That's very good news for my Son. The genuine replica Rolex GMT 'JoeyB' will make him rich when I kick the bucket...

When making a silk purse from a sow's ear is anything easy? In essence, that's what we do. We take a $100 - $300 Chinese watch and work it, build it, shape it and make it as indistinguishable as we can from a $6,000+ Swiss watch. We learn how to do it from others here, and can feel great pride in our work and effort when we post the pics of our labor and others give compliments. Easy? If it was easy anyone could do it.

They are on Ebay, though the seller is not a popular one here. Others have the 3 hands without the GMT hand in black. WHOLESALEOUTLET990 All the ETA28xx movements take the same hour (1.50), minute(.90), second hands(.25). The GMT 4th hand on the ETA 2893-2 is .180, the same as the genuine Rolex 4th hand. The GMT 4th hand on the modified ETA 2836-2 is usually not .180, varies by Chinese factory, most I have are 2.00. I don't know of any in black.

Exactly. In fact in my experience, the only ones who got close enough to see any 'tells' were female and not interested in my watch. Neither was I in those moments... No one has ever questioned me if my watch was a 'fake' or not, and that includes an accidental and not very comfortable encounter with the AD in Waikiki. I think it's all in one's own presentation.

I've never cared for the hollow mid-links and stamped clasp on the older genuine Rolex sport models. It always seemed to me that for the price they should have done the bracelets better. The 'new' Glide-Lock clasp that comes on the DSSD is an "engineering masterpiece" in my opinion. I've put them on my 16710 and 166710 reps. And I used the newer hidden clasp Jubillee on my 6542 because it's a more solid piece.

I found this while looking for something else. rep 6542. I've seen this picture before on several sites, at least one is a scam site. The difference here is that this one is $106 usd while the others were all well over $200. I emailed this one, asked for more pics. First he said he had no more pics but had the watch in stock. He pushed me to buy it, but I insisted on more pics, and he said he'd get them. When I insisted on more pics from that scam site last year they sent me pics of a very bad 1675. We'll see what happens here.

I think Narikaa has them.

Yeah, I knew that and really should have posted it correctly. But that rep's insert, like the after-market ones, is acrylic. Yep, me too. Actually that pic is what gave me the idea to 'blend in' the insert I bought from you. After I finish a current project I am going back to my black 6542 and do the dial and insert differently. I really want the look of the insert in the Marron pic, which means white bezel numbers. I just assumed from it's condition that it was an after-market insert. All the better. Then those would be the replacements after the radioactive scare. I thought they used them as original after that for the rest of the 6542 run. ROTFLMAO!!!!!!! I didn't want to be, it's all yor fault!!
-
The site says "bi-directional rotating bezel, bezel made from acrylic which is the same as genuine, first in replica!" and we know that the original was bakelite. I think the fonts are right but maybe thinner? I've seen those colors on gens. How would we know what color is right when we have no new gen insert to judge from? the T<25 refers to the Tritium content in the lume. You'd think that if you and I could build our own 4th hand that the factory could do better than that. GREAT CATCH!! Good eye, freddy, I missed that.

freddy, the insert looks good to me, though I'd blend it in more, the 4th hand arrow isn't right and I can't see if the word 'date' is not on the dial but I'd guess they'd get that right. I can't put my finger on it, but the watch just somehow doesn't look right to me. What does your eye say? Also. in the description two things of interest. "bi-directional rotating bezel, bezel made from acrylic which is the same as genuine, first in replica!" "Other bezel and dial colors will be released too."

Mary is Watchinternational in the dealer section.

While looking for something else, I came across this. I had no idea it existed. They must have had a lot of fun in the 1950s at Rolex! Pan American International Airlines White Dial GMT Master[Reference 1675] Circa 1960 This watch is extremely rare. Almost all Rolex GMT Masterwatches have black dials. Rolex originally developed the Rolex GMT at therequest of Pan American International Airlines and in Rolex folklore they madeblack dials for the pilots and white dials for executives. The photo aboveshows the Pan Am logo engraved in the back of the watch. The bezel was replaced on this watch but everything else isoriginal. This watch has a number of interesting design details beyond the rarewhite dial. The arrow at the tip of the 24 hour hand is very small and thecrown guards have an unusual curved to a point shape.

