Of course if you want piece of mind why not just pay the fees on PP or split them and base the price on the cost of the genuine parts listed out on an invoice.. so its a parts sale rather than built watch that way it aint a franken etc etc But I agree with above..if in doubt dont and if you do then make sure you consider all the 'what ifs' and the resolution... Concepta is a good guy and I dont see any scamming being an issue here but things happens..I recall once he sent to the wrong address and it was lost etc but he did put it right... Just be absolutely clear about what you expect from the deal for the money and let Concepta reply and agree or discuss..etc and also consider method of shipping etc if face to face aint realistic...

Is there an alternative to a 6498 set up ? Any advice would be appreciated :)
PeteM replied to PeteM's topic in Movement Q&A
I have found from research myself that there are a number of options to sourcing alternative movements... You can go with Vintage movements generally in Pocket wtaches... for example the Hamiltons Caliber 917, 921, 925 and others plus you ahve the Elgins, Bentix, plus many others. Most are 6497 layouts ie secs at 9 whereas fewer are 6498 secs at 6... the majority are posted in sales as US sized so for a 6497/6498 the closest you will get is size 10 which is 16 7/8 lignes whereas Unitas ETA 6497/98s are 16 1/2 lignes which basically means you need to have a bigger case and dial to allow for increased size..so yes its possible but you need to consider all aspects of the build.. The size of the dial, the case, hand stack and crown/tube etc but yes its possible with a good watchsmith The key though is the fact that most vintage movements based on 6497/98s is that they have no shocks... so the likelihood of breaking the staffs in the movements is much greater even a gentle knock or eeven dropping it on the sofa could braek the staffs...in which case you need spares either from other collected moevments or made specifcially for your movements... Of course you could look at other cheaper movemnets like the Seagulls or The Hangzhou's these are Chinese but they do make some very nicely decorated movements... yes they are or can be more cheaply made but as an laternative and with care can last a long time... Or you can go for the newer 6497/98 that are from the smaller brand watch companies like Stowa, Steinhart, etc mainly German brands do the nice decorating but other companies use the ETAs like LumTec etc... If you want to see some lovely decoirated 6497/98s then try Tourby's site under the movement section... some gorgeous ones there..plus on Dornblueths watch site..they do gorgeous movements but are so expensive... and very few get into the for sale unmounted .. however they do appear plus you might find cheap whole watches ..cheap as in relative to just buying an highly decorated ETA . The key thing in searching though if you are looking for a vintage swiss 6497/98 or even just a cheap one for a PAM project etc is to remember that there are so many old defunct watch makers who used these movements in there watches and clocks.... to many to find a definitive list so one way of finding cheaper ones is to find them in watches where the seller doesnt know or understand whats in the watch and the brand is pretty unknown .. Look for the guys that make money from selling unmounted movements... they find the watches part them out and sell the movement on ebay... if you find these then look at the brand name on those movements and then search for those watch brands in watches... that way you can find someone selling their old watch/dads watch etc etc who lists it as just watch with brand name and nothing else... these can go for as little as £10 of course factor in if working and allow for servicing costs etc though remember its a risk as some damage could be unrepairable though you could still use the base plate that stamped ETA ;) so if its cheap then its worth the risk.. But you could pick up a working unmounted swiss 6497/98 for around £30 to £90 or a -1 version for £80 to £130... and in watches sold by guys who dont know could be got for a few pounds or certainly under £50 working... Brands include Baylor, Wyler, Royce, Caravelle, (which is Bulova), old Longines, Denex, Elgin, Hamilton, Pingouin...the list goes on and on So size of movement is 36.6mm Diameter or 16 1/2 Lignes... Other measurements can vary but you need to consider that against your proposed case/dial etc -
Whatever you go for will need work and or different parts to create a decent version and it can be decent but the biggest thing you wont get right (In terms of it sitting on your wrist) on any of the options except *** is the pin and its hole ... though really I think thats pretty daft to say on my part... none really pass muster barring ***'s but can be made to look good enough to the uninitiated.. It really comes down to how good is good... its a sliding scale of 'good' I guess... Of the people you meet in a year when you are wearing it.... less than 1% might recognise the finer details of a highly modded PreV rep and a gen.... less than 10% will know the difference between a decent modded PreV rep and a gen... another 10 % or just over will know what a PreV is...another 25% will have heard of a PAM and the rest wont even notice whats on your wrist (assuming you dont go to GTGs !! ) It really comes down to what your expectation and own standard is... Its like the current OTB reps ... most guys consider them good enough to wear everyday without worrying about being called out ... however there is more chance of you meeting someone that would know one of the latest 'super PAM reps' than someone that would know how to spot a rep modded PreV... I have seen a few guys in the wild wearing the latest 111M and a few other models from the Noob or H that were standing in queues etc...I have recognised them as rep as soon as they scratch their nose... I have seen car salesman wearing them across the desk and again can see they are rep straight off.. good as some guys here may think these reps are...there will always be someone that will spot them... the chances of it are governed by your circle of friends and social context... Most call outs are guessed because of the way you look/dress/live/what you drive etc etc.... not because someone knows .. (generally that is) So if you want passable in the crowd then an LH or Goin is more than passable.... if you want the best you can get then a V CG modded or LH CG modded etc and ultimately the 'Fat CG' as its called by those that have them is the way to go... but you will need patience and skill to do it and if not then a WTB or regular search of sales will help but you will need luck as most are sold behind the forums amongst friends and Rep Ristis...

