eta 2824 DOA.... What could possibly have gone wrong?

I just purchased one of those smp ceramics with a ETA 2824 movement, but it arrived doa. I don't want to send it back to China just yet, and tomorrow I will receive the tool to open the caseback and look at what's going on. It was working when it was sent according to the TD, what could possibly have gone wrong with it during shipping that could have caused it to completely freeze? I have only played around with 21js, so this will be alien to me, and if it is just a screw or 2, I could save sending it back, time and money......

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Probably better to send it to one of the watch repair folks on the forum, get it fixed and serviced. In the long run better than the hassle of sending it back to China, customs worries etc.

panerai153 a 21j better off getting a new one and taking a hammer to the old one. Who works on those anyway? :pimp:

Ok read that wrong not 21j  an Eta, so send to smithy need to service these except in rare cases upon receipt anyway.

Yep, send it off for service.

Always include a service when you buy a watch, and you will always be happier.

The TD's can be great guys and all, but when you order your watch...they rarely stock them and they go and get your watch, pack and ship to you. The movements that come in these reps can be pulls from older watches or broken and quickly repaired movements. Not a nice new freshly installed eta movement. Sometimes you can get lucky and buy a new rep without a problem, but your better off in the long run just to figure a service when you buy it.

Having opened it, it all seems ''ok'', Compared to pictures, no missing screws etc..... One thing I noticed was when I pushed the balance wheel, it didn't rock like my other watches. Its just still.... Doesn't move or wobble. Of course I won't try anything myself, but it pretty bloody dirty also. And smells of oil.

1. Send it back to China and have it replaced with probably another dirty movement?
2. Send it to uk watch services over on RWI, have it fixed/ cleaned?

Certainly worth having it serviced mate especially if your keeping it long term  ;)  I just had my first DOA on an Abyss 44mm, sent it to MD for a service and reportedly working well now!

Mind you that was my first Doa out of about 80 watches  :inverted:

a slight tap on the side may reposition the balance staff, if thats whats wrong. If it was dropped while running that will happen. If doesn't start, service it.
