Better still don't call in the 1st instance Then you don't need to be "Freid" There are a ton of other suppliers....Jules Borel( who were smart enough to disassociate themselves from Frei Borel.) or Cousins in the UK, just for starters. Make sure you know exactly what you need, then do the research on who has that movement, at the best price point. Offshore

Ask the question of what is fitted. Most times, particularly in chronos, you will find a Japanese quartz, specifically the Miyota OS series. These are pretty hardy movements, (remember to not try and adjust the time, once the movement has started its date change- depending on the model, this can be between 9pm and 3 am) If you have a major failure, the replacements are easy to come by, and not overly expensive. Offshore PS Some of these are in fact fitted with ETA movements..... whether they originated in Switzerland is another discussion entirely

I know this has been previously posted, but worth repeating. The links page from Watch u seek, is voluminous. http://www.watchuseek.com/site/linkspage.htm Hope anyone entering, has an hour or 3 to spare! So much information, so little time! Offshore

I have used Hypo cement, and once when I was out of it, I used a thin smear of silicon, and made sure i cleaned up afterwards O/S

@Pugs, Exactly...there are always ways around these things. And when a buck is involved, scammers will stop at nothing. (Shit I hate direct debits!)(Actually I hate banks, but a necessary evil....unless you have no $$ ) Offshore

@JK, I am not really savvy enough to answer that. However it is obviously a problem, and I do know that PP is vulnerable. Maybe these initial contacts are then followed up with stories of requiring a transfer of money from me for some obscure reason... I just don't know, or want to know. What I do know is...no one in the UK could possibly want to pay me almost twice the asking price for a car worth only a few $k, to then have it exported to Saudi! The shipping costs, would be more than the value of the car! Offshore

Gio, It needs to be reported in the tracker on the top tool bar. I have done so, as the initial report was marked solved. Offshore All issues should be reported there

Prices are $30 for 1 month, or $250 for a year. Gee makes our membership fee look trivial Interesting concept, and a lot of time to get it correct. And I bet they spent a lot of time browsing here Trust they didn't pinch any photos!! We might have to look at copyright issues ourselves Offshore

I don't think it is too smart. They then only need to crack your PW, or somehow reset it, and they can clean out any monies there. They would also have access to your CC details! And I wouldn't be looking to PP for any support, they would be looking after their own arses! I'm not clear how these guys actually achieve what they do, but it won't be on my accounts. O/S

I currently have a car for sale on a www site. Cannot credit the number of phishing emails I have received, trying to get my bank details, and PP account info. The stories being told, range from a pro buyer in the UK purchasing for a client in Saudi, to an Amnesty Int worker, currently on assignment in the Sudan, all wanting to buy sight unseen, and even pay me over my asking price. The one common denominator is a request for my bank or PP details. Thanks to my exposure here, it is not something I would fall for, however I can only imagine the number of gullible sellers out there, who just can't believe their good fortune Interestingly, I have only been able to generate a couple of legit enquiries in a bit over a month. Compared to more than 20 of these phishing contacts! Offshore

Fair go Dems. I'll come in, and snipe it at the end! Ahhh, thats right, its a raffle, not an auction, and we ain't allowed into it....mores the pity! Offshore

Sometimes there are bargains on the 'bay!

So the Vibrograf arrived this morning. It has a couple of small issues- the ink ribbon has long since dried up, but I have sourced a new one. Also the cable connection to the microphone was intermittent, nothing a quick soldering job didn't overcome. Hopefully by tomorrow it is operating 100%. I had contacted Vibrograf, and got a copy of the operating instructions for a model similar. Can work thru quite Ok with that info.(it was too old a model for them still to have any information, except I did find a circuit diagram on the net for it) An interesting thing is that it is a 1956 model. The scale for beats, doesn't include 28800, however there is a formula to work out where the scale should be placed. So it would appear that 28800 is newer than 1956! Didn't know that. Also in the box was a magnificent old cast caseback/crystal press. No dies unfortunately, and they are different size fitting than my existing die sets. Something else to search for whilst I am in GZ next month! The press was seized solid, but a couple of hours in Penetrene had it as good as new! Looking good, for not a lot of $$$. Offshore -
Yep,you will need to do the up date. O/S

