One thing is certain, if you call out a Rolex wearer and he looks like he can't afford it, you're right 99% of the time. I like those odds. It doesn't matter if we know scruffy millionaires when almost all the scruffs we know are not millionaires. The OP's point that if we want to avoid being called out, dress like you can afford a Rolex. He's right, for what it's worth, but most of us are still going to ignore it.

Disliking a particular government? Not a hope. There isn't a government on the planet I trust to hold that much data benignly. Maybe you should reread what I posted before.

Considering the photo is a biometric? I'm not against ID cards per se. I'm against the UK government, with their current record, holding all that data with no opt-out. Basically, I work in IT. I know what the limits are and I don't think we're technologically capable of storing that quality of data securely within the budgets set out by the government. It's a step too far. Far too much reliance will be put upon this card and you cannot trust a single thing this much. ID cards should be opt-in, like passports. In fact, just use passports. We know how well they work, we know what they look like and we know the limits.

It's not about Big Brother watching you, it's about Civil Servants with personal agendas having access to Big Brother's video tapes. One mad lefty/fascist civil servant (or agent of the government, gas board, library system, etc.) with a personal agenda can access any information they desire and profile the population any way they want. You don't have to have a guilty conscience to know this doesn't really appear to have any positive benefit for the cost.

Just to clarify, this previous sentence is only partially correct. It is the current UK (not English) Government that is pushing for ID cards. The latest is that they've been pushed back to 2112, the year of the London Olympics.

The point about Socialised Medicine is you don't need 300,000,000 people registered. We don't have it in the UK and if you turn up at hospital, you don't need ID because everyone gets free service. You're assumed to be eligible, by default, if you turn up.

Hugely against, mainly because the biometric data will be stored by the IT company with the lowest tender, and with the amount of recent data loss screw-ups in the UK, there is no way they can be trusted. Two points, if my data gets compromised, do I need to grow new eyeballs? And if my ID is stolen, how on earth can I prove who I am? Can you imagine how difficult it will be to prove you are a victim of identity theft (aka common fraud) when the ID cards are supposed to be foolproof? If you think about it, Live Free Or Die Hard (Die Hard 4.0) is based on the premise that the US government decided to store everything in one place. We don't have a John McClane in the UK, so I'd rather we didn't do that. Yippee ki yay.
