  1. Aloha y'all- hope you're having as nice a weekend as mine.

Yesterday I visited an antique dealer that specializes in re-furbished vintage wrist and pocket watches, called Father Time Antiques in Chicago.

They had some very nice timepieces, a few bubbleback Roliies that were quite expensive, but after trying a few on, I was absolutely struck by how small they are compared to what I'm used to wearing. I tried on a mens rectangular Elgin and it looked like a child's watch on my wrist.

I used to go in there, and, although I've never bought, I had considered buying a few of their timepieces. But now I don't think I could wear a watch that small.

Any of you tried on a vintage timepiece and been struck by its size?

  2. Superb review, V!

I too enjoy nice writing instruments.

The most dcent rep pens I've gotten from Narikaa & TTK, but the black lacquer (paint?) starts to come off almost immediately, anywhere there are screw threads on the pen, dead giveaway I'm afraid. Worst rep pen I got was from WBK (RWI) many imperfections and large flakes of black paint came off the pen, ick.

I have 2 pen cases from Narikaa which, after polishing up with leather conditioner, look terrific.

  3. Vic, a sisterly word of advice, let the cheap genes rule when shopping for a rep designer hand bag, OK?

But when it comes to watches, as you already know, even in the best of circumstances, s**t happens, and when it happens it's really good to know that your dealer will come through for you.

With Paul it really isn't worth the aggro and apres purchase teeth gnashing.

  4. The SMP chrono is truly sharp - don't flame me but I think the standard SMP is kind if boring.

I love chronographs and I think the chrono details on this SMP give it the extra "oomph" to make it a very interesting watch.

Also, I see a lot of the reg SMPs around town but I've never seen the chrono version.

Hmm, I may have to talk to Andrew about this.

  5. JF, you make a very good point - a few days ago I was in Tourneau trying on a beautiful SS DateJust with dark blue dial and it had such a nice presence on the wrist, I couldn't figure out why it looked so much better than my crappy rep. Now I know why, I'm positive the gen is bigger.

  6. You guys, been there done that yawn.

I don't even know how I found out about these but I've got 2 of these micro helis, in the US they are sold under Air Hogs Havoc Heli name.

They are amazing fun, but both of mine didn't fly well out of the box. I've had to add some Blu Tac on the heli's nose to get some controllable forward motion. They're not so easy to control, but I'm still amazed that a $30 heli can fly at all.

If you want to observe some uber geeky conversation regards modding these toys ( just like here!) go to rcgroups.com, look under Micro RTF sub forum. Really fascinating, and makes you want to go out and buy more advanced helis.

  7. Kind of a moot point, I think.

I've belonged to the rep forums going on 4 years now and have never read any deragatory comments towards minorities. I can't imagine the environment here isn't welcoming, but what do I know?

Besides, just because one doesn't see wrist shots doesn't mean we don't have a much more diverse membership than we think. A lot of members are lurkers and choose to stay in the background.
