Explorer II - real or fake?

So I have a friend who asked if I would be interested in picking this up from a guy he works with who has run into financial trouble. These are photos I received from a bad camera phone, supposed to receive better pics later. The 2nd to last photo is the best over the 10 minutes of our text conversation requesting better pics. I have a fair collection of gen watches, but have never owned or really even closely examined the Explorer II. Anyway tell-tale signs from these bad photos?

It might be worth going to an AD with this guy for pure entertainment value. However, based upon the poor quality of both the watch and the photos this guy is a nut and I'd stay away from him.

Ya, I'm not sure how many minutes we would be there before they asked us to kindly leave.

Gen for reference.

Beautiful! This may be my favorite Rolex, I have always had a thing for white dials.

So the end of this story....the owner of this watch (Thomas) went to the AD himself, then called to apologize for wasting my time. He said he paid $3,500 for it and felt like an idiot. I couldn't disagree with him.. :)

Man that really sucks to hear that. I would much rather lose that kind of money at the casino wearing a rep ;) then just lose all the money IN the rep... :bangin:

Getting screwed and finding out when in good mood is one thing, finding it out when in financial troubles is completely different.

Invite him for some beers and show him your nice reps. Have an evening full of watchtalk and laughter. This might push up his mood!

Anytime I hear people selling their watches for "financial troubles/family problems" ... I just get a bad feeling

I'm on the verge of selling my Tudor Heritage due to financial trouble... The only thing preventing me doing so, is that it has too much sentimental value, and at sale, won't raise enough money to actually be of any real financial assistance, so I would be down a piece which means a lot to me, and still not have enough cash to make the difference, so no sale for me, but just to say, sometimes, financial difficulties are legit ;):good:

Ya, I did feel bad for him but I've never even met this guy. I suppose the least I could do is guide him to sources to find quality reps, since he probably has never been in a sound financial position to buy a "gen" rolex in the first place.

The guy probably isn't even in "financial trouble" It's just a good reason to try and sell a rep as a gen for quick cash. Then if the buyer has done his homework and DOES call him out as it being a fake then he has the sympathy story to fall back on... " I didn't know it was a fake and paid $3500 bucks for it" "Now what am I going to do." That draws the anger away from him trying to sell you a fake watch and make you the buyer feel sorry for his fall on hard times. Oldest crook trick in the book!
