First, yes, I don't say "movies" usually except when around Americans. But it's an international forum, so sue me. ;)

Second, due to my cold, I haven't had a chance to watch many new releases, except the ones I receive as sneak previews for review. Here go a few of my quickie film review capsules for your consideration.

Hey, when a ticket costs $7.50-$13.00, depending where in the US you are, or

The best movie this year? The Transformers.

Trust me! For us guys who will never grow up, this movie is amazing!

This has been an ABOVE average summer movie season. Transformers lost out to Number 1, Die Hard 4.0 for ME, but I loved Transformers too. Not just because I grew up with the cartoons, because I rarely watched it.

But because I love to see New "Everyman" Shia LeBoeuf in anything. And as mentioned, Megan Fox was HOT.

Amen to that...she was the only reason I went to see this typical Michael Bay (Pearl Harbor/Armageddon)OverTheTopPleaseTurnOFFTheOverHypedSensationalistMusicalScore...

...I had to cover my ears....but my eyes were treated to great CGI and Ms Fox..giddyup...

Not a new release, but still...

Elizabeth the Golden Age

Ok it plays a little loose and fast with certain historical facts (dramatic licence I suppose) and I doubt it'll go down a storm in the Vatican, but Cate Blanchette is, as always, extremely watchable, and the direction and cinematography superb. Once again, ignoring the reviews pays dividends. Not going to win any Oscars of course, but all of our party liked it, which is really all that matters.

Just for a load of laughs, David Lynch's Eraserhead

If you haven't committed suicide after seeing it, try the director's cut of Blade Runner for its soothing music by Vangelis, the perfect visuals, the more than decent performance by Harrison Ford, the absolutely stunning 'Rachel' and the total ambiguity of the replica/human storyline....

Actually go to a cinema?

Yikes, that's sooo....well, promiscuous.

Game Plan was Ok...overtones of Curly Sue......mildly amusing....altho I quite like Dwayne Johnson..he seems a personable enough guy...iwth an obvios penchant for Panny's....which get displayed a lot in GP.....if only he'd drop his old persona The Rock...he's not too bad a comedic actor...I quite liked him in Be Cool...!

Worst movie of ALL time....WTF is going in the heads of these people.....Grindhouse....full of old Hollywood has beens...and desperate wannabes...maybe I'm just getting old....and suffering from a lack of recreational drugs....Cheech and Chong were funny....Grindhouse serves no real purpose....we've seen it all before....from Russ Meyer to Romero / Carpenter all the old pulp fiction paperback stuff...etc etc....NOT funny...and certainly NOT clever....same for most of the [censored] from Lion's Gate...Saw....any number.../ Hostel etc etc...!

Best movies for me this year....Illusionist...Prestige....Babel....The Good German....Syriana.....The Contender...The maltese Falcon....King's Row revisited......DH4.....for action....and a myriad of Thai comedies which are absolutely hilarious....!

I'm glad you said that, as the critics were brutal about this film, as noted! At least now, I have a character reference for it, as I know you have similar tastes as I. Well, I imagine we do. ;)

OMG, you reference Eraserhead and Blade Runner?

Ryyannon, you and I scary similar you know that, don't you? If the Italian boyfriend thing doesn't work out, I'm taking a Jefferson Airplane to Paris. And yes, I like pigeons -- usually medium-rare, but hey.

WTF. We're going to the UGC George V in the Champs-Elys

Heh. I have a friend who hates anything Michael Bay does. Well after Pearl Harbour, I can't totally fault him.

Tech, you're so raunchy! I love it. :D

So, Ms. Barrett is also a film critic.......where else can she surprise us?......My pick for one of the best "good idea" movies this year....Kevin Costner in "Mr. Brooks"....creepy, and scarily one of the best portrayals of a so called normal person with a not so normal "hobby".......couple of nice watches in that one to boot.

I haven't really sat down and watched a movie in a while. Certainly nothing 'new'. I think the last 'new' film I watched was Transformers, and that was okay. I liked Shia Shia LeBoeuf and Megan Fox (who didn't like Megan Fox??!! ) but for me, the star of the show had to be Bumblebee. Made me want to track down an old Camaro and customize it to look like the production car (which was sold on eBay for a fortune :( ) The thing that bugged me most about the movie, was the rapid angle/camera shifts during the fight scenes... Almost as if they didn't want to have to focus too closely on the robots themselves... The last film I last watched which actually interested me, was Fast Food Nation. Awesome movie, and damn Avril Lavign has straight hair :D The last movie I actually watched, was L4yer Cake on DVD :)

vbarrett: Not sure if its still out, but Stardust was great for me. Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. American gangster is really slow at the beginning and middle. You can see why people liked it, but for me it was a little too slow. The only really enjoyable part is towards the end between Denzel & Russel. Rest I havent seen, though Lions for Lambs is on my list.

