  1. Great discussion...and great info from Ubi and BT of course. Now, if anyone can provide info on what replacement movements would work in either the Explorer II, GMT II, GMT, GMTIIc, etc...essentially anything GMT related...that would be interesting. I'm still afraid to jump on the GMT band wagon without either having somebody willing to work on a modded movement with the 4th hand...or a better quality replacement.
  2. I have to admit, I like the non chrono ROOs more than the chrono ones...and they should be easier to make more accurate without the movement issues.
  3. You do realize BT...with all your fine promotion of the panda Discovery...it's going to take awhile before anybody gets anything but the one you took pics of.
  4. Never been charged anything. If the item coming over has a declared value of $5000 you will obviously be charged duties and taxes and brokerage fee...but no dealer should be stupid enough to do that.
  5. I keep flopping...Skyland...1911...Skyland...1911... Man...it's annoying. I'll probably get both...
  6. Welcome...and here's the place to get your cross check.
  7. I'll trust Andy on this. I was thrown by the red wheel...so at least you know...it's worth the $12 for the movement.
  8. The movement issues are true...a quartz will be lower maintenance and more reliable...but lacks that "something"that comes with a mechanical movement. Be careful with the specific watch though, as the dealers usually say "same"or "similar" to the high end rep, and if you look closely will often find they are not close at all...subdial spacing, hands, crystal, etc...don't trust what the dealer says, do a close comparison yourself.
  9. Real...for sure...real cheap!! That movement cracks me up. At least they "tried"to put in the red wheel. The movement isn't even worth the top dollar ($12) of a better quality DG2813. Don't buy it...it's junk.
  10. Nice!! I like that bracelet. I remember back in the day wanting to upgrade the old folded link bracelets with solid links as the new bracelets better denoted quality...now people pay top dollar for things like folded oysters and the like.
  11. That's freaky...I couldn't read those lyrics...I had to sing them while bopping in my seat...yikes.
  12. The other option is to go through your phone book...call and see...or go through a shopping mall that might have a repair shop. Chat to the people...and see if they would be willing or have experience working with reps. I've found a few in Toronto for quick fixes.
  13. Exciting. That Graham is a big piece that's for sure. I was impressed by them at the AD...but definitely could not pull off wearing one. Enjoy it!
  14. BTW...you already posted your question in the Rolex area...don't double post...read...search...read some more...and you'll find some answers to your questions. You'll find out all sorts of stuff about dealers and Swiss ratings..
  15. I use the tach functions on my Speedy and Daytona, compensating for a smaller measured distance to find out if my 1 year old is getting faster walking across the kitchen.
  16. Exactly. I like watches for the design and aesthetic and not for a status symbol or oneupmanship. And for reasons like Noel has stated, I wear my reps more than my gens as I'm not concerned about what happens to them.
  17. I'm not so hot on movement dimension and jigging like you fine watchmakers, but I'll see what I can source. It is an interesting dilemma. There are a few movements that would be nice to be able to buy spares of...an Asian GMT that would fit the re cases being one...and a an automatic jump movement to fit the Muller, Genta and other cases as well! Thanks for the info Freddy...that already provides more information than I had.
  18. That is a great looking piece. Lucky Lani...and great work Rob.
  19. Many people upgrade the movement to a real valjoux 7750...making essentially, a rep that's really close to the gen inside and out. The hands on a the 21k movement are the same size as the ETA...whereas the 28k movement needs a coupl hands swapped to the right size.
  20. ...and there you have it! That's a pretty good summary...from a very seasoned user. Good advice. The Super Avenger is up there too...but massive. Bear in mind...there are good dealers on the net...and bad ones. The good dealers on this board are not without their problems...maybe it's language barriers, maybe it's 48 hr email response times...maybe it's price or other reasons. So...if questioning where to buy...read the dealer reviews...and good luck!
  21. Out of curiousity Freddy...are there any viable movement options out there to sub in for modified Asian GMT movements? A Rolex 1575 would be great...but generally not viable...I don't know if it would even fit in that case. Would an ETA 2893-2 fit in the rep cases (for things like the GMT IIc, Pam GMTs, regular GMT II's...etc)? Does anybody supply spare Asian GMT movements for the reps?? Thanks for any info. I haven't really seen this discussed outside of people modding with high end, rare movements...not really viable for me.
