A Discussion On Drums...

Its Peart btw! You really have to have something special to stand out as a drummer. IMHO there haven't been any real standouts since Peart, Bonham, Moon, Collins, and Bruffard. Man, the 70's was a good time for music!

thats only cause you aren't listening to the new music :)

There are less rock stars that have universal non- muscian appeal, but that is true across the board, i think its more the way music is marketed - i mean there are no Guitar Hero's that your average idiot on the street can identify.

But there are definatly stand out drummers.

you want to talk fast hands - ala buddy rich -

check out Admin lang http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J_ePg8DNEI (notice by the way the single bass drum as per earlier discussion)

want to talk groove? - will calhoun of living colour http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQG60858LQo

and, crap check out this 12 yr old http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeqdyOjJCcc

and of course my favorite is Mike Portnoy of dream Theater (vinnie doesn't count he was out in the 70's) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A70riIDQ_r4

Zappa was a god, and nearly everyone that played for him was amazing, including Vinnie.

I heard a good interview regarding Nicco McBrain. He would not use a double pedal to do Clive's parts, and struggled until he could do them with single pedals on the two drums. He thought double pedals were cheating, nothing a real drummer would do.

Why no mentions of Bonzo? He was more interesting on three drums than most guys on monster sets, you just have to listen closer.

no my father swears by him.

Here is my top story top compliment ever.

I sat in with a jazz big band a few years ago - i played a song that was nto a hard core swing tune, but one that buddy rich used to play. Mercy Mercy mercy

After the tune - i hear a "where did you come from man" - from the back row -a trumpet player - Thought i had a great groove.

That guy - was at my college under scholarship getting a masters - he got that scholarship as a "ringer' cause he was a touring member of the buddy rich big band.

That was the greatest compliment i ever got :)

we had a jam band for a few months - we met really early in the morning.

- i never got to try to go tot he level i would have wanted in music - But, thanks to this and a few other things, i have peace with it :)

I'll bite..on this one...

drumming for over 20 years.

quartet, big band in middle/high school.

Drumcorps (snare drum) from 9yrs old until 21 (age out yr). Taught a few during the summer until around 2001.

Marched with the best of them on the DCI circuit if anyone knows about Drumcorps that is.. but Im sure someone has.

Not a single rudiment I cannot play straight, dragged, flammed, inverted you name it.. too bad I dont play too much anymore....losing the chops to play mad fast like that... :) but I can still groove!!

Gone thru 3 sets as a kid. biggest was 12 piece (not including cymbals of course). Have a nice Yamaha DXTIIS I use now hooked up to PC running Sonar software.

Biggest influences.

Buddy Rich

Gene Krupa

Dave Weckl

Neil Peart

William Calhoun

Pat Torpey

Alex Van Halen

I thought music and drums stood still for a long time too, until my buddy started sending me newer metal bands' music. You won't hear it on the radio, but there are many stellar drummers coming out every day.

There are many great newer drummers in thrash, death, speed, etc. metal types. Check out Lamb of God or Opeth. Primus had a great drummer too. You might hate the music, but the musicians are top notch.

Let's not forget the very first Rush song "in the mood" (different drummer than Peart). Nothing but cow bell!!!! I wonder what that guy is doing these days? :g:

He does weekly poker games with the 5th beatle and Dave Mustain

- Man i hope that someone gets this joke and its not to obscure :)
