I have high hopes for next season, F1 is back on the BBC, so no more poorly timed adverts! F1 on the BBC HD channel would be so sweet too! ^_^

At long last :D

I was kicked off the TV halfway through the race, couldn't get the other TV to work, and managed to see the rest live on ITV's website. The pictures were clear and with no lag, so I gotta give them credit for that... and no adverts too :)

Curses! I never once thought to check how the online coverage compared to the television lol, oh well at least we don't have to put up with James Allen ever again :drinks:

It's going to be interesting what happens next year. From what I've read BMW appear to have the upper hand with KERS, but Williams and Honda have both invested big bucks in companies that specialise in the technology. So next year, teams that were near to the back and midfield might suddenly be right at the front end. I think the teams with the best aero departments will still be the favourites though; skinny wings with more mechanical grip from the slicks will be where the advantage lies, not in silly boost systems. I'm not even sure if I can see KERS actually materialising?

I'll be interested to see him do it again. Personally, I can't stand Hamilton. To say he's arrogant is an understatement. He complains that he gets 'treated differently' now, and that people 'pester him' for autographs and what not, so in my mind, that makes him nothing more than a jumped up arrogant POS. He's been into racing all his life, so he knew full well the demands which celebrity status would put on him, yet still complains about the attention which his career brings to him. He chose to pursue his career (and kudos to him for succeeding in that goal) so he should also pay the price that comes with it (signing autographs etc) without whining about it or threatening to run off to Swizerland as a tax exile. <_<

It really does lose a lot of emphasis and expression in writing. If you watch the interviews it comes across much differently than the way you are interpretting it.

Do you think? I mean sure, everyone can smile for the cameras and give a good interview when they know they're being scrutinized. I agree, context and emphasis can certainly be taken differently than it's intended by the author, but I don't think there's any mistaking the basics of those comments. Okay, maybe he wasn't on some 'blowing his stack rant' that he had no privacy, but, at the end of the day, those things must have been bugging him for him to make those comments, or consider moving to Switzerland... He knew the lack of privacy which celebrity status would bring, so should take the responsibility which the celebrity status brings with it. One can't 'be famous', and then complain about the lack of privacy. Or, if one doesn't like the intrusion into one's life, one could always step back from the spotlight and out of the celebrity limelight. He can't be universally popular, afterall, the Abbey dropped him from their ad campains for CGI woodland animals ;)

Knowing that the general public can be really stupid and annoying, I have no problem with him moving to a country where he can get some privacy, in his shoes most of us would do the same. Some peeps can handle it, others can't and avoid it (for example: how Beckham still keeps it real is beyond me).....

Hell, you get some soap stars having to put up with public abuse, because people are so supid they think the actor is the character they play on screen! Never underestimate the incredible idiocy of the general public ;)

The only thing that bugs me is the TAX issue, he should have to put something back into the UK TAX coffers

Tj I think that level of celebrity status must take some getting used to, i am sure as he gets used to it he will handle it better.

That may well be the case, and I hope it will be, afterall, it's about time the UK had a sporting hero to be truly proud of. I just fear, having seen how others have handled being thrust into the limelight, that he's not one of those people... :(

Bro, I've worked in retail, the stupidity of the general public never surprises me anymore  The thing is though, even if he moves to Swizerland, while he might not have quite the same fanbase that he has here, people would still recognize him and come up to him. As you say, some folks can handle it, some can't and choose to avoid it. Personally, I think he comes under the catagory of those who can't, but isn't prepared to step back to avoid it. I think Beckham's secret, is, despite his celebrity, he is still a very private person. I would even liken it to the approach the Japanese have to privacy: Where there can't be physical privacy (due to the crowding) there can still be mental privacy (ritual protocol to keep the world at arm's length) Maybe that's an example Hamilton could learn from, so as to better cope with the demands his status puts upon him :)

I think lack of privacy to an extent bugs all famous people. It must be quite sad to be hounded where ever you go. In my mind I don't think Hamilton is the kind of person to complain/be ungrateful for his status, just watching other interviews and the way he is, he seems to be 'above' that kind of personality (but that's my interpretation of course)

I was watching an interesting program a while ago, and the production date was quite old too, Mr Coulthard looked very youthful! They were interviewing a lot of the drivers and asking why they moved abroad to Switzerland/Monaco. It got to Gehard Berger and he said something along the lines of....

'I know everyone has probably told you they come here for the privacy and the views, but I the main reason is tax....' :) The other drivers all dismissed it, but good old Gehard hit the nail right on the head.

To be honest, I agree, and I'm sure it can get tedious eventually. But. As before, that is the price someone pays for celebrity status, and, should it all get too much, all they need to do is step out of the limelight...

Well, in that article, he was complaining, and very specific. As I mentioned before, maybe he wasn't on a rant, and it might have just been a throwaway comment, but, for him to even say that in interview, it has to be on his mind... Maybe he will come to accept the attention in time as Andy suggested, here's hoping he can :) I guess it's just hard to change a first impression of someone ;)

Could well be the case :) Afterall, there are folks like Sir Sean Connery, and Phil Collins who live as tax exiles, and, in the case of F1 drivers, I can see the logic, afterall, with the international nature of the tracks, the majority of their 'income' is 'earned' overseas, rather in their native countries, so it's only right that it should not be taxed as a whole by their home country.... That's how I see it, at least ;)

Are you all British so s.......? Hamilton is a true champion? A Toro Rosso passed him..4-5 laps before the end of the race.. of the final race...

