Need some help picking out a watch for my mother...
tabularasa415 replied to tabularasa415's topic in General Discussion
Alright, I think I narrowed it down to this: http://www.swissarmy.com/us/product/Timepieces/Category/Classic/Officer-s/Officer-s/241365 What does everyone think? It's 32mm so it'll be clear and easy to read. My mother loves opal and pearl, so she'll definitely like the dial. It's waterproof and stainless steel so she can wash it a billion times and it'll be fine. -
Alright, I love the "name that watch" game. I've played it many times and it always proves entertaining and educational, so I figure it's my turn. Today we're playing with two watches. Both Rolex Submariners. Be very careful, while one may seem obvious, the other is not. That's all I'm going to say. On to the game! And for the record, I purposefully left out pictures of the coronet on the outside of the clasps. I provided shots of the inside and the side views of the clasps in substitution because I personally think that knowing what those look like is a better means of identifying clasps and bracelets. (I can't make it too easy ) First, a side by side comparison: Watch #1 And now, on to watch #2 Oh, and I'm glad this project finally gave me an excuse to use my Rolex brand cotton gloves So, let the guessing begin. I'm anxious to hear what everyone thinks they see...

I was all about the Hamilton until I read about the mineral crystal. Cheap @sses. I think I'm going to go for Swiss Army. My mom despises digital watches, or else the G-shock would be the clear winner. -

I'm trying to picture my mom wearing a g shock! Hahaha -
Glad you're back, buddy. It's been too quiet around here without you stirring things up!

Oh, wait... maybe it is mineral. Why would they use a mineral crystal on a "field" watch???? -

It's saphire! Amazon's stupid. I like the khaki strap, too, BUT it's leather-backed and she said the straps stink after a while for as often as she gets them wet. -

Yeah, so far I like the Hamilton the best. I feel like 33mm is a good size for a woman without being too big or too small. -

I do like that, but 40mm? Does your wife not think it's a little too big? My mom actually bought a men's Schwinn as a teenager b/c she liked it better. Definitely a consideration. I also found this: http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Womens-H68311133-Khaki-Black/dp/B000A10Y0U -
So, my mother is a nurse. She buys cheap, crappy watches that get ruined/break/water-logged on a regular basis. I want to buy her a good, durable water-proof watch for Christmas. Mind you, I'm not looking to buy her anything too expensive as her watches take a beating in her day-to-day (I actually thought about buying her a birth year Rolex and remembered who I was buying for and laughed at myself). I'm thinking it should have good lume, military time on the dial, a bracelet or maybe a waterproof strap, (she says most "leather" straps she's had fall apart b/c of her washing her hands frequently, but I'm sure the watches she buys don't have real leather straps) and probably a quartz movement, but I'm not apposed to mechanical either. I'm looking at this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hamilton-Khaki-Field-Womens-Watch-H68311433-/150646879657?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item231340f5a9 Any input or better ideas? Thanks! --Jer

I checked out that way, too. I received my watch yesterday. What did you buy for $661 American dollars? -
that's what I was looking for, db2 (and everyone else). Call it a gut-feeling. I thought it may be too good to be true and it certainly was. --Jer

Ok, Found missing link Tudor WTF is this?

Where did that case come from!?!?! There's dips around what, at some point, may have been a bezel. Good lord. I want to buy it to put it out of its misery. -
HOLY [censored]! I saw that on VRF and thought it was kind of cool. Good catch, my friend...

Gen makers bidding up value of own watches?
tabularasa415 replied to mbjoer's topic in General Discussion
I dunno, but after reading this article I feel as though if I were 30 years older and developed the same passion for watches at the same age I did now, my collection would be full of a lot more gens because they would have been soooo much cheaper (before these clowns figured out how to blow up prices)! -
LOL... you and I both ;-)

II. Defining 'Noob' Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbs are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage. n00bs, on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more. They expect people to do the work for them and then expect to get praised about it, and make up a unique species of their own.

Some of these "great sellers" version of a "service" is equivalent to used car dealers pouring sand in oil intakes.

I don't know. It definitely looks fake to me. I feel really bad you got taken. Why don't you come to my place, we'll have a scotch, and I'll take that piece of junk off of your hands and I'll let you take one of my gen datejusts... I know, I know... I'm a good guy
-
That's what threw me off, too, but like you said... everything else looks too good to be fake (or too good to be true?) LOL Maybe that's why the price isn't too crazy yet Maybe I'll just have to keep a close eye on it... The rest of you bastards stay away

Anyone want to chime in as to whether or not this is the genuine article? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Omega-Seamaster-300-Automatic-/160664428893?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item256858a15d
