I once read that Prince Charles, on visiting America in the 70s, remarked that the bald eagle was "an odd symbol" for a nation to have. That's when I knew:

1- I wasn't a monarchist

2- Environmentalists are a weird and contradictory lot

3- I loved America

Here's another... a ground storm during the Susitna 100. There had been 5-6" new snow and the wind came way up, and the course was 100 miles cross country. You can see the snow blasting off the top of Susitna across the flats.

The eagles one is the best, but there is an eerie incandescence about this photo:

The interesting thing is, that's how it really looks in the winter here. There is almost no red or yellow in the light, so everything is in shades of blue. That's part of the reason why ice caves are blue too.
