  1. true...it would run without oil...wasn't this a solution to a tourbillon rep? Make sure there's no oil since power was an issue...would work at least a year or so,,,
  2. Here is my issue. The USPS used to be ok, now they suck, can't even track when you send out of the country and they are losing a high percentage of what I send. Fed ex and UPS are out only because I live so far from their offices. I'm open to suggestions.
  3. I've always read better to use too little oil rather than too much...and have tried to practice that but there is an art to it....Not just dumping it on, more isn't always better.
  4. Nice pics...I like the 74...I know some poeple think it's silly to put that on a strap, but I think it gets the feel for an old vintage pam..didn't they write that one the straps when they were orgainizing them for display? Can't be too rational with this hobby, if it feels right, get out the marker.
  5. just got it this morning...Yes,,,it's something that would bug a movement person. But also gives me a chance to replace with another movement...will be fantasy but some fantasies are better than others.
  6. r u saying the newest noob 372 has glued crap on unitas bridges? ahhhhhh..that sucks
  7. Thanks..I ended up getting the noob version but it isn't here yet..I was just worried the ultimate cp would be somehow detectable..sounds silly but even if it was visually perfect probably would still bother me that it was the hands that were mods..would just remind me too much of the old reps.
  8. I wouldn't use glue...just overall a bad idea...just from looking at the video I'm guessing it's a easy fix. Might be the situation where the caseback holds it on? If the caseback is tight does it still move? That's not what you want but looks like the movement is too thick for a case clamp and screw? Still should be sitting flat and not moving back and forth? Just seems like the kind of thing if the right person had it in hand, would be an easy fix..but that's just my gut...
  9. I really didn't want to advise that,,,but that works too....congrats on a repair that didn't require a single tool.
  10. to see if the the coils are caught together or sticking,,,this makes the balance only do a short trip rather than the full side to side swing...and the short trip results in super fast times...it probably just had a hard hit on the way there...its is something that is visually detectable...once you fix it you should see the balance slow down..
  11. classic balance spring sticking.. open back..blow air..not using breath. to unstuck.
  12. Thanks,,,I can imagine the right tools...have to keep a sharp right angle for the bottle but top is curved so can't really clamp it down. Can't use a file as one slip creates a gap...certainly is easier to get one with a good fit. ...
  13. crown guard looks nice...any tricks to getting it perfectly flat agasin't the case?
  14. let me put it this way...does anyone know which version of the 372, H or Noob uses an actually longer cannon pinion to make up for the thick dial?
  15. From Rolexman’s excellent take down it is clear that in the ultimate version one never sees the true cannon pinion but rather just a cap that is part of the min hand. Believe it or not that is what bothers me about the ultimate rep. I like the movement but any visual issues with the cannon pinion drives me crazy. On my gen 112 the min hand was sitting just a little too high and I was tempted to fix it over and over…anyway, my question (finally) is if the noob version uses special hands or just the typical higher pinion?
  16. thanks auto....not sure why it makes me feel better that other people had same crazy experiences....but for some reason it does..Looks like this seller is taking a hit over at WUS..So sometimes just takes time for sanity to take a hold of the situation.
  17. Its just amazing how you can do 100s of deals and always do something extra and all it takes is one person to mess with you.
  18. just picked up a cheap Russian watch for 65 (usd) over at WUS. It arrived in good shape but stopped randomly. So, no huge deal it just needs a cleaning at least. So, I write the seller and say, watch needs a cleaning it isn't working and I know, my hobby is watch making. The sellers sends me a long email about how to wind and set a watch! Ok, so I just give up and say I'll eat the 65 and toss it on my watch table and fix it some day. THEN!!! the seller writes up a negative review posting my emails and even poking fun at my writing style (I use too many commas). So,,,,for some reason this is really bothering me...I've bought and hundreds of watches and this one experience really makes me mad...I eat it and this seller writes me my first negative review over 65 bucks??? Things like this make me want to just stop buying and selling....or maybe I need to come back here and just buy reps? at least you people are sane (for the most part)
  19. thanks rollie...I've tried that over and over again.....perhaps I have the wrong stem? when I push the stem back into it...the yoke always slips from the castle wheel...I've tried both in time setting and in winding..the weird thing is the the stem seems to be correct...it all fits perfect if I take it out of the movement and directly place it on the stem..
  20. I took a break from the unitas to work on a few molnijas. I really like this movement but I'm starting to recall my issues with it which is all about the keyless works. Getting the stem to fit into the keyless works seems like a huge undertaking. The problem is that the sliding pinion is too small and the yoke slips out of the grove when you try to reinsert the stem. Now, I know one should remove the stem in the time setting position so minimize this, but i'm still getting this even in the time setting position...and this is with a well oiled stem. And each time the yoke slips out....I have to remove the hands,,,,etc....and start over. I put a unitas sliding pinion (I've read this is also called a castle wheel) in to see how this fits and it actually fits perfectly...but the gears don't line up on the setting wheel and winding pinion. This seems like a flaw in design but on the other hand..its a popular movement so it must be something I'm doing wrong. I have a cool project,,,its almost done...any advice would be appreciated.
  21. UTS,,,anonimo and Tourby as the night progresses....one advantage of being home is switching watches a few times......
  22. had some time over break to work on this...came out nice IMO but needs work,,,,I need to finish the balance.....I put in a cheap one for the time being....just too see how it looks....As you can see the dial is difficult....I had to do this by touch and in some places went down to the brass...If I was a pro...would just send the whole thing out for re plating...but I'm not....
  23. can always find a swiss 6497 for around 200 (usd) and exchange the movement...This is the same basic movement that panerai uses,,,,at least they start with this.....actually read some of the models even had plain,,unfinished unitas movements in them and customers were furious.....For under 200 could have sense that its at least a swiss movement.....