I must have purchased at least 10, maybe 12 watches from Mary, she's my primary supplier. I've never received any in that condition. I know that she is very busy now, but that is no excuse. I also know she has her younger brother helping her now and she was angry with him for lousy pics of a watch I wanted. Mary is trying to be the contact and 'bargainer' with the factories while her help handles the orders and shipping. Hopefully it's just growing pangs. Mary usually handles any issues beautifully. Luthier over on RWG1.1 is very close with Mary, and the very few complaints are jumped on immediately when brought to his attention. Ask her how to ship it back to her. I'm certain she will help you to your satisfaction. Any dealer can sell us a new watch that is right. What makes a good dealer is how they handle it when something goes wrong.

I've gotten them from Ofrei and genuine from Clark's. They seem to me to be the same high quality. I think Clark's has both gen and high quality aftermarket, depending on his inventory. And no minimum.

The script and markers are dark, black or close to it. I doubt the dial is faded from any dark color. I don't think there is any lume on it. Reading various versions of Rolex history, particularly in the `50s, they were experimenting and making prototypes quite a bit. Rolex won't help clarify any of it, they probably don't know themselves. -

freddy, beautiful Daytona collection! Thank God my old eyes can't read the dials or I'd have to pursue those too... -
No question, Sammy was as cool as could be. I always liked the onyx dial for dress. It took some doing but I found one a couple of years ago in the President Day-Date. freddy, we seem to have the same taste in watches. Thankfully I already have this one. You're wearing me out!

As freddy said, Clark's is very good. You need to order the Clark's hands for the "Tudor Submariner" to fit any of the ETA 28xx movements as that was what was genuine in the Tudor, Clark's will not have the GMT or 4th hand to fit the GMT modified ETA 2836-2. That 4th hand must come from one of our Chinese suppliers, or you will have to modify one yourself.

As a veteran of other rep forums I think this place has the most and best knowledge and information about vintage Rolex anywhere.
-
When I first discovered the GMT I immediately fell in love with it. The function fits my needs and the look is simply beautiful. But I never much cared for the 'Pepsi' insert or the Jubilee bracelet, preferring instead the 'Coke' black and red. I like the all black insert too, the AD in Waikiki tried to sell me on changing my rep retro 'Coke' over to all black a few years back. I also was of the opinion that such a beautiful watch was shortchanged by Rolex using a stamped insert and a cheesy clasp on their bracelets. I felt that the GMTII ceramic was the 'ultimate' GMT with a proper insert, but I missed the holes in the bigger case. With the introduction of the DSSD I added the Glide-lock clasp to both of my GMTIIs. Near Perfection! But after coming to these watch forums and learning from all the knowledge here, things have changed a bit for me. While researching all the forums to learn as much as I could about building a vintage GMT, I ran into freddy's 6542. None of the dealers had the 6542 so I didn't know it even existed until then. With freddy's help I built one and truly love it. And now it's all changed for me. While I still love my GMTIIs, the 'Pepsi' insert with the Jubilee has become my favorite. And as much as I like the plastic/bakelite 6542 insert, I like the stamped 'Pepsi' almost as much. I now find that Nanuq's watch is simply gorgeous. If there were no reps and I had to choose just one genuine GMT I would have a very difficult time making a choice. I agree with Nanuq and freddy, the new insert looks best. And I further agree with freddy that I prefer to let the vintage watches I build 'age' with me. And that's the beauty of this hobby. You can do it any way you like.
-
I really could not agree more.
-
Then you're set. The 2836-2 will give you the correct hand stack for the later 1675 and all you need is the regular arrow size GMT hand that will fit that modified movement. I don't know how consistent our Chinese friends are with their modified Swiss or Asian ETA 2836-2, but the one I have measures 1.9mm, and the genuine GMT hand measures 1,7mm. So you'll need an Asian GMT hand.
