sneed12 Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 I bought this watch from another member (although I have not received it yet) http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac26/PrDubis/SDC10036.jpg http://www.rwgforum.com/topic/109869-awesome-electric-blue-rolex-submariner-swiss-eta/page__p__770543__hl__blue%20submariner__fromsearch__1&#entry770543 I was then pretty new to the Rolex thing, I've been a Seiko collector and I'm just now learning about the Rolex lineup. From what I can tell, Rolex only (from the factory at least) makes blue Submariners in the two-tone. Is that right?
ubiquitous Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 16613 only... Or, the next best thing would be a vintage SS Tudor Submariner...
By-Tor Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Actually they produce the white gold blue Sub (ref. 116619) too. Easily forgettable watch though (imho). I'm a huge fan of blue dials but I wonder how they ever managed to make a blue dial that boring. The old 16613 blue dial is amazing, this watch has very disappointing color.
sneed12 Posted March 1, 2010 Author Report Posted March 1, 2010 Bite your tongue! I have one of those, I just sent it off to Vac for re-lume... I must admit it took a while for the smurf dial to grow on me. I almost sold it a couple of times. Seriously though, how did Rolex never make a watch with the 16613 dial in a SS case? Blue with stainless steel is the second most classic color combination after black...
highoeyazmuhudee Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 wasnt the blue 16610 a limited edition released in Asia only model? "summer blue sub" or something to that effect

I forgot about that one... But then again, I also don't really consider that to be a traditional Submariner
By-Tor Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 I forgot about that one... But then again, I also don't really consider that to be a traditional Submariner Couldn't agree more. I'm already underwhelmed by the new upcoming steel Sub. New Rolexes with those fat lugs and crown guards... you should never touch perfection.
ubiquitous Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 wasnt the blue 16610 a limited edition released in Asia only model? "summer blue sub" or something to that effect It was a 1680 for that one...
ubiquitous Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Quite a lot of controversy surrounding this one... Personally, I'm not certain that it's legit. Seems that any odd or unusual dial variations that can't be supported or explained otherwise are tagged with the 'special limited edition for the Asian markets' rationale by default, simply to justify a price premium Red dial Daytonas immediately come to mind...

I hope this one was "put to sleep" fast. Maybe it was a limited Test run to see how it would fly.Gladly, it didn't! I have never been a fan of the "nipple" dials. and that is a really awful combination of blues.Compared to a 9411 Tudor Blue Sub, this one pales in comparison. Just my dos centavos
ubiquitous Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Well, the myth is that these blue 1680s were Asian market only, but if that were the case, you'd think that there would be more out there to have surfaced by now (so far, it's only the one that was sold by Antiquorum). There is much speculation that the dial came from a 1680/8, and was printed over in silver on the fonts with the markers rhodium plated; dial was retrofitted to a standard SS 1680 and the insert originated from a blue Tudor Sub. The latter (to me) is more plausable than the former...
By-Tor Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 When did they start producing the two-tone/full gold Sub? Is it possible that the dial is from a TT/gold Sub and they have just changed the markers? I mean something along with this
ubiquitous Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 That's the 1680/8 that I mentioned prior, BT. I suspect that the dial from that watch was modified and placed into the SS case to create the blue 1680...
praetor Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 Found a franken on ebay: well, technically franken by his description ebay link
sneed12 Posted March 2, 2010 Author Report Posted March 2, 2010 If Rolex made that watch I'd buy one. Eventually, I mean. When I make a pile of money. But I would, I promise.
praetor Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 yea, I agree, the dial printing is terrible. but the concept is awesome. I hate the new maxi dial and the beefy lugs on the newer ones.
mastrmindalliance Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 I've got one like the OP's. Fantasy but great looking watch... They really should make the gen.
TeeJay Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 TJ Thyne wears a blue sub on Bones, which apart from the dial and insert, in every other way looks like a regular 16610. Always wondered if it was a gen or, as they would say in Hollywoodland, a 'costume prop' PS If they ever re-make Jaws, he gets my vote for playing the role of Matt Hooper

The old 16613 blue dial is amazing, this watch has very disappointing color. Have you actually seen a gen in real life??? This WG has an amazing shine wich makes the blue really stands out...
highoeyazmuhudee Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 if you've ever seen LOST you'll notice some horrendous Daytona reps. Also the infamous fake in Kill Bill
