Still modding that Speedy eh? (sorry don't know the answer)

That's yet another moral of this thread

Movement, Caseback = GENUINE Dial = REDIAL Case, Bezel, Crystal = CRAPPY REP

Nothing worse than a ugly looking bloke who at first glance looks like an even uglier woman - step forward Rui Costa, Pippo Inzaghi (the cheating rat-faced git ), Ronaldinho and (even though I feel bad about this) Yossi Benayoun. Aaah, Kinder Surprise. You know I always wondered if the 'Surprise' name referred to surprise of joy at discovering the hidden toy inside the egg or whether (the more likely explanation) it was the unwelcome surprise in your mouth when you actually tasted the vomit-inducing soap-flavoured 'chocolate' Explains a LOT. No really. By the way, in what fantasy dreamland did you come to think Stan Collymore played for you lot? C'mon, I hadn't forgotten - you referred to him as ex-Spurs earlier, you don't get off that easily
-
I'm betting you wouldn't tease him about his 'girly' ponytail to his face now would ya Ape? hey you, yah you vith the fish....I keeeel you!

I shall ditto that and raise a glass

Dear Father Nanuq and Brother Euno, You guys know I'm a vintage GMT guy through and through, right? But just lately I've also been having impure thoughts about a modern GMT. Yes, it has a (*gulp*) sapphire crystal. I know I should feel ashamed but I can't help it. I keep seeing it, and the other week I actually got to touch it - it's ceramic insert and chunky case are hard to resist, even the spring-loaded clasp gets me even though I know it's the Devils' handiwork. Is it too late? What can I do to stop it? Is there any salvation for me? Apart from selling one of my kidneys to buy that 6542 that is?

Oh don't worry, they're on their way, with a nice thorazine and haloperidol cocktail for our friend here

Talking of COMEX, I love that diver's quote....you know the one who said that most commercial divers would not wear them in the water, to the extent that the watches were cynically renamed as "CabinDwellers" But what got me (in the sense) was the fact that these guys say they were led to believe that these COMEX 5514s were somehow inferior to "proper" Rolex's - a perception that led to many of these watches changing hands in bars and poker games for as little as $100!!!
-
Hmmm, now THERE's an IDEA!!! Delta >>>> Mwahahahaha........
-
Heh heh, something like that Nah, your baby's safe (for now ) - just don't want you getting too comfy there you avaricious swine, you

Worth a try Bob, but there may be a new vulture circling that particular carcass (no, not me, just thanks to me) Take it your Sector/Fortis duo didn't sell on TZ then? BTW, my dream rare vintage.... 1972 DRSD
-
I'd ask them outright. Fine if they've pulled it from sale then that's their right to do so, but would still want to know about that dial. For your own sanity if nothing else
-
That as well
-
Yeah, but that new (2006)? My instinct tells me it's not 'right'.
-
OK well this is interesting. Like all GMTs from the 6542 onwards, the 16710 is an officially certified (COSC-rated in modern times) chronometer. Fact. Lack of precedent or not, there's no logical or rationale reason for the dial (and by inference, the movement) to be rated as a chronometer without the addendum of official certification. Contrary to popular belief not all Rolex movts submitted pass COSC inspection, but those that fail are sent back time and ime again until they pass, like the bar exam if you like. COSC-rating is for marketing purposes only nothing to do with accuracy as such. So there's no way Rolex would highlight the fact on a dial unless. Even the non-COSC movt used in say the 14060M (no-date Sub) has recently been upgraded and had BOTH lines of text added to its dial accordingly. My advice? Crack the caseback to see what's in there. And get a 10x or 25x loupe to take a good closeup look at the dial.

Footix? Oh that cockerel thing with the Asterix moniker? Could be worse you could have that German lion thing that looked like it had a nasty case of the mange.....and consequently sent the toy company that produced it bankrupt it was so unpopular Oh and Spain are one of the Big Five European countries/markets - that's all I meant. Hey, not like I can't multi-task....as long as I can see the TV in the background
-
Let's not forget my first (and probably best) WC - Spain '82 - the little squeezy orange mascot, Naranjito Worrying definitely. But still, rude to turn down a proposition I always say, so I'll go with 'your' place. Although you might find it hard to gain my attention should there be womens' beach volleyball on the TV
-
Thought you'd drool at that, but look, no matte dial and it wasn't a faded Pepsi insert OK time to spill the beans since I've noticed....wow.....this is in fact my 2000th post Don't worry though, no musings on the meaning of life for me I sort of gave it away at the end there although it was worth it if only to prove even Nanuq's expertise can sometimes be fooled - crack for WIS's indeed So this is what I gave you... And then showed you a 'Sophia' GMT, much more believable. Notice the similarity? Well, these two are actually the SAME MODEL, SAME YEAR!!! 16760 - GMTII first series, 1983 - yep that's right folks no 'DATE' after "OYSTER PERPETUAL' Not used to seeing that are we? Still a slight difference in dial text font though, even within the same year, you just have to ignore the contrasting conditions of both. All the pieces shown here are GENUINE. But they are almost unheard of and some detail or other will just look wrong to most peoples' eyes. The moral of this thread is therefore this - there is NO right or wrong and never assume anything. No matter what you think you know, Rolex will just kick you in the backside every time. Their approach to the evolution of their models and parts/service swapouts just beggars belief . Unbelievably haphazard and amateurish, something like this perhaps... "...hey Siegfried, I neet unt dial for zis GMT....vhat do you av in your drawer?.... (*sounds of rummaging about, bits being discarded*) "....oh ok, zat looks like it vill fit, who care novone vill know anyhows...danke mein heren." "Siegfried vat is dial you geev me? You see it von't feet. For moment lend me file, eh?" (*sounds of a vice and a flat file being worked around a dial*) "Darn, look Siegfried, a ring is come off. Ah vell, we take dem ALL off now! Hand me pliers please" Hope you enjoyed this trail of breadcrumbs - for me, this is exactly what makes vintage Rolex such fun. cheers Doc

Serves you right you greedy bastard!!! Mwahahah...... Delta - you're also being a greedy bastard I notice another nicely aged addition to the vintage family just this afternoon
-
Ah, unfair advantage again - we've talked about your GMT before haven't we? Didn't I find that confirmation on an identical piece? (do you have that thread link by chance?) But actually Nanuq's piece is not the same as this in any aspect, model, age etc. So WHAT is it? Rep, franken or gen? Another clue or red herring (you decide ) - anyone notice the datefont?
-
Really, you think so? What like THIS "Sophia" (Loren) you mean? Think again
-
A head-scratcher indeed, like all of these - combine the GMT Master II marking with a vintage trashed case, the bezel edge, the bleached insert (hmm, now is that blue or black? ), the dial markings, all makes one wonder..... Anyone have an idea what the moral of this thread is yet???
