consumer" types are ever converted into the "research and build" type. At the same time the latter type has no incentive to share their knowledge or achievements because it would be an exercise of casting pearls before swine. Between late 2007 and August of 2010 there were roughly a dozen of new and largely inaccurate Panerai releases. From September of 2010 until now there were at least 36 that even if you want to mod you run into diminishing returns before you pick up the caseback opener. List of new models: H-factory 005K, 005M, 000N, 26K, 111M, 112M, 176M, 177L, 177M, 219L, 318K, 288K, 212I, 213I, 214H, 253I, 286J, 292K, 104I, 360M (+ we have two v2's of the 177 and 005 already) N-factory 111J, 162F, 188H, 196H, 224F, 236K, 250K, 187G, 111M, 005M ? factory 312L, 320L, 328L, 329L, 359M, 351M I found my year old post from Nov 2010 predicting the further development of PAM rep scene. I made the post right when the chrono models have hit hard and everyone's had a chance to enjoy one for at least a couple of weeks. This is what I thought then: I think all of that that I predicted already happened. What I neglected to say which was still an unformed idea but was beginning to take hold, is that with this change, tier 3 will overcome all other tiers, the post content, member projects and all the exciting stuff that would keep me personally interested would also start leaning out drastically as a result. It is pretty evident that this is what's happened and is continuing to happen. -
He does but only in for 0.9mm stem and the dish is shallow. If you want a spring-loaded crown get one from DSN, he copied it from the OEM triple gasket crown and it's very good. You will however need to install the matching tube (supplied with it) by re-tapping and pressing in / epoxy gluing the DSN tube. The shank of the crown is thicker so it won't fit your case without a tube change.

the last non-sprung SS version was 20 euro + shipping

We're both wearing Ubi-Rolexes today Man, this 1665 is so comfortable and the movement.... ohh this movement, the tactile feel of setting the time on 1570 is worth the price of admission.

I think it's preE/P/C You should be able to remove the foil stickers from the movement but I wouldn't bother. I should probably note that overall this model isn't quite accurate by today's standards but it has 2 things that are quite good. They are the dial, which while comes with the low-bar A's in LMP text is still very nice and has good LSL spacing from 6 o'clock and decent markers but needs to be relumed in order to be properly enjoyed. Case on this model is the second good bit, great I should say, while not quite suitable for a contemporary PAM its midcase is the closest to PreA OP6500 caseset the rep factories produced. The bezel is not the best but it's possible it can be swapped for a more appropriate profile one from newer models. If this were up to me, I'd build an FGD dialed PAM PreA02 using the caseset, movement and sapphire from this watch (A/R stripped). You'll also need to source a crown and CG- T48 or DSN's NB crown & tube and Sead1999's crownguard, Jakob or DSN caseback (budget option) round out the package nicely. If the PreA02 dials are nowhere to be found you may be able to find a LOGO dial instead which can with a proper caseback will turn the same watch into a PreV 5218-209.

It's a 111F, one of the 1st great pam reps, and it comes with a Swiss eta6497-1.
