So I know this topic isn't a new one, and probably not interesting to many, but I found it amusing.

So today after work, I'm walking around the Salamanca district of Madrid (Madrid's most exclusive central neighborhood). One of my favorite watch storefronts has an amazing looking Panerai Daylight on display in the window. As I'm admiring all of the beautiful watches, one of the sales associates opens the door, comes out, and asks me if I'd be interested in trying anything on in the store. (i was outside without ANY intention of walking into the store). I tell her that i'm not particularly interested in trying anything specific on, but that I wouldn't mind coming in just to see more of the merchandise they have. I happened to be wearing my new, highly polished, Silix-Prime, Pam253 Luminor Regatta Flyback.

As I walk into the store I'm greeted by all 4 of the store's employees working at the time! All carrying super enthusiastic smiles on their faces. I begin to look around at some of the display cases, and my eye catches a beautiful Breitling Chronomat Evo with white face and brown aligator strap. As I'm admiring, the woman opens the case, takes out the watch and hands it to me without me even asking! She says.. "please have a seat and try it on." (of course it was in spanish). Of course I do what she asks me, and begin to admire the breitling from every angle while sitting on the supple leather couch. She begins asking me where i'm from, what watches I'm interested in and also mentions the "BEAUTIFUL" panerai on my wrist. She begins talking about Panerai and its exclusive quality and interesting Brand history (heard it all before).

While she's talking I try on the Chronomat Evo (of course i was dumb enough to take off my pam253). While my pannie was on the table she asks if she can see it. My mind started to race. What if she notices the thin 12 and 6 font, or if she notices that the 10 on my minute subdial uses isn't sans serif!?? Worst yet, WHAT IF SEES the back and sees the the movement is in fact NOT a caliber opXIX, but is in fact an asian 7750!???? Before i could open my mouth she had already picked up the watch and began to look at it. The first thing she says.. "Que Bonito Reloj!" (what a BEAUTIFUL watch). A wave of relief came over me as i realized the girl probably didn't know the first place to look on my watch to tell that it was fake. She clearly didn't even know the watch was a limited until i pointed it out to her in her panerai catalog (of course at that point i had put my watch back on). I guess the flaws and small details that are so apparent to me wouldn't even cross the mind of a normal AD. And in hindsight, I guess there would be no need to question anyone's watch that's looking at panerais in the store window.

All in all, i ended up having a good discussion with the girl about panerai and it's connotation here in spain (which isn't very well know at all!). Towards the middle of the conversation the woman asks me if i'd like a refreshment. Her associate brings me an orange Fanta, a bottle of San Pelligrino water, and a plate of Jamon Serrano with cheese!!(Spanish smoked ham slices with manchego cheese). The only thing missing was a glass of Rioja Wine. haha! I ate the ham and everyone talked to me like I was their best friend. Luckily towards the end of the conversation I received a call from the girlfriend. I hung up and told the friendly sales people that I had to go, but that i would be returning another day to see more of the watches they had to offer. They were more than pleased, and wished me a positive "hasta la proxima se

Good story.

PS You mentioned the exact watch in there that I have my eye on - white EVO Chronomat with brown gator strap (want the VCO first though). I forgot whose own it is on this forum that has it on a gen Bretling strap but that watch is beautiful.

I'm sure our boy plaifender was one step ahead of you, VK. But the Spanish sales gal probably had dark hairy arms. :Jumpy:

Her arms certainly weren't hairy.. although i didn't see her armpits. Cute girl. You guys got me thinking that i might just go back there!... (joke).... (sigh)

In Spain women with dark hairy arms are very appreciated amigo.

Havent you ever heard about Spanish shoe laces?

Only the finest cordovan shoemakers like John Lobb and Alden get Spanish shoe laces.

LOL Manuel

John Lobb, I guess it's not just England's finest

Nice user name 'Pubus' kind of reminds me of someone else's. Also a great story and I think I remember looking in that shop last time I was in Madrid.

Anyway to answer your question I was in a watch boutique located in a luxury hotel and wearing my 'Ultimate' Planet Ocean and the guy selling me a Sinn U1 said before I took it off- "that's an unusually good copy- where did you get it?". Said he spotted the bezel pearl and that something about it just didn't look right when I asked him how he knew. He had a '007' 45mm on his own wrist so I guess he knew them pretty well even though he didn't specialise in them. He was very impressed with the overall quality of my watch but of course the only info I gave him on it's origins was 'China'.

Not only did I get out of there alive I also got a free rubber strap for the U1 and a couple of Sinn tools.

^ now thats a fabolous story :) I quess you too got lucky with meeting nice AD salesman :)

I am always happy I live where I live where ppl think reps are only those crappy ten bucks stuff made out of the whorst kind of steel which probably makes you allergic and gets you some red gum :D

Anyway if I would meet an AD who admired my reps I would ask him to meet one day in pub or somewhere for reps vs gens comparison :)

Did you end up dating the girl at the shop ???? :)

BTW: I know the shop you are talking about .... and your english are pretty for a spaniard ... or you are not. ;)

Didn't end up dating the girl at the shop.. it was YESTERDAY! haha. Are you from Madrid AMK? I'm not spanish, i'm American, i've been living here for a year and a half now.. Before here.. Perugia, Italy and Paris, France. I'm basically an american globetrekker intrigued to get away from my country.
