  1. http://www.timezone.com/library/archives/a...703251272822958 Another article on gold from timezone. I don't really see why rose gold would be considered a "polluted" form of yellow gold, other than based on one's own preferences. Yellow gold is made by combining gold with zinc, copper and silver, just the same as rose gold. It's just a different composition of alloy. Yellow gold and rose gold are worth the same carat for carat. Even with 18kt yellow gold, the alloy mix can be adjusted. So just because your rep dealer says something is 18kt gold that doesn't necessarily mean it will be an exact color match to the gen. Price notwithstanding, a full platinum watch would be pretty cool to have.
  2. I'm pretty sure that's the E series.
  3. Asian unitas titanium pam. Cheap, good-looking, comfy, tough.
  4. Speaking of relentless and not funny, what's with Paulmart's recent decision to [censored] on all the other dealers? I mean, the "so-called" ultimate Sub? River pays more wholesale than he sells retail? Is that crap really necessary?
  5. An SD is not meaningfully "bigger" than a GMT or Exp II in terms of visual impact. It's thicker and heavier, but otherwise the sport rolexes are all around 40mm. I would still go with the SD but because I like the looks of it, not because it's "big."
  6. I've also got the orange monster, I agree it's a terrific watch. Still, it's nice to know you can swim with your rep at a pinch, and the reality is that Pam reps make very good all-around watches and do not need to be babied.
  7. I think the scammers have read Paul's bragging and realized they can make more money selling reps than scamming people, and almost as easily.
  8. The same thing happens with my Navi rep. My advice is, live with it and be glad you don't have bigger problems. A skilled watchsmith could probably overhaul the movement for you for around $150. Or you buy and install a swiss movement for around double that. IMO, manually stop it at 12 o'clock and forget about it.
  9. I swam several days recently in Palm Springs wearing my Pam 118 rep. I also wear it while working out all the time. No problems at all, and the light weight makes it really good despite the size. I did lube the seal on the caseback and screw it in nice and right, and perform the non-scientific sink test first.
  10. One of the easiest ways that you can tell rep rolexes is the SEL's. They are solid on the better reps, but instead of being machined in three pieces like the gens they are one pressed piece. It's not too bad, but once you've seen real SEL's, it's very easy to tell the fakes. It's another reason why vintage reps are a better bet if you want to fool people. It's also pretty easy to tell the fake owners. Let's say I'm a knowledgeable watchsmith. You bring in a nearly new "Sub." It looks pretty good and I wouldn't assume it was fake normally, but it's got a completely unacceptable defect (marker falling off the dial), and instead of insisting an AD fix it under warranty you have brought it to me to get it fixed on the cheap. That's not what real owners do. The watch has a $25 non-OEM band on it even though it's far too new to need a replacement band and very, very few real Sub owners would put such a cheap band on their watch. I don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out at this point that your watch is almost certainly a fake, which is confirmed when you don't even LOOK at what I wrote on the work order. A real Rolex customer would INSIST that I describe the watch in a fair amount of detail (e.g., "1970's TT genuine men's Rolex Datejust, in excellent condition") so that he has clear documentation of precisely what he put in my possession. Instead, you just stuff whatever I gave you into your pocket, as if you have entrusted me with a Timex. I may be completely honest, but I've met enough Rolex owners (who are a pretty anal bunch) to know that this level of disinterested trust from a new customer who puts a $4,000 watch into my possession is abnormal. Hey, if it breaks like a $100 watch, has a band like a $100 watch, and a has an owner that acts like it's worth $100, then it's pretty obvious that's what it is.
  11. http://www.etaworldgoods.com/breitling9.htm I see honpo stole a lot of my translation. I had a feeling it might, but at least Ken could have asked. That's the last time I do that for the benefit of the members. It's no big deal obviously but I don't appreciate the lack of courtesy.
  12. It's not a mistake, the watch is made at the Swilzerland Watch Factory in China -- ergo, Made in Swilzerland. I am, of course, just kidding. Honpo is currently offering in Japan this watch + one pam + one vintage rolex for $500 . . . now if Paul would beat that at say $400 we'd really have a crazy sale worth talking about . . .
In other words, I'm not sure why you think the price ($295 watch only) is so unacceptable. After all, Daytona, CA's basically cost the same, as does the Navitimer which IMO is not this good.
  14. http://shopping.e-conveni.net/item_info.ht...ucts_id=823120& Looks pretty good -- Pams beware! Here's a translation of the text: Breitling mega-huge Bentley Motors The Bentley/Breitling collaboration model This is a mega-huge 49mm chronograph! Specs *NEW 28800bph calendar equipped Asian 7750 *Dome sapphire crystal *Case is SUS machined 47mm diameter *Latticed bentley logo design *Weight approx. 239g (yikes practically 2x my gen Exp II ) *Red font date wheel *Various print/engraving work beyond complaint *Clasp unique to Bentley model *Water resistant for regular use (no warranty) *Adjustable tachymeter bidirectional bezel (detailed finish) *Pictured Breitling box included (2000 yen less without box) Comments The much sought-after Breitling Bentley Motors Super-striking 49mm chrono face seems more striking than big in our opinion. Minor issues are that the calculations on the dial and the chrono needle's movement and placement is not the same as the genuine. With the limits of the existing movement there is nothing that can be done about that, but seeing how the rest of it is so excellent, it is a real shame. Still, even considering that, with this quality at this price, we feel this is a watch that we can recommend. The quality of the case, bezel, and clasp are top-quality and beyond complaint Front and back, this is an ultra-stylish piece!
