  1. I'm glad it wasn't a completely crazy idea! lol I agree that there are issues that will need to be dealt with but I'm not entirely sure how to get over them... Nothing's impossible though
  2. Well, I don't like to name and shame... ... so let's just say that I don't think their success will be PERPETUAL...
  3. Yeah, it was something like that, bundled into a rather long rant... lol
  4. Evening all Somewhat randomly, just at the point of waking up this morning, I had an idea. Bear with me on this one... We all like reviews of new watches, such as By-Tor's. But how often have we seen a watch on a site and wondered what it's actually like? Someone has to take the risk and buy it before anyone really knows (the recently reviewed $108 IWC Portuguese 1939 being an example) and that can be expensive... So, how about this for a proposal... Subscribers can opt to pay a little bit extra each month. This extra then goes into a pot. The subscribers who have ticked this option then get to choose perhaps 1 watch a month that they want reviewed, be it through general consensus or a poll if opinion is divided. The money in the pot is used to buy the watch and have it sent to a nominated reviewer, who then reviews it and posts the pics and detailed information on it in a review thread. Once it is reviewed, all the subscribers who have paid the extra are then placed into a hat and a name drawn from it. This person then 'wins' the watch, and the reviewer posts it on. (I imagine the pot will also have to be used to reimburse the reviewer for this.) This seems, to me, to be a win-win situation. The board wins because new watches are reviewed and knowledge is gained, and potentially a good new watch is found, and the subscribers win because for a small investment they get to find out about a number of new watches that they would otherwise have to take a risk on. They also win because they are in with a chance of winning the watch being reviewed! This would of course only work with a large number of subscribers taking up the option in order that a decent pot is gathered each month (I guess it would also be possible for the pot to 'roll over' into a second month for an expensive watch if the subsribers agreed) and I have no idea how big the numbers are so this may be completely unworkable lol I just thought I'd float it as an idea, though! I'm going to go back and hide under my n00b rock again now lol
  5. So do B&R, the Hydromax. Think that's 11100m rated!
  6. Thanks for the replies, all. I'm glad I'm not going mad or asking the earth! It's a real shame as I really do like the piece, but I don't feel happy giving someone money just to insult me. I've contacted one of the dealers here instead and think I will be spending my money with them instead! Gutted, but ce la vie...
  7. Old style? New Style?? Do you mean the older style ones are the ones nearer the bottom of the page on the site?
  8. Hi Chris, I'm a n00b so am still learning, but from what's been said on here you may be getting an order quite soon... I've emailed you off the site (apologies for all the questions!) so will look forward to hearing from you
  9. Hey all, I apologise if this is a n00b topic! As I understand it, ordering a watch off one of the dealers on here is usually a smooth transaction, and to give you peace of mind it appears that most dealers will be willing to photograph the actual watch they are sending before they send it, to make sure you're happy with it (and to make sure they don't have to deal with any returns, of course). I would have thought that this logic extended to everyone but apparently not - I have had emails this week with somewhere making/selling 'own brand' watches (NOT one of the dealers on here) and I am a little surprised by what he has said... I pointed out that a couple of the roman numeral indices were wonky on the picture on the website (such as the separate I's in the III not all being perfectly straight/aligned) and asked if it was possible for them to check the watches before they are sent out. (The website wording says they are big on QC.) I also asked if it was possible to get a picture of the watch when I was ordering. Now, I don't think I asked anything majorly bad there, did I? His response was, to paraphrase: Don't consider our watches seriously. These issues are normal due to the rough [his emphasis] guilloche dial. The photo on the website was taken to point out that this happens. We can't offer perfection at this price point. Do you look at your watch with a magnifying glass all the time? You have the right to choose your watch but this is not a 2-way transaction - I have a camera on my desk but won't take a photo as it's not justified at the price point. Good luck finding what you're looking for. [sarcasm, anyone?] I'm willing to accept that a watch will have flaws but if they have five on a shelf and one is better than the rest, I would like to think that they might make just a little extra effort to make a sale and, potentially, future sales - I was actually thinking about buying a second watch later as I like the other models they sell a lot, but now I'm not sure I want to, on principle alone. And the price point on these? Around US$170. So am I wrong to ask for photos at that price? Am I being unrealistic? Is that a reasonable response from him? I was looking forward to ordering one but I'm hesitating as I'm unsure if I'm happy with how his attitude comes across Sorry for the rant, any advice gratefully received
  10. Cool, duly noted for future reference
  11. I think they are still doing them! http://www.watchmaker9.tv/products/datejust.htm White faced 16200 is my choice.
  12. Wow, that's awesome! And you've just answered the very questions I was going to ask! lol I think I will start to keep an eye out for things on the 'bay and see what comes up... I've already spotted a couple of dials on there so I will have to get researching then start to look! Thank you for your help
  13. Hmmmm..... *scratches chin while thinking* That certainly makes things more interesting, Ubi. Perhaps I may have to start my first project!
  14. A little out of my potential budget at the moment lol The WM9 16200 comes in at under $400 - it seems to me very good value for what it is, although I am a n00b!
  15. Thanks for the advice on the WM9 DJs. I was looking today and noticed that the 16200 looks remarkably good value for a Swiss ETA version but if they're not accurate then are they worth the money?
  16. You can't really fight a desire though - I could never give up being interested in cars and driving, it's part of my make up. Without such things we become mere puppets of others' wishes. I say speak to her and, if you do want to get back together, talk through your issues. If you can reach a compromise position where you spend no more than $XXX dollars a month or a fixed percentage of your take home pay on watches (although she doesn't have to know your full take home pay and overtime ) in return for her not getting stressed about it, then all will be good It's like you demanding that she doesn't buy shoes or doesn't look at the Sales - impossible to maintain without bearing a grudge about it that will make you angry in the long term!!
  17. Thanks for the info in this thread I was just about to start a new thread to ask the very question posed by the OP when I suddenly remember to not be a n00b and do some proper searching, and surprise surprise here are the answers!
  18. *sudden thought* Would it just be easier to buy new tubes and screws from one place and replace the whole lot, rather than trying to find one or two matching screws??
  19. I'm currently speaking to Andrew too about lost B&R screws - the problem is that there appear to be a number of different sources of B&R, each seemingly using different screws... As I don't know where mine was bought from (it was a gift) we're struggling to narrow it down!
  20. Day-Date and Day-Just are different Rolex models, if that's what you're asking about? http://www.watchmaker9.tv/products/datejust.htm http://www.watchmaker9.tv/products/day_date.htm
  21. I don't think I'll ever have the cash to get a passable rep version so I have considered spending a fair wedge of money on one of Vaccum's creations. They're customised to you and look good, plus you can't really get 'called out' as they're clearly not supposed to be accurate to a gen!
  22. I've only seen on film at an IMAX cinema and loved it. I must go again!
  23. Ok, I should have read the FAQs on the site lol Shipping is guaranteed - if it doesn't turn up they will send another No bulk discounts though, boooo!