Basically I am asking for the caliber designations Like Omega refer to thier 6498 movements as 2211a and 2201a What are the other 6498 based movements designated as by those brands Thanks -

Hi Guys I was wondering if any of you in your travels might have come across an alternative to the 6498 (-1/-2) secs at 6 set up? I am looking for something 'decorated' or 'unusual' that would look good in a display caseback... effectively something 'pretty' I suppose I had been looking to use a gen ETA 6498 for an Omega Franken build and use some rep plates... however the only option rep plate wise would be inaccurate and so maybe not worth the effort.. I then thought about going with some gen Omega movements parts but the cost really doesnt warrant the watch as it would end up costing the same as the gen !! So then i thought why not just go for something aesthetically pleasing in the display back... I have the gen dial and hands which is set up for basically a 6498-2 running secs at 6..However its the Omega version which is Cal 2201a. As you might have guessed its for a Railmaster XXL 49.2mm So is there anything out there maybe along the lines of a Cortbert, Elgin etc.... though brand is irrelevant for thsi exercise.. that will work as a simple repalcement option and is within a reasonable budget of say an ETA 6498? Any help or advice from your experiences would be much appreciated Thank you

Nice to see you reply mate.. So the buyer knew the parts were damaged from your discussions...? ( I am not sure if you are implying that or I am just inferring it? ) If so that undermines the complaint OP... I have also seen the crap David used to send out that F mentions.....

So if the Terminator wears the T3 what will Mrs Terminator wear?

Not likely to find that one hanging from the rear view mirror !! -
So OP did you buy off Denimhead or off David through DH? I know David has offered DH up as his EU base contact and forwarder... Or was this a private deal? Post up the sales link now please

+1 Well on the face of it mate...you should be looking to get some recourse.... That said without the whole story its a hard one to reply to.... Yes the rep world has quirks but getting items misdescribed or missold is not one of them...

The only reason for that is that they are worried you might be smuggling the crims in the packages back to blighty !! Everyone knows it was alwasy cheaper to get to Oz than it was to get out of it !!

Is that still with same weight ? Because I found that stuff can vary sending flat rate if the weight was over the standard limit... on average I used to pay around $22 priority standard flat rate box with a watch and strap (I usually buy bigger wtaches!! ) in it but say a couple of straps were $16.95... I only ask because that might mean that new figure would be closer to $30 for standard flat rate if weight limit was passed? ...(weight dependant) I always found it hard to get a standard rate from a lot of US deals, I always put it down to a lack of understanding by individuals with the postal services in the main...... it like that in the UK there are many options to send internationally and if you dont know and rely on advice from over the counter ..you tend to get whats best for the courier not you or the recipient... Having said that our own Postal services have gone up 4 times in the last 18 months.......!! The equivilent of USPS Priority in UK is Airsure...and they dont do flat rate box ... so an average to US by the equivilent by UK Postal service is £12 ($20) but insurance to £500 max is extra..usually around 50p for each £100 insured. However that price is about the same for anywhere WW We have EMS but that is given by another postal service 'Parcelforce' which is a sister company of Royal Mail Post....... and that to US is around £32 ($50)... and thats the cheapest EMS options... rip off really... And lets not gets started on dealer rates !!

IMHO you can never beat the Cashmere or the JV.... I tried so many on mine and always went back to the Cashmere and JV as my preference.... The burgundy I never really got on with...but maybe I didnt keep it long enough.... I never really liked any of the Vintage styled straps like Gunny etc...it never seemed to work for me and always made the watch seem like it was trying to be a vintage itself rather than a modern retelling of the original... but its so subjective There are loads of pics in the section mate with some great straps...I posted a load myself and so have so many other guys...

Best way to swap bracelet, leather, and rubber straps
PeteM replied to NYCreplica's topic in General Discussion
Got to agree on that cost mate...it really dont pay to spend on that...as most watches that you would change using that aint the sort of watches you would change that often IMHO Most watches made for variations are screw based lugs... However even if that aint true just get yourself a decent strap changer tool with a few blades... I find so many watches vary depending on the design of the bracelets and how tightly fitted they are... I have used all the above methods depending on the watch... have a look down at Watchbitz for ideas.... or try Esslinger... Personally I would rather do $30-$50 on a strap changing kit and do the other ton on a strap -
Personally I would legalise all drugs and prostitution.... and manage it like any legal medication and in relation to Prostitution like say Tattoo studios/sex shops etc ...And dont tell me that dont work....because whats been going on for the last 50 years aint working either and at least we can take more control than we are managing now and the revenues that legalising it would bring.. War on Terror? My a-rse..... ;) Oh yeah and ban all personal firearms !!!
