Hehe, nice report. I am sure most watchmakers will refuse to work on Asian movements. I wonder what they'd think about The Zigmeister's 4 year stress test results of the A7750.
BTW, how old was this guy and did his shop have a lot of pre-war tools in it? I don't make it up to the city often (if I can help it), but would love to see the shop sometime. Descriptions of it that I've read made it sound like something of a museum.
PS Supposedly there's also a place in San Mateo or Belmont or somewhere around there on the other side of 92 from you called Precision Time-Tech. They are supposed to be good too and they have been mentioned on a few of the fora in the past.
By and large, liberal elitists such as many of those now occupying the highest positions in our Federal government, believe that paying taxes is only for the little people.
Francisco, thanks again for the greatly informative post. With all the 7750 information floating around lately, I'm about ready to tear one of mine down!
Robbie, that UN definitely appears to be using the same coating based on those pics. That's the first gen I've seen with it. I never really understood why they don't all use it. It's better, and in large quantities the cost increment would be minimal.
Well it depends on usage. There are very strict US Mil specs for durability that the coating I use meets. According to the specification it should show zero wear after something like 100 strokes with a pumice eraser. And since we don't rub our AR with a rubber pumice eraser, but only soft cloths, it's safe to say it won't wear. Mine never has. The only thing that happens to mine are small scratches after klutsy maneuvers like accidentally whacking my 3717 into the corner of a metal door frame! And even then the scratch is small and barely noticeable.
This was built around a "roling" 16200... The guy claimed the crystal was gen, but it was not. Nevertheless $150 or so for gen case, tube and bezel aint bad... Picked up a crystal elsewhere.
Well I must say that the AP ROO gen is probably my grail watch... certainly on my short list. And yet I still remember the first time I handled a gen and how disappointed I was by the lack of AR. For me it just cheapens the character of an otherwise amazing timepiece.
If this "plan" gets implemented, I'll gladly divert an extra $10K in to a qualified 401(k), immediately withdraw it, and save myself the marginal rate on that $10K chunk of income.
As will many others.
Oops, nevermind. Misread the "plan". Wishful thinking.
Great story about a dying breed. Supposedly there is someone very similar not too far from me. He's originally from Europe, where he learned his trade, and has been doing it all his life. A couple years ago I had heard that he was on the verge of retirement and have been meaning to go in just to see the shop. But I haven't gotten around to it. I really should.