TeeJay: You got that right about Transformers and Megan Fox. Just got the DVD last night and rewatched the movie.

Don't really watch modern films. Too much rubbish to filter my way through. However, if I were stranded on a desert island and could only take one film with me it would probably be 'Kind Hearts and Coronets'

one of the few films that I envy people who haven't seen it because when they do (and they most certainly should) they are going to get that first time viewing feeling that I will never again have.

Finally sat down yesterday evening and watched Fractured with Anthony Hopkins...

Have to say, it was pretty damn good...

I have gone on the record innumerable times saying that I disliked Fractured, albeit it's not unwatchable (far from it).

But I have to go with DET11 and say that its cousin, Mr. Brooks, was a much better overall film than Fractured.

The latter had too many idiosyncracies for me to appreciate, and too boot, had a cold, antiseptic air. Of course, it was mostly a legal drama, whereas Mr. Brooks is more like a peek into the mind of a serial killer during the fact, not after it.

Neither is a must-see film. Both are worth the price of admission/rental, though. IMHO. :)

I've mentioned this before too, but I actually do this for a living. Not only in the English language either, since many films have staggered debuts all over the world, as you know. :)

@Sin22: Stardust! Thanks so much. I had not caught that. Another one I cannot miss is Once. I have a preview DVD screener of that somewhere, though it long since premiered in cinemas here in the US. Because I specialise in what is called foreign film in America, I get a lot of these screeners for review. Nina Frisk from Sweden was one, and This is England was another.

This is England is simply amazing. Must-see fare.

@Dieselpower: I love Ealing comedies, and that's a particular fave. :) ...but we're living through the Golden Age of Indies, people. Get out there, and watch some of them. You won't be disappointed!

A movie that will wake you up and knock you on the floor is the classic " The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover". An all star Birish cast and a jaw dropping ending. This movie must be seen by anyone who appreciates the art of film.

Poor Peter Greenaway...never hit the big time, unlike Verhoeven (who sold out), or Soderbergh (who is fairly astute about his talents).

I liked Prospero's Books too, though few do.

Honestly....I pretty much love all movies...I simply love going to the theatre buying my popcorn and just staring at a screen

for 2 hours. I love even bad movies (does that make sense?)

By the way V, Shia is quite a captivating actor....he even entertained me in Disturbia.

YES! To me anyway.

I have a great home theatre, and a nice (though not Plasma screen) huge television set in my library/comp/family room. I bought myself a pricey popcorn machine, and have a chaise-longue to stretch and watch my films at home.

I love it.

But I PREFER the communal experience much more. Do I like the mobiles going off, and the chatter of tweenies behind me, kicking the chairs with their feet? No. But I love shared laughter and gasps. I love standing in the queue overhearing people muttering about their lives. I love watching a film with someone I love, because it's happiness shared.

I am such a cerebral, almost unnaturally cool person, that I like the jolt of humanity around me, warts and all. It forces me out of my comfort zone.

By the way V, Shia is quite a captivating actor....he even entertained me in Disturbia.

YES! Agree 100%. I wouldn't say he's the new Jimmy Stewart. But that diffidence, the modesty, and the innate Americanness of the chap is fascinating. :)

He's like a gentile Woody Allen, without the big city neurosis. And so young too.

I was captivated by Disturbia. But then I love Rear Window.

I will second that for the The Illusionist (watched for third time last night)....The Prestige, Babel, Syriana and The Good German are all excellent movies that have been in the DVD player more than once...I haven't seen The Contender

Also, The Departed movie was outstanding...I highly recommend that one....I plan on watching it again and again....its a keeper. Very good movie from Scorcese

Let me add Apocalypto along with Pan's Labrynth. Visual treats as they say....

I thought Apocalypto was intriguing....Shooter was excellent....as was TBU......Pan's Labyrinth I feel asleep during...not thru'boredom.....just a surfeit of movies in the one night.....the life of a reviewer I'm afraid....still it'll make it back into the player this coming weekend....Terabithia....dull......Last Legion..tedious.......I'm not persuaded by the Beowulf trailers......the animated CGI 'actors' have that dull far away insipid staring look in their eyes that no animator hasn't yet been able to overcome....and the thought of Angelina ......CGI'd with no panty squirrel or raspberry ripples.....is just plain obscene...!

Had a good night on Friday.......back to back James Coburn.......Our Man Flint.....In Like Flint....re-visited......deep gub joy.......excellent...where can I get the Presidential ringtone as....well...a ringtone.......?......I want to put it on Julio my houseboys' phone......speed him up a little.....he's getting to be a little too relaxed.....especially in those transparent hot pants.....:D