Guide on hand removal and installation?
offshore replied to JohnDorian's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
I would grab the 1st one. It won't be a gen Presto, but you will get a few more items, including a set of hand fitters. Alternatively the 2nd last one is good value. O/S -
Guide on hand removal and installation?
offshore replied to JohnDorian's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Basically-Yes. Be very sure the day/date change has completed its cycle. Some movements have an instant change at 12, others can start to change at around 9 and take until 3 or after to complete the total change. Also always a good idea to advance the hands forwards (clockwise) Cycling backwards can sometimes also do some damage. It is really about knowing the intricacies of each specific movement, and we all are still learning all the time! O/S -
Puggs, I agree totally, although when the parts came out, you would still be recasing humid air. You could case a watch and leave it with the stem out in a bag with silica gel, and then close the stem before undoing the bag, which should work. Unfortunately, this is good for one off jobs, but when you are doing bulk battery changes, (This last week I had 150 to do, & was doing on average 15/hr) using a bag would be impractical.... even trying to dry each unit as you were recasing would slow things down dramatically. I do think a dehumidifier is the answer for my home shop, and maybe I just won't be able to do battery changes at the market (or any other work which requires opening the case back!) Makes you wonder how all the guys in the mall kiosks get on. Must just put up with clients complaining. O/S

I was talking today with a local watchmaker. We were commenting on the many quartz which we were seeing with "seized" drive trains. (I had 7 come to me on Sunday, all with the circuit OK but hands not running) There is a quick fix by running the train at speed, using a demagnetizer, to clean the corrosion/verdigris off.....not exactly to the watchmakers handbook, but effective nevertheless. This problem, is due in the main to the high levels of humidity in our local area. Every time we open a case to change a battery, or carry out any work, we reseal it with humid air inside. Subsequently a problem can exist due to this. So I put forward the thought, that maybe we should be working in a closed workroom, with a dehumidifier running. Now this wouldn't help me for working at my outdoor market stall, but I guess my be an answer for my in house repairs. I would be interested in others thoughts on this, and also how the humid air may affect a mechanical watch in the longer term. Offshore

Guide on hand removal and installation?
offshore replied to JohnDorian's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
It is clever to pull the hands off with the hour pointing at an hour and the minute on 12, doesn't really matter, but it is how I do it. When re installing set the hour hand anywhere on the pinion. Now advance it until the date clicks over, Now set it to 12. Now advance it a few hours, (I normally run it to 9.) With the hour hand directly on 9 now fit the minute hand @12. Now your hands are all in the correct position and date changes @12. Now fit second hand (doesn't matter where.) To fit hands, I use the sticky section of a post it note, to pick up the hand from the underside with the hole or pin sticking out over the edge. This gives a very stable rest to get them into position. ( This technique is detailed somewhere within the archives here....worth the search as it has pictures etc) That how-to is a few years back now. Hope this helps. O/S -
"View new content", under the header, right hand side. This works differently than previous. See the discussions elsewhere here. (Some have needed to click it twice) Offshore

Admins - Where does one announce a GTG now?
offshore replied to BobM's topic in Introduction/Rules/Support
Bob, Due to the high incidence of alcoholic stupor and pregnancies, associated with previous GTG's, the team have decided not to promote these activities further (Put'em in GD until it is sorted!!) Also the shoutbox is broke, the repairman is on his way. Our move to the new software has created more than a few issues (It's a bit like Triage at the moment) Just bear with us whilst these issues are being sorted. As Thomas has requested, if they can be addressed here- http://www.rwgforum.com/tracker/ they will be resolved ASAP. Offshore -
