  1. I'm somewhat of a rookie when it comes to watches, and I'm looking for a little help/advice. I'm a big guy with a big wrist, and currently have a Panerai Luminor Marina; I enjoy this watch because it is so large, shiny, and heavy. I'm currently looking for a new watch, something that is similar in size and weight to my Panerai. I am looking to get either an IWC or Franck Muller...any suggestions? Thanks!

Get a Fiddy :) have a look at the 47mm 1950 style cases, they are quite substantial with excellent wrist presence, and a certain utilitarian charm.

IWC make the Big Pilot, which comes in a few sizes, but sounds to me you're looking for a Breitling Super Avenger. Thick case, thick bracelet, should do the trick :)

  2. I see thanks.

So Seads mod will make the dial look like a deeper sandwhich?

Not sure what process Sead uses for the dial, the problem is that without the depression, the number cutouts sit on top of the lume and appear shallower as a result, falsely projecting the thickness of the top plate. I have a 111h Ultimate from him, whatever he does, the lume is excellent and the sandwich dial looks great :)

  3. a cell phone in a safe has to scream at the top of it's antenna lungs to try and reach the cell tower. the battery would die a quick death.

Agreed, but MMA said it immediately hard-reset itself. That would imply another much stronger effect, although the battery would run itself down very quickly due to the Faraday cage created by the closed magnetic field. Some genuine science at work here. Seems that the safe is electrified, and the bolt release is controlled by an electrical coil created a magnetic field, retaining the bolt in place. As the correct password is entered the bolt retracts. But that can't be true, what if the power shuts off?

  4. Some watches such as the non-chrono PAMs are rated to 300m in their gen counterparts, the Breitling SOSF to some hundreds more. Their design is inherently water-resistant, so it makes sense that with the right gaskets and greasing, these should at least get a solid 5-10 bar water resistance. The ones to stay away from are the super-deep divers like the DSSD and the Planet Ocean, the He valve does not function correctly in the reps and is a liability in terms of water-resistance..

I'd recommend a Seiko Diver's watch as your 'wet' watch. Classic design, well-under-rated water resistance, plus they are available online at excellent prices.

A minor point, but an important one. No watch is 'waterproof' by definition, they can only be rated to a depth of water-resistance.

  5. I'm guessing (I'm no rocket scientist) that where ever there is current there is also a strong chance of a magnetic field, so no I wouldn't be putting a watch in there.

    Ken

Sounds plausible, I don't think the designers consider how far the magnetic field would penetrate into the safe. Interesting theory, I'll look into it.

    Breitling Chronospace Automatic

From 'Watches of Switzerland', BaselWorld 2011:

A solid 46mm case houses the Calibre 23 movement of the Breitling Chronospace Automatic - including a 1/4th of a second chronograph, 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers. Distinguished by exceptional design, the unusual star-shape ensures ease of use even when wearing gloves (a must for the professional pilot). The bidirectional rotating bezel ensures simple and easy handling of the circular slide to perform all calculations for airborne navigation. The numerals are accentuated by a luminescent coating, for maximum readability, with four dial colours available - Volcano Black, Mariner Blue, Tungsten Grey and Stratus Silver. Water resistant to 200 metres.

    Breitling for Bentley Bernato Racing

    breitling-for-bentley-barnato-racing-chronograph-transparent-case-back.jpg

From 'Watches of Switzerland', BaselWorld 2011:

Joel Woolf Barnato (27 September 1895 – 27 July 1948) was a British financier and racing driver, one of the "Bentley Boys" of the 1920s. He achieved three consecutive wins out of three entries in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The new Breitling for Bentley Barnato Racing series pays tribute to Barnato and they "Bentley Boys" who famously won the race five times.  The Bentley Barnato Racing special series features a spectacular design that makes it the most original of all Breitling for Bentley chronographs. The pointer-type counters are replaced by a highly original disc-type counter system displaying the hours and minutes of the measured time by means of two red triangles. The openworked shape of the silver-toned discs is reminiscent of the steering wheels on the famous Bentley models. The 49mm stainless steel case houses the Breitling Calibre 25B movement with unique 30-second chronograph. An 18ct red gold version is available in limited release (500 pieces). Water resistant to 100 metres.

What do you guys think of the direction of Breitling with these new pieces? I'm loving the Bentley... :)

  7. At the risk of NecroPosting:

Proraso cream or Tabac soap are my preference.

H.L. Thater badger brush (Yes, Badger is worth it. Check Amazon for the Tweezerman brush... a steal at under 13$... Not silvertip, but still nice)

Strop: Straight Razor Designs Premium IV English Bridle Strop (Long).

Razors: Straights. Haven't touched a disposable in years. Don't plan on it again anytime soon.

    Current rotation:

Wade and Butcher 8/8 "For Barbers Use" Wedge

Wade and Butcher 8/8 "For Barbers Use" Near-wedge

Wade and Butcher 7/8 "for Barbers use" Half-hollow/barbers notch

J.R. Torrey... multiple from 5/8 to 6/8... half too full hollow, mostly Square points, some barber notches (Seriously under-rated American steel)

Gold Dollar 6/8 full-hollow round nose as reground by RupRazor (Turned a hunk of crap blade into a wonderful shaver...)

Which blade I choose depends on how much growth I have on the face to remove and how I feel. My favorite blade is the 8/8 Wade and Butcher Near-Wedge... baby butt smooth in one pass with minor touch ups.

Check out the "straight razor place" and "badger and blade" websites for more info shaving like you mean it.

Great info, just bought a tweezerman brush off the 'Bay :)
