  1. I meant to update this post but wrote Lessons from an ETA upgrade instead. Anyway, I got three movements out of this. One is Mrs Pugwash's Raymond Weil watch, one is in my PO 42 and the last working one is in a RW case waiting for a project. Having a fourth for parts and not being scared of losing a movement really helped me learn more about fixing movements. Even if all but one of these movements die in the near future, this will have been worth it.
  2. Maybe because they're already making enough for anyone that wants one to buy one. It makes sense to sell into other luxury areas if you can.
  3. You won't get a genuine automatic chronograph with sapphire crystal for $300. Try it and get back to me. Even the Seiko Monster, one of the best valued gen watches out there doesn't have a sapphire crystal or AR coating.
  4. This car has a definite hint of the Saab about it. If this car weren't a Porsche, it'd be mostly very well-liked. Because it's a Porsche, it has to fit in with a certain ethos for some reason. I say forget the badge and appreciate the car.
  5. I have no idea. I found it in the middle of a field in the highlands of Scotland. There was a broken-down Reliant Scimitar nearby, so it was most likely a Ford 2.5l, which looks about right.
  6. Where can I get higher resolution photos of this? I want to make a rep of it.
  7. Here you go, taken for this thread: Click to embiggen I don't know if it's as obvious as it should be, but Rep on left, Gen on right. What's unusual is that the rep datewheel is accurate for the IWC GST. The print on reps must be the same as older gen 7750 wheels.
  8. I'm sure it's worth it if you need it, but for that money, I can pay someone to carry me closer to the subject.
  9. It's a minor outbreak of a fairly harmless virus ... right up to the point it returns this Winter and starts doing real damage on a large scale. If we're not better prepared by Winter, we're in for some ride. Remember, I'm usually the voice of calm reason that debunks any hype and misinformation. Superb post, Lani.
  10. That would have to be a stupid amount of bang for $1,600. I couldn't conceive of spending that on a lens.
  11. A friend lent me an f1.4 for a week so I got very familiar with it. It feels less cheap and does as you say give significantly better bokeh, but it was three times the price. Like the L series lenses, I am far too poor and amateur to justify spending that sort of money. One day, though. One day ...
  12. Of all the ways of supporting the community, this is my favourite.
  13. Oh, now I've got a bunch of captive Canon 400D users in front of me, if you want a tip, here's mine: Buy the f1.8 50mm lens. It's the best value lens you will ever come across. It's less than $100 and will take better pictures of your kids, pets, large objects, etc. It's also a light bucket. It can be a little tricky getting it to focus on stuff at fully open, but that's because the DoF is paper-thin; learn to use it and you'll be exceedingly happy with the results. Yes, the f1.4 is a better lens, but it's three-times the cost. For the money, you cannot get a better portrait lens.
  14. Looking at the problems I was having with my 200mm and looking at Freddy's issues, I must say I overstated my problems - what I was perceiving as problems were just minor niggles compared to what you 300mm users have come across. I'm glad I didn't get the 300mm lens.
  15. Same here: please excuse the iPhone wristie again ...
  16. Don't bother even putting the canon lens on. Just hold the decent glass on backwards.
  17. Oh! Yes, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS? That's the one I have. It's excellent. I'd not use it as a watch lens, but it's amazing for zoomy stuff, especially for the price.
  18. Ok, my results were differently disappointing. I'll post them later. The point of a DSLR is you can take that lens out and put a better one in. I'm very happy with my 18-55mm stock IS lens. It's not pro-quality or price, but it does watches very well.
  19. I'm almost certain it's the lens. I tried to do the same as you with my 200mm and got similar disappointing results.
  20. Co-Axial is a suberb technological advance. My brother's Planet Ocean took a few weeks to settle down but after that, it's been quartz-accurate; less than a second a month off. Nothing to be scared of.
  21. Yes, that's what they say. However, if the 8500 has two barrels, you've got to think they may be telling porkies a little.
  22. For decent colour balance, I shoot in RAW and choose the temperature in Photoshop's RAW importer. If you shoot RAW, it doesn't decide what colour balance to use until you convert it to a regular photo. Cheap f1.8 lens Stock 18-55mm
