arminvanbuuren
hi guys how are ya.. man i feel so bad and down today.. so i thought well the only thing that'll make me feel better is if i buy another watch.. however around 3 months ago i promised myself not to buy another watch until next yr.. but i buckled and i just spent another $330 on a watch .. what should i do? i'm having a purchase dissonance :~(.. anyone wanna make me feel better? im [censored] scared that my gf and my family will scream at me.. and think that i'm some dumb crazy maniac person who buys watches (yes they think it's only "watches".. and im a loser for being obsessed with them).. so yeh like im having weird feelings :S
georgegrasser
Oh, don't worry. GF/Family have their hobbies too I am sure. I continue to buy even though I know that each and every purchase brings me just that much closer to death. You can't concern yourself with what other people think. Take George W. Bush for example, he could give a rats a$$ what any of us think, and goes about his business of destroying a country. If anyone questions you about your spending, just tell them that you're a psychopath.
Rolexman
yes they think it's only "watches".. and im a loser for being obsessed with them Same here. It takes time and a lot of talking for them to understand. Eventually they will!
dadog13
my family and GF stopped asking and commenting about the watches I am buying...right now I am in China and I will be coming back home with a bag full of reps...I want to see if they will say anything to that! will buy the GF and to each memebr of the family a nice present so they won't beat me for spending 2000$ on reps and accesories for watches.... Once you reach the 20+ pieces in your collection they will give up on you...probably they still belive there is hope for you....
V
Dont feel bad.. for every rep i had in the past my wife has now a genuine designer bag. She doesn't wear them all the same day is she? I have around 50 straps for one watch. i don't wear them all at the same time but neither she is So as people have said everyone has their passions let yours be watches. arminvanbuuren
yeah watches are my passion.. like i swear watches and practicing muaythai and jiujitsu are the only things that makes me happy.. but for some reason they never understand.. u made a good point about the reps and gens thing.. i mean i have 3 sisters 1 gf 1 mum and 1 dad.. and dad has a gen rolex presidential all gold with diamond bezel, mum also have a matching pair, in between each of my sisters and mum have at least 2 genuine LV bags.. and all of my reps together (14 reps in total) probably is worth 1 of their bag .. so that doesnt make it that bad to think about it. scoobs1971
Women have their bags, shoes and chocolate as a stress-relief. Now take control and buy yourself a new watch!!!!
Corgi
I know how you feel. I got a very stern talking to (followed by ~1 day silent treatment) after spending $400 for a new Breitling. Now I am very close to spending $450 on a Patek Philippe and I'm kind of scared it might prompt WW3.
capice
My wife doesn't understand either, so I compared it with her "obsessive" need to buy clothes :) to feel less guilty about buying this one, just buy another........

SubFrog
My wife found my hidden (watch) drawer at the top of my clothes chest. I walked in on her standing over it...just staring! Then the look turned to me. I've never felt so small... ...but, I got over it...and so did she. I then proceeded to inquire about a new Day Date. I've yet to pull the trigger as I'm working on payment options, but it should be interesting to see the reaction I get. It's an obsession that, I'm sure, needs an "Anonymous" program. You can't stop...so, just find a 12 step program. You'll feel better.
jkerouac
Be sure to bring up someone who has a more expensive hobby than you do, such as restoring cars or sailing, for example. Reps are cheap therapy in comparison.

southcoast68
I understand how you feel Armin, I have been obsessing about getting another new watch for a coulple of weeks now. I have been feverishly looking at the trade sections of RWG, RWI and Repgeek for a couple of weeks now looking for something good. I have found many many good watches too, but I just cant seem to justify spending money right now, its like dying of thirst in the desert and the top to your canteen is rusted shut. I am having issues with what I spend on reps and want to get into more genuine territory, but the costs are skyrocketing. I was watching a Ebay auction for days on a Movado Datron, it was non-working and needed a service, I let the auction go with 23 minutes to go because I just could not deal with the current bid price of over $800 and I felt crappy about it because it is one of my personal grail watches, but $800 for a 30 year old broken watch?, I just could not do it. I also realize that what I don't pop for now will probably be twice the price next year, but there are real bills to pay and I have to be responsible about it. Heck, I remember when you could pick up a real nice Omega Speedmaster Pro for about $700 used, now they are $1200 and up on the 'Bay. I guess I should just take By-Tor's advice and just buy something and not stress about it. As far as family understanding, well I guess I am lucky, my wife does not understand the watches themselves ("looks like just another watch to me"), but she does understand that they make me happy. This past Christmas, my wife, my brother and my mother were all in colusion to get me a special gift. My wife and mother came up with the idea, and my brother built it, its a bedside table with a hidden front door. Behind the door is a compartment holding 3 trays of compartments to store watches (it can hold about 36 watches in total). None before has a gift affected me so, just knowing the family understands the "addiction" means the world to me. Is this watch thing an addiction?? Awww yeah!! Stephane
I killed my entire familly last night. Problem solved Joking of course. Familly, friends, even worse when it comes to a couple... Humans that we are miss the main point. Being truly happy when the other is happy makes life so more interresting. Armin, don't feel guilty. As long as you do not kill an old lady to get her cash to buy a watch, there is nothing wrong in owning 14 watches. Each night, in my bed, before I sleep, I look at the watch of the day for a couple of minutes...just looking at the minute hand sweeping makes me relax and happy. :sorcerer:

crystalcranium
No matter how much I try to explain it...no one gets it especially those nitwits who think a watch is for telling time! I can't count the number of times my bud holds up the time display on his cell phone saying "Isn't this all you need idiot?" Never mind the guy has 2 Corvettes in his garage. Watches are jewelry to me and when it comes to my jewelry, I'm just like a woman. Never enough.
Ztech
I tell my GF... look I work my ass off and now have no life since it's all devoted to her and building a future and all that jazz that men don't really care about. So I tell her that I "need" to buy a few watches, gen or rep, and take her out to the local bar/pub/club/fill-in-the-blank here to show it off and begin a serious intelligent discussion with the boys or I'll have to collect knives and guns and go postal. That usually solves it pretty good. It helps if you get out your old uniform/gear and slap some cammo on your face while you're doing this speal. Good luck and don't sweat it. There are worse things in life.