  15. I think that z4shady8crazyx or whatever is 18.
  16. Well by-tor, at least you haven't gotten pm's asking you to buy something from watchhonpo and ship it to them, with me getting paid when the watch arrives. That's pretty nervy.
  17. With all due respect, River's prices are very competitive. He includes free shipping and I get my watches from him in 4 days. I'm not going to catalog the prices of everything I got from him, but he charged me $149 for a Asian unitas 177, and $249 for a Asian 7750 212. At the time I bought these watches, that was as low or lower than pretty much anybody, especially when you consider free shipping and his lightning fast delivery. Also, at least here in Japan, customs is less suspicious regarding Taiwan packages than mainland China packages -- call it prejudice, it's just how it is -- so that gives me a little extra peace of mind. I don't buy from him just because of his low prices, but I don't feel like he's ever charged me a premium either. Anyway, I appreciate that aspire's Wal-mart like approach to the rep business has probably brought everyone's prices down, and I'm sure it's a great place to buy watches and all that. But I don't think a seller who sells a 1,000 watches a day or whatever needs to take shots at River. He is not only a good dealer, he has good prices too.
  18. Chinese workers can make iPods, Sony TV's and stereos, Dell computers . . . they can put together anything correctly so long as they get proper parts, training and instructions, same as anyone else. The problem isn't the guy making the watch so much as the people running the factory. I remember reading an interview with a US executive at a large company who basically said that the notion that Chinese factories can't make top-quality stuff is mostly a crock . . . he admitted that he was aware of many companies that shift output to China, purposely downgrade specs and materials at the same time and then blame it on "shoddy Chinese worksmanship." It's a convenient way for them to cash in with both hands while shifting blame for any quality issues. I imagine rep makers pretty much do the same thing, to the extent they care at all . . .
  19. http://shopping.e-conveni.net/item_info.ht...ucts_id=819341& Well, so it's not just a rumor. 30000 yen ($275) seems not unreasonable, and it's 47mm. However, the caveats along the lines that this watch is "good for a beginner collector" who doesn't care so much about exactness seems a bit ominous. I'm not familiar with this watch so I'm not sure what the issues are, but the text states "picky individuals please do not buy, absolutely no returns for dissatisfaction other than mechanical problems." Although it is in honpo's credit it is very honest in describing the watches it carries. My mistake, I see this has already been discussed . . . please disregard.
  20. Why, does Panerailord have a Hermeslady? Do my lord and ladyship grace stately Replicamanor in Facsimiland?
  21. I think if PaneraiLord doesn't feel buying reps is "worth it" then he should not buy them. It's just a hobby, and both reps and gens are completely unnecessary toys in the grand scheme of things. I don't think it matters in the least what your motivations or finances are. You should do -- I know this sounds crazy -- what makes you happy. But frankly the "revelation" that one should buy gen instead of reps is an entirely personal one and I do not believe constitutes some kind of definitive, objective insight. You can question pretty much any way in which people choose to spend their money. There was a kid on TimeZone who was talking about getting extra student loans to buy a Panerai because he can't wait till he gets a job and can afford one on his own. Is this a smarter or more admirable decision than buying a rep or buying a Casio? Is this less of a pretension to status than just buying a fake watch? I personally would say no, but hey, to each his own.
  22. I don't take any of this personally. I understand that my earlier posts were a bit obnoxious in tone, so I do apologize if I was unnecessarily flippant when you were being serious. But that having been said, who TF am I? Well, if we're going to go down that path who TF are you? Who TF are most of us on this board? We're just some guys posting opinions. You want to say I'm wrong, fine. I am often wrong about lots of things. But don't get into how you're smarter than me or more credible than me. That's neither here nor there. And don't tell me who can and can't post on this board, and what opinions are "worthy" of inclusion and which are not. That's not your call to make.
  23. It doesn't really matter salt water or delicious jello pudding. Atm is a metric measurement, and as such it is not mathematically defined in feet, although it is done so in England and the US out of convenience, not accuracy. Your formula is a rule of thumb, not an actual formula.
  24. I've got the rose gold TT version. It's pretty accurate and pretty nice but I don't know, something about it doesn't really work for me. There's no glaring flaw but it just doesn't seem as good-quality as some other reps, especially considering I paid $300 for it. Also the strap isn't so great (not terrible, but not something you'd see on a $5,000 watch) and there's no way of replacing it.
  25. I don't know where the 99ft comes from. 4 ATM is 40meters -- 135.6 feet
