  1. Mine's really a composite of a reproduction 79190 dial in a rep 5513 case, not a pure 79190, but as the dial and movement were gifted by other members, it has a lot of sentimental value for me and I'd never part with it I won't be going with the fixed lug bars as my Tudor Snowflake project is a fixed lug bars, and I only want the one NATO in my collection (I don't like how they feel once they get wet) but I always keep the 79190 on a Tropic-style strap as a hot weather watch To keep the exclusivity for you, I'll put a blue insert in mine (I've been considering going with a black/blue combo for a while but was undecided which watch to modify ) Likewise, while I have a lot of respect for the purists projects, and am even planning on making my 16610 to 16800 conversion project as accurate as possible, my true passion is with customization
  2. PS Having finally got the pics to load on my iPhone, I'm going to do that setup with my own 79190, because it looks awesome, and the angles of the sword hands perfctly complement the triangular markers Indeed, had Tudor released a MilSpec 79190, like Rolex did with the 5517, that is exactly what it would have looked like. It may be a fantasy build, but personally speaking, I'd consider it an accurate 'prequel' and a perfect 'what if...'
  3. I would say that that would be the icing on the cake, but for me, a watch never 'felt like it was mine' till it had received it's first ding I'll be sure to post pics when it's done To quote a line from GTA4, because that's Player Style! Why do people modify or customize cars? Why did Jack the Ripper cut up all those women? For the lols... When I have £10M spare, I plan on buying the MV Brigitte Bardot and having it converted into a luxury yacht for exactly the same reason
  4. Thanks, I would post some photos of it, but I'm experiencing camera/phone/pc issues at the moment, but I will put some up at some point in the future I feel exactly the same way about Tudors, all the style and aesthetic of a Rolex, but without The R Word on the dial, so they never draw a second (or even first) glance and fly totally under the radar I have a custom Rolex project of my own planned based on the 6542, but involving a monochromatic bezel insert and a 1016-style dial and a 1675 large GMT hand I guess that's your call on the lug bars, I just figure as you've got the replacement parts anyway, you might as well go the whole nine yards with your plan
  5. While I am coming to appreciate some 'stock' items, I've always prefered custom. The other day, I had to refinish a Sony iPod docking speaker wifey liked up in a yardsale for £1.50 (minus power lead and remote) It works fine, but had obviously taken a bit of abuse as the lacquer finish on a few of the corners had been chipped. I used modeling putty to rebuild the lines of the case, and then planned to recreate the look with black Plastikote and a clear coat. After wetsanding the black paint to prep it for the clear coat, I really liked the matte finish (which by coincidence, blends nicely with the plastic foot/contol panal) so I decided to keep it matte, and then wrapped a 2-3 inch wide strip of mahogany-effect vinyl around it so it would blend better with older furniture. Now I admit, it may not be to everyone's taste, but I like it (wifey and inlaws were suitably impressed too) so I always say if you want to go custom, go custom As for the lugs, I've got to respectfully disagree with my compadres... If the watch is going to be worn on NATO and be subjected to the abuses of active daily wear, fixed lug bars will keep the watch on the strap way better than sprung bars would. Sure, I know that with a NATO both spring bars have to fail before you lose the watch, but with fixed bars, that's just not going to happen at all
  6. Do it. It's your watch, have it the way you want it. Gen/rep, doesn't mean shit, it's just a watch. No different to modifying a car: It's not to everyone's taste, but everyone's taste isn't what matters in the custom world, it's your taste that matters
  7. I was just meaning the Heritage as an out of the box rep Way too much hassle to try sourcing parts for a build, but for what they are, they're great watches
  8. No. The variance in font (as minor as it is) isn't worth spending that kind of money on... To the average joe viewing public, they wouldn't notice... To someone who actually knows the difference, a gen collector would just say "It's a fake trying to be real..." Only a rep collector would appreciate the difference, but likely not care Better things to spend your dollar on, amigo
  9. That name actually rings a bell for me, but I can't quite place it... :g:
  10. Interesting perspective, but I see what you mean: Reproduction rather than simply replication That said, once I found out what the gens actually cost to manufacture, and the outsourced parts, I started viewing those companies as the crooks
  11. In my experience, people either don't notice what I'm wearing, or simply keep their thoughts to themselves and don't pass judgement, so while in the minds of many, Rolex = Fake, chances are it's never going to be an issue, so just buy the watches you like As a friend said to me a while back (on another issue entirely) "don't let the tail wag the dog...", and absolutely so, you wear the watch, don't let it wear you As for the type I buy as per the topic title, I just buy the watches I like and wear them, afterall, they're just watches
  12. There's also the blue Snowflake with a date, I just suggested the Heritage ad you already have several Subs, so thought it would give a new option to the collection Another blue Sub option, is the Japanese market release blue 16610, which is also a really nice piece
  13. If I were you, I'd be more worried about the cellphone in your pocket microwaving your balls than the watch on your wrist...
  14. Let them think what they like I'm reminded of something someone wrote a while back about iPads: People who want them are wannabes, people who have them are assholes... As above, just wear what you like and enjoy it
  15. Looking good, nice work indeed If you're going for the 12, how about a Tudor Heritage chrono?
  16. At the moment, I couldn't afford a £10 quartz POS... I wouldn't buy/wear some of the higher end watches like PPs etc, not because of the perscieved value, but simply because I don't like the aesthetics of them I'm not really bothered if someone thinks a watch might be a rep, so I just wear what I like and enjoy
  17. I think the loss of people's respect for throwing his toys out of the pram like that is going to be a heavy enough cross to bear... Totally agree with your comments though
  18. Has Iceberg shown himself up? Yes Does that warrant a ban? No As Lanikai once pointed out, we're all brothers here: Sometimes brothers fight...
  19. Happy to be of help Sounds like a good plan, afterall, no need to glue the insert if it snaps securely into place
  20. No worries Lume (on mine) is okay (but nothing special) but it depends how important it is to you for it to really glow as to if you want it relumed or not As for the insert swap, just a simple matter of popping out the original (depending on if you want to keep the original insert looking nice, depends on how gently you remove it ) and then sticking in the replacement Some of them have double-sided tape on the back to hold them in place, some folks use a varity of epoxies and glues to hold the inserts in place, it's pretty much a matter of personal preference
  21. It has a Maxi dial and hands: The 16610 should not have those, and the caseback looks a bit off, although I can't put my finger on what... The gen 16610 does not have AR of any kind, so it's not a necessary addition. I have a similar watch (different source and different caseback) and to be honest, it's a fantastic beater I'm planning on converting mine into a 16800, but the simplest mod to make the above watch accurate, is to swap the bezel insert for a green one, then it would be accurate for the LV 50th aniversary edition
  22. Customs is backlogged with the quest to track down replica Olympic Merch, so not only delays are highly likely, but confiscations will probably be on the rise too for a while
  23. I know the Olympics have been putting strain on the mail system, could it just be an administrative error?
