cmr15
Hi guys, i have a little problem with my 5508, i got a really nice dial from Ivan and a case set from Phong, but now i got the watch back from my watchmaker and the case is above the swiss at 6 o'clock... Either the dial is printed too big or the retaining ring is too small, did anyone here came across the same problem? Does anyone have a solution maybe? Thanks in advance for your responses! dropbear2008
Might be a 6538/5510 dial which will be slightly larger than 5508.
ogladio
Sorry to hear this. Have you taken this up with Ivan and Phong - ie double checked that you've made the correct order and their understanding of dial size in a 5508? My notepad contains following, which I've found accurate sofar from my builds: 6536 26,98 circa cal. 1030 deep 100/330 6536/1 27,68 circa cal 1030 deep 100/330 5508 27,69 circa cal 1530 deep 100/330 6538 27,00 circa cal 1030 deep 200/660 5510 26,96 circa cal.1030 deep 200/

nick1972
Can you measure the rehaut of your case? Edited July 23, 2015 by nick1972
dbane883
The dark lord doesn't make mistakes. There's a 99% chance the dial aperture on the phong case was milled incorrectly.
cmr15
I will try to meassure the rehaut, that is what i also think is the mistake. I already wrote to them both but did not yet got an answer... And i also checked that i ordered the correct dial;)
milesd
I ran into the same problem with my 6536/1. The small crownguard models aren't as popular so my guess is that the case makers don't get it right. Ivan didn't mess up the dial, the case was flawed. However I had an NDT case so it's not the same.

Mendota Explorer
^ Wow! Look at that case! I love that swooping shape of the lugs and how thin it is.
ogladio
Ok, so confirmed that dial is correct size. Hope you can get Phong to adapt. My guess would be he mixed up with more common 6538 or 6536 choices. Hope you get this together, based on your starting parts this should become a grail! Mendota Explorer
Actually, the 5510 used a cal. 1530 movement, not a 1030. I only know this because the 5510 is my ultimate grail. I would love to build one because they are so rare (only 300 to 600 were produced, and only during 1959). Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the rarest of them all? The 5510! If Phong indeed can produce a good 5510 case then this could be a contender for a future, super genken build like you guys are all doing. http://www.vintagehour.com/rolex-submariner-ref-5510-rarest-of-the-big-crowns/ Edited July 23, 2015 by Mendota Explorer
ogladio
^You're of course fully correct. That note was a copy-paste from VRF for the dial sizes (from Ivan iirc) - haven't looked that closely at the other info (trying to cover up lol!) Mendota Explorer
No worries, my friend. It is really cool that this detailed info is even readily available like this. These forums just blow me away sometimes with the amount of helpful information that is here.
Nanuq
Notice also the case differences between the 6536 and 6536/1 ... they take different crystals too. Here's how the chapter ring looks on a 6536/1.
