  1. Well I am sitting here looking at my tracking number for some watches and last order sat in customs for about 2 days and came with a nice $75 tax slapped on them...

This order got into customs at 10AM today and didn't clear by day end... now I know the best thing to do is to not look at tracking as it doesn't change anything, but I can't help it :p

My feeling is the faster they get out of customs, the better chance no one got their grubby mitts on them. If they sit there for too long I get the feeling it's becuase someone is doing something with them that holds them up (I know it's not always this way, but right now I have nothing better to do than speculate).

So I am wondering, I hear lots of stories of people who's watches regularly clear customs in under 1 or 2 hours... so how would you say is average for your watches to clear customs (assuming nothing goes wrong like getting taxed or seized ie how long do you think is long enough to say "hmmm....")?

For the record mine come thorugh SF customs.

  2. I found one at Otto Frei for 270 US dollars with a Hamilton name on the rotor. This is ok for me since the back case is anyway covered. One thing that I have to ask also. It is easy to take away the day and just use the date? The Navitimer that I have is just using the date.

You might be able to move your rotor to the new movement if it has breitling on it or something...

  3. Hmmm, that one is less aesthetically pleasing but I like the screw method rather than direct pressure method for some reason...

I am intersted in how it works as I would like an inexpensive crystal press, especially considering the possility of AR coating comming up...

  4. I say to each their own... if that's how you buy happiness... well we don't agree on it but that's your life.

Most of the time I wear a jacket or long sleeve shirt (I prefer my shirts a little oversized) so my wrists are not visible, only if you catch me checking the time or ask directly will you see my watch, and if I am checking the time you see only the 12 oclock side of the band, pretty much not even the face...

Also the way I dress and make myself out, no one would think for a second I have an expensive watch. So it does the only thing that's really important to me... makes me happy when I see it... occasionally makes a good conversation piece when someone does notice though :)

  5. I am sorry but I have less knowledge on the subject than you, but was wondering why you changed the beat lever (do you have one of those fancy machines to tell you how accurate the beat is) and how you can see what inside is turning with the caseback screwed on?

I am not doubting anything you say, just trying to follow along...

Also did you try to put everything back exactly where it was when you started to see if that helps?

  6. I messaged the seller informining him it was a fake and pointing out some of the (numerous) tells... I got this response:

thanks for the heads up, i removed the auction

and indeed the auction is pulled... I guess it's possible he really didn't know...

  7. No one gets the chance... if anyone ever asks I am never long to tell them it's a rep...

With the exception of a "friend" of mine who seems to think that it's hilarious to go telling people I have a fake rolex before I have a chance to and pretty much making me out to be some pathetic guy who tries to pull off fakes...

  8. Here's the other thing... I think of the 90% we save on the price of a gen, a good 70% of that is overhead:

Profit, advetising, legal fees, R&D etc

I honestly believe the watches you buy at the ADs actually cost about 20-30% of their retail price to make.

Now take out the factors the real companies have to deal with (like actually paying employees decent wages, legal fees, health benefits, advertising, R&D etc etc) which are things the rep community doesn't have to deal with, factor in that the bulk factor is not nearly as big a player in this market as in the legit market (because the bulk is already taken care of by the legit businesses, most of the parts in our reps are probably the third shift stuff, the things the factories crank out while they should be closed and sell out the back door for cheap) and the fact that we use cheaper versions of the movements than gens in many cases and I think it's not at all unreasonable to think that $200-800 would get you pretty much a 1:1 copy of what the gens have...

And I am talking 1:1 in everything but the movement... not just the 95% we have now...

  9. I don't think value or cost of the gen has anything to do with what is reasonable to ask for in a rep...

For instance the argument that the rep costs 10% of what a gen does but is 95% accurate doesn't make any difference to me...

What does make a difference is how hard that extra step is to make.

For instance getting real meteorite for a rep dial is not something I consider reasonable to aske for.

Changing font spacing or size is.

Why? Because of the level of control one has to have over the detail vs how much level of control they have demostrated already having/what is reasonable to expect someone to be in control of.

Things that I know they can do are things consider reasonable to ask:

Spacing font properly, making lines proper thinckness and color, putting AR on a crystal and lume quality

These things can be done. I know either from basic understanding of how the machinery used to accomplish these things works, or from imperical evidence:

I know a printing machine that makes dials can be programed to print to a very precise tolerance.

I know that when you design the lines or pictures on a dial, you have full control to a very high level of what the result is.

I know that there are machines out there that can, for a reasonable price, add AR coating to the crystals already in use.

I know superlume is available and can be applied to the situations in which it's desired.

These things are all possible and the fact that they can produce what they can tells me that there is little or not reason that they could not produce what I want.

Stating that a rep only costs 10% of a gen is not a reason problems should not be fixed. It's like "becuase there is no law against it" is not a legitimate answer to the question "why are you balancing a chicken on your head?".
