  1. man i am a bit confused i stumbled upon a 5513 on the bay the crystal certainly dosn't look like a T19 ! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROLEX-SUBMARINER-551...VQQcmdZViewItem
  2. Having studied art history and coming from a rather Platonic renaissance ( sp?) Catholic up bringing Vitruvius was major player in my education. Da Vinci's Vitruvian man in particular being a siginificant in the concept of man being the measure of all things... Vitruvian besides being a great historian/ documentarian was also an exceptional engineer ... etc etc
  3. for what it is worth ... i am flying to Ny on the 11th but i am off again to Vegas on the 12th and will be back on the 17th .....
  4. Yes Stonehenge is most probably some sort of time measuring device ... but i am always very skeptical of theories surrounding stonehenge ... it is also probable that it is just a whopping large pile of rocks (i don't mean to offend anybody)... my ex was big into into wicca and wholistic things -and i found it all incredibly dubious and just a little bit to crunchy for my liking . But its cool gunner that you have a Vetruvian reffrence on your first post... i was discussing with a mate of mine who thinks Mechanical watches / clocks are really superfulous status symbols... but I tend to think that they are much more than that ... mechanical watches or watch making really has such a rich tradition and is really an artform in its self... thats one of the main reasons i don't own anything quartz anymore... possibly all very irrelevant but i thought i would add since i have really enjoyed this thread !
  5. Oh man how did i miss this thread ... unfortunately i am going to be in Vegas that weekend... would i have loved to have come.
  6. i don't know if this on topic or not ... but i believe one of the earlies horological instruments was a essentially a clay bucket with a hole near the base ... not entirely sure how it was calibrated but there would be markings on the interior so that time could be told by the corresponding water line... and an interesting thing about the gong reffrence b1682 made i saw a program on the tele a little bit ago where they had one of these water clocks in a temple in India(?) and i believe when the bucket emptied it self some one hit a gong and refilled it or somthing like that . --- they're called datum pots i just looked it up---
  7. So is this being built to similar specs as the 'super' reps that have been comming out recently? (ie: a gen has been bought an is being copied) the more i look at this the more i want one!!!
  8. Sorry but is this out yet? I am going to be all over this when it is.
  9. sorry i don't want to hijack this thread... but don't 111 's have sandwich dials through out all the series/ years
  10. i saw a a Tahitian black MOP dial Yachie (gen) in yellow gold about a couple years ago in Prauge out of all places ... most definately out of my budget but it was one of the few gold sports watches that was love at first sight for me ... and i think YMs are silly... it was really somthing special.. then again i think black mop is v. special anyway ..
  11. Excellent!! all i really want now is a black MOP yachtie and i will a happy camper
  12. not completely true ... the dealers buy the watches at list and then mark up to retail ... so there is a margin there from which you can negotiate ... i have never bought a brand new gen Rollie from a dealer for asking/ sticker price...
  13. ....'tooth brush' ... flipping 'ek what ever happend to a quick rinse with soap and water and pat down with a towel - just as Rolex suggests as a matter of fact- ... (i wouldn't recomend that for leather strapped jobbies - you'd damage the strap)
  14. sorry for being going off topic but here is a gen 16520 with a custom skeleton back ... it would be cool if this was Rolex option... i too am looking foward to the end results with the 1570 ... keep us posted ...
  15. impressive! somthing about having rlx replacement parts in the parts box... it gives me the warm and fuzzys...

    Sub/Mil 5517

yup i have got the dail and insert from the same guy ... the dial is dissapointing ... insert is good tho... just need to replace the pearl...
  17. i suppose you can black wash it (with matt black paint) ... thin down the paint slightly ... depending what you use ... i tend to use tamiya acrylic with a little bit of water and cover the entire surface area ( in this case just the bezel) let it sit for a lil while ( just enough so that it isn't completely dry ) and remove the excess paint with a dry cloth so that only the paint in the recesed area reimains ... thats how i would do it ...
  18. yeah but it's still quite difficult to capture the etching on the crystal with a camera ...
  19. NOT SATISFIED ... i found my watch ( in a box filled with foriegn coins) ... I am wearing it but i wonder how long that will last I have learned ... it isn't adventadsious to type anything that will be 'public' when you are under the influence... in my case as i am typing whilst drunk... however type away shall i... ... If imitation is the highest form of flatterly then the rep 1165xx is by no means lending its muse any credit ... call me old fashioned ( i predominantly collect old beaters from the early 20th century) but i like my watches to work and be dependible even if they are older my father or my Gramnps for that matter... but i have also come to expect less from reps ... ( i was brought up on canal street specials) ... but this is why the daytonas can be misleadng thier dials are exeptional.. build quality great... but the movment is rubbish ... i hate the fact that such a great looking piece conks out in the early mornings on me ... highly unreliable .... as many of my late night flings have been for that matter ... My favourite moments with this watch have been the following: 1)Having a "Watch off " with 'City' worker ( those who work in London's fianancial district) on the tube. he was a wearing a Ti Breitling ( most likely gen) and he stood down when i flashed him my cuff ... 2) being repsected in Harvey Nicks when I had them searching for 1 hr and a half for a 15 GPB set of studs simply becuase i was wearing a flashy watch... that only really yells I have [censored] load of money... ( a dunhill stud set isn't isn't disposable stud set) 3) and also timing 1/4 mile runs in a Lambo Guillardo registered in dubai .. the watch felt like it belonged ... The times that i have loatheed it ... 1) when it didn't keep time ...PERIOD... 2) the case dimensions are really off ... its dissapointing .. incredously too thick 3) how much it cost .... the endline... you really want one ... save your money ... if you really need one... save your money buy one used ( gen) ... it will only set you back 4k ( GPB) at the best and it will be a piece to pass down from generation to generation if not go down the UBI route and build a zenith franken... (i would if i could) I wish you all better luck with your rep 1165xx's than i have had... Ragsy ps. sorry for the spelling/ gramatical errors i am quite tanked ...
  20. as much as many disagree with me but i believe the PAM craze has been and gone... the oversize watch market has been super-saturated ... in so far as PAM with thier oversized novelty are not as unique as they once were... Panerai is probably trying to address the desires y demand of thier core and dependable market (hardcore -gen- watch collectors)with coming out with in house movements and complications ... seriously what is the point of just owning another ETA powered watch - at the end of the day there is nothing special about that.... in comparsion to turbillions and the like In the same respect that doesn't make them bad watches for collectors or enthusiast alike... i would still own one even if it wasn't "trendy" simply because i like thier design... so YAY foe OP for developing thier own movment every "proper " prestige Marque does { have in house movments} ... i think this is a good thing esp for brand that has such a following
  21. these were featured in QP a little while ago under in an article entitled 'Bonati's Brain Box' the prototype was Radiomir cased ... i have to say i like the linear PR and the GMT functions .... they don't look cheap to me- perhaps it maybe too cluttered but i think it works out fine ... unlike the Rollie YM II which looks like a toy... I will be happy boy when they figure out how to rep these ...
  22. guys congratulation on your purchases... in many respects it is great watch... after two weeks it started to stop and start on me but after manual winding it and keeping off my wrist ( as advised by the dealer/ collector from whence it came ) it was running for without a hitch for a couple days give or take... unfortunately as soon as i got it back on my wrist it went missing in action... so i wish i could contribute more but without it i can't ... i really miss the watch... at this point in time i am trying to justify getting another ... i have a lot of other financial obligations to attend to and every penny counts... but we'll see ...i feel that if i pull the trigger on a new one the other one will miraculously show up...
