  1. can't wait to see the casework. I think you have some good ideas for straps, in the meantime you may want to look at a ZRC, if you need something economical to use while waiting for a custom commissioned strap to be finished. They had a huge selection of these at a watch stand in my local mall, so you may want to check yours. Some were inexpensive, some got pricey! Lots of 18mm varietal. http://www.zrcbracelet.com/uk/index.php I have a similar project on my hands. My grandfathers vintage Seamaster. They loved their stretchy metal bands didn't they? I retired that in favor of, you guessed it- a ZRC strap. I've done some case work, the movement works fine, but I would of course like it to be serviced. Its been on the to-do list for a while like your project. Here it is. The strap is very nice for the cost.
  2. yep. Thats an easy fix. Cape cod will do it, you'll notice some fine swirl/haze afterwards, but overall its a good product. For real serious luster, a bench grinder with polishing wheels like highhoey said, or I use a good high speed dremel with polishing wheels and stainless polishing compound.
  3. I said that because I thought yours was gen! Either way i'm still jealous, it's superb. Maybe Chuan nailed it with the 1st post. An IWC. mmmm.
  4. Always liked that VC, and.. I would love that Tudor, but it would just have to be gen.
  5. very happy for you! Its new, but its classic at the same time. Imagine that other guys car ride, full of emotions on the way to the AD, and on the way home. Poor bastard. Can't feel too sorry for a guy that was about to buy a new sub though. This one was meant to be for you, Craig.
  6. Well, here's the watchbox as it stands, 08/2010. It's seen a lot of evolution over the past 3 years, learning what I like and don't like. I've learned that I prefer bracelets. Stainless cases with no coatings to scratch or wear off. Pieces that can withstand the test of time. From top left: 7750 Carrera TAG Link quartz Vintage Seamaster De Ville Turler Electric Blue Seamaster 42mm PO UN MMC SS ETA Sub PAM 127, Savage strap Skyland V3 Swissfish, back when it was 1st released w/ Nickle plated swiss ETA Honorable mentions, located in my spare watchbox: The PloFRRRF! Casio MDV102 (recently switched to a solid black Maratac Nato) So, where do I go from here? Whats missing? Here's some that have come and gone over the years...
  7. They need to increase the case size of the speedmaster. A 43mm option, like the new Carrera. I would have to have it.
  8. I wish there was, i'd prefer a Marina version rather than the submersible, but that is the nicest sub I've seen.
  9. protect the screws from becoming projectiles (say, laying a piece of tape over the area) then use a proper tool to pop the plaque off. If they aren't threaded into anything, thats a sign they are bound to fall out and get lost soon anyhow, which makes this mod an even better idea for you my friend. Sorry for the 5 month late reply!
  10. Ah, the FL saltwater camel. Bush Gardens needs to add those to the petting zoo immediately. KB, do it. But they have to be your pics if your going to! Theres been more critters, but i've been dodging and weaving rather than making photo ops out of them. Maybe another installment soon.
  11. I don't know, after that 10am brunch and walking the doggie at 11am... That watch would have me worn out by noon(er).
  12. heh.. how hard can it be to accumulate 16K posts on a forum where 9/10ths of the new threads are about congratulating (then circle jerking each other) with each "my new SS Sub." thread. Does this make me a hypocrite? [cough]Who has the best sub.[/cough] Oh wait, we know actual informative [censored] about watches here! But just in case, maybe I'll make a poll. However, over here, we seem to be more of a T/A kind've bunch, eh? Forget the poll, there's enough of those on TRF. How about I just post this instead-
  13. It is no fun sending watches back to China. I avoid that at all costs. I feel your pain.
  14. +1. I've really been looking forward to seeing this review inevitably pop up after hearing you took the plunge. Until this, there was maybe ONE good picture of this rep in the wild, and it was on leather. Breitling dev's on acid, eh? That certainly sums up the B01 to a degree. Well then. Hopefully no fungi were harmed in the making of this great review. Oh, and.. I like it!
  15. They're pretty good. The display back will give it away if anyone looks at the movement, but you could probably get a closed case back off another UN. The CG's aren't exactly like gen. It's a great watch, beautiful, big, and tons of wrist presence.
  16. Old school weekend, at least Saturday so far...
  17. I've had this rep for probably 10 years, and recently I got the urge to look into its accuracy and give it an overhaul. Needing a battery change on the quartz Miyota movement only once, it is an excellent timekeeper. As I look back at some of the gen Tag's from this era, this rep is actually pretty spot on. The quality that we are used to with modern day watches, wasn't always seen in some models 10+ years ago, be it rep or gen. The tooling, engraving, technology, etc. was just not the same as it is now. That being said, this thing is pretty nice. It is very close to an equivalent gen of its day. The quality is good, too. Solid SS. Screw down caseback. A nice comfortable wear. I gave the case and bracelet an overhaul and I went from this: To this: This (the one on the right): To this: There you have it. A nice mid-school TAG Heuer Link rep, back in rotation!
  18. Definitely. Here's My UN. some bracelets come with the center block made of steel, others titanium like gen. Gotta watch out for that. So far on this i've got the ti bracelet block, i've polished the H portion of the deployant, removed the rose gold sticker from the rotor and the gold from the number plaque on the side of the case.
  19. Really? FS: Blue original run swissfish, gen nickle ETA- $1,000
  20. The cheese in the pic doesnt do it for me, but boy... The Penfold's. Yah, the Penfolds. I can't believe you didn't save me a glass. It's my favorite. Agreed. Sounds nice. I'm trying to switch to wine, if anything at all. I've got to slow down a bit. Italian/Irish blood though, not so easy...
  21. I've heard more and more horror stories about home invasions lately. Now today, a neighbors house was robbed in the middle of the night. We live in a nice area, picture typical suburbia. I am a gun owner, and feel my wife and myself are well protected between me, the .45, and the dog. The problem is, how do I protect my belongings when I am not home? What if there were a fire, flood, etc? I can't stomach the idea of taking a complete loss in the watchbox department. With pictures of everything, How would you suppose one should handle insuring our kind've hobby when talking with an agent regarding home owners? Please discuss...
