Julio Baptista's first goal was indescribably good. It was, as they say both in Spanish and Portuguese, "contundente" = roughly, no doubt about it. It only looks easy, to those who don't know soccer. To those who do...well, it's like my childhood hero, Marco Van Basten, bending one into the net from an impossible angle versus the old USSR side. It was popular in the UK until the 1930s (especially in the South of England) in the same spirit of "rugger" for the game of rugby (of either code), a corruption of "aSOCCiation" and the schoolboy slangy ending of -er. It is the word used for the game known as football in "British" English by such English-speaking lands as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States of America, South Africa, all of the Caribbean, and wherever the English language flourished, such as India, Pakistan and Hong Kong. It is also the word used for the game in the Republic of Ireland. Further, it is used exclusively in British public schools for game. The word soccer is frowned upon by "British" English speakers as a creeping Americanism, which as evidenced above, couldn't be farther from the truth. Indeed. I will decloak myself here as not being very fond of ManUre, but I have always had a sneaking liking for David Beckham. He and Denis Irwin always wore their shirt proudly, and I respected that. Cracking goal. P.S.: Was that Motty calling the goal? Sounds like him, but you know, I emigrated, gulp almost 10 years ago... docblackrock Posted October 25, 2007 Report Share Posted October 25, 2007 And to show I'm not biased, probably the best goal I've ever seen.....and scored against my team Pablo Aimar Interesting fact - this goal was cited as the goal that got the then-Valencia coach, Rafa Benitez, the manager's job at Liverpool, the club it was scored against. I still think that team was the best of modern times. Sure it didn't have the success of the '90s Milan side, but Valencia 2001-2004 won two La Liga titles in three years (breaking up the Madrid-Barca monopoly) and a UEFA Cup. They were nicknamed "the Crushing Machine" for the way they ruthlessly and relentlessly closed down the opposition, whilst playing truly beautiful football, as this team goal finished off by Aimar, showed. I like him too, too bad he's often hurt, because he has a natural feel for the game -- much more than such overrated Argie players like Ariel Ortega. I also very much enjoy JR Riquelme, but he goes missing in matches much too often. Nice goal and spirit of 'fair play to him', DBR. Cheers! Come on, DBR, even Terry Butcher said that was a perfect goal. It was Maradona's skill, not the England defence looking like traffic cones, which made that goal magical. I prefer Messi's almost carbon copy goal scored last season. Messi is outrageously fantastic. However, Michael Owen returned the favour to the Argies in WC 1998, in a strikingly similar goal to Maradona's, in terms of pace and audacity. Maradona was a great individual player but did not respect the game or his opponents. Pele almost transcended the game and inspired people, even those outside of football. Rangers V Celtic May 2007 where Charlie Adam waiting to take a free kick spotted the Celtic keeper (aka the Holy Goalie) telling the defensive wall to jump. Charlie decided to play the free kick under the wall making the keeper look like a tw*t (again).