Bravo Hamilton!!!

LOL, well everyone in Formula one must be crap if a Toro Rosso has passed them...OH WAIT what happened in Monza? Reason Hamilton got passed by Vettel was cos Kubica was being an idiot and Hamilton wanted to let him pass instead of gettin smashed up and losing the title.

As for next year it should be really exciting slick tyres are back for more mechanical grip less aero dynamic grip and KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) which is basically a boost button you push for about 8 secs worth of extra power per lap. I believe the wasted energy from the brakes is used to make this happen but im not 100% sure anyway it should be good!

EDIT: Some more info on KERS here looks to be 80hp boost for 6.67 secs each lap...sound cool"

I can't stand hamilton !!!!

First of all he has to wear a gay TAG, when other driver can be sponsored by Richard Miles or AP :p

When you like a sport lie F1 (wich is not very spectacular in itself during 70 laps) you have to take position and speculate on the drivers character to make it more fun. so i admit my opinon may be totally biased

I think i dislike hamilton because everything is too easy for him.

He his certanly one of the best driver, and will be a legend.

Being almost champion in his first year and championin his second certanly prove his enormous talent

And he does desearve his title. (i think the glock story is [censored]), and Mclaren his generally not as well considered by FIA than ferrari when it commes to politic decision.

But my F1 hero his Alonso, manly because he waked up the boring sport that F1 was during ferrari/sumacher domination.

He his the one that overtook him, and made him retire.

So when the confrontation between Alonso and hamilton raised i chosed to support alonso

I think alonso is one of the best driver but also a genius in car devlopement, look at what renault can be with him or without him.

I like kimi/kubika too and have great expectation in Vetel

But hamilton is just "too clean" without interest ..

The perfect standardised product .. Comunication glamour and overall emptyness ..

But somtime under the communication and control, the true ego can't stay hidden.

Of course all pilot have massive ego (Alonso shure have), but they don't try to be the perfect children magazin poster.

he his like the "boyz band" of formula one (oops who is he dating by the way !!)

anyway the good news is whatever your favorite are, there is now a whole bunch of great competitor, and lot of suspense in the championship.

hope next year will be as fun. (and this time finish like i wish)

Alonso is an incredible talent. To see what he has done with that Renault defies belief, without a doubt one of the best drivers in F1, currently and historically.

I think next year with all of these changes it will be sink or swim. Massa is a great driver, but I don't know if he really has what it takes. He had some serious consitency problems at the beginning of the year. He ironed them out, but it will be interesting if he will 'cut the mustard' with these changes. Alonso on the other hand, I think with his skill and witchcraft he could pose a serious challenge next year. A mention on Hamilton....I think with his talent he will cope with the changes. Being very young and confident I think he will adapt to the changes quite quickly.

But at the end of the day I'l have to wait and see....I certainly don't think I've ever looked forward to a season of F1 so much as I have right now. It just seems to be so open, with some really very skilled drivers around and with the proposed changes, it could be a very varied season!

I think that's true.

I was winding up a friend last year when Hamilton moved saying it was just for money... but his blind loyalty always leads him to defend him saying it was for privacy... yeah right!

By the way that guy is a man ure fan, 'nuff said ;)

Yep ... It's all come too easy for him, that doesn't endear him to everyone, and it seems his fellow drivers too.

He's going out with the singer from the Pussycat Dolls.

And you're right, he appears to be the first manufactured F1 driver... but that couldn't happen without having the ability.

i sympathize with all the poor Brits who must be subject to an endless deluge of Hamilton-mania through the media for the rest of the 2008 even if i lust for their HD signals (totally incapable of meshing with the US, hmph !)

funny how no one mentions his true roots (Grenada, i think) ever since he hit the big time

You mean half his roots? His mother is English as far as I know.

Besides, if you are born and raised in England, you are English.... Don't tell me, Sylvester Stallone is an Italian actor? Andre Agassi is an Iranian tennis player? Muhammad Ali an African boxer?

I remember watching a young Jacques Villinueve in his Toyota Atlantic days. He was not even the best driver on his team, but it was him that landed the plumb ride in Indy Car, where he won the championship largely based on his consistency rather than race wins. Again, he was offered the plumb ride in F1 with Williams, where he managed to barely win the championship away from the much slower Ferrari.

Face it, driver skill has little to do with winning a championship sometimes. Each year there is only one or two cars that have a chance at winning any given event. Though he is talented, I cant help but think that Hamilton would be a mid pack driver with pretty much any other team, with the exception of ferrari.

This is a great thread. I'm new here and am kinda excited to see some passion for F1. It's not very prevalent in the states. Although I haven't followed it very closely this year it's nice to see some excitement and actually hear/see people discussing it. These occasions in F1 racing seem to be few and far between.

I do not believe in conspiracy theories. If Glock pits for tires, Hamilton wins. Since he didn't he had to try to keep the car on the track in the wet and fend off Hamilton. Keep in mind these guys are professionals. They ascended the auto racing ladder not by ceding victories but by being ultra-competitive. It would not be in there 'nature' to just let someone pass.

My two cents. Good thread!
