  1. Setting the incorrect hand stack GMT ETA style 2836 movement This movement was designed as a day date movement by ETA and has been modified with a GMT function by adding an extra GMT hand under the hour hand. Driven from the day/date drive. The main function of a GMT is the ability to view Greenwich mean time (or any other time zone you wish) on your wrist and also your local time, this function is most useful today for travellers who wish to know what time it is at home in comparison to where they are, I found this function useful for avoiding phoning home at 4 in the morning rather then 4 in the afternoon when overseas. Originally the need to know GMT came from the needs of sailors and navigators in order to ascertain Longitude, for more on this subject a visit to the Maritime Museum in Greenwich London would be useful and I also recommend the film Longitude with stars such as Jeremy Irons and Michael Gambon to name but two. A full explanation can be found on wikipedia and a small exert is here, for UTC read GMT. “Longitude at a point may be determined by calculating the time difference between that at its location and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Since there are 24 hours in a day and 360 degrees in a circle, the sun moves across the sky at a rate of 15 degrees per hour (360°/24 hours = 15° per hour). So if the time zone a person is in is three hours ahead of UTC then that person is near 45° longitude (3 hours × 15° per hour = 45°). The word near was used because the point might not be at the center of the time zone; also the time zones are defined politically, so their centers and boundaries often do not lie on meridians at multiples of 15°. In order to perform this calculation, however, a person needs to have a chronometer (watch) set to UTC and needs to determine local time by solar observation or astronomical observation. So now we know what it is useful for how do we set the watch. For this explanation I will be referring to turning the crown clockwise and anti clockwise, by looking directly at the face of the crown you will see which is which. This movement has a 3 position crown that means that from is fully depressed or rest position (unscrewed on a screw down case) it will be in position 1 this is the winding position (it is not recommended to hand wind the 2824/36 ETA style movements due to the fragility of the winding mechanism, better to rock the watch in your hand so that the rotor its self will wind the main spring a little to get the movement going then wear the watch) If we were to wind the watch in this position it we would have to turn the crown clock wise. I wish to set the date, time and GMT indicator to 2nd of the month 1500hrs or 3:00pm central European time and the GMT showing GMT (1400) For the next two setting I always first pull the crown to the third position and set the time to 6 am to ensure that the date change mechanism is fully disengaged this will become apparent later why* Position 2 is with the crown pulled out to the first click. This is the date and GMT set position. In order to set the date we turn the crown clockwise and the date wheel will quick change to the date you want, I always go to the date before the one I want Main Hands should now be showing 0600 date 01 GMT at whatever I will now pull the crown to position 3 and wind the main hands forward through 12midnight where the date will change to 02 and I can set the time to 1500hrs or 3:00pm CET. This is the reason we set the date to the date before to ensure that we know that the time is set to AM or PM and to ensure that the date will change close to midnight and not midday Main hands now showing 1500hrs or 3:00pm CET date 02 GMT whatever If we now push in the crown back to position 2 (it may be easier to push back to position one and them back out to 2) we can now turn the crown anti clockwise moving the GMT hand the the required position of 1400hrs (7 o'clock on the main dial) Main hands now showing 1500hrs or 3:00pm CET date 02 GMT 1400hrs GMT The crown can now be depressed to position 1 and screwed down if required, The watch will now show local time (for me in central Europe) And GMT being read from the GMT hand using the outer bezel. I hope you find this interesting and understandable PS the film longitude is available to down load as a torrent via isohunt.com
  2. how big a difference are we talking On dial up or down the pinions are only dealing with the friction from the jewels on one end, if you have a movement that is massively different between dial up and dial down then i would start to look at the jewels and pinions to see if something is amiss. I think?? pretty sure though, and the rolex movement is not a lot different in its basic technology from any other mechanical movement
  3. This story was originaly related to me by a military padre at a service in the field and it has a moral attached, I will add the moral at the end. The Moral is just because something has always been don that way does not mean it always has to be!
  4. A hurricane came unexpectedly. The ship went down and was lost. A man found himself swept up on the shore of an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing. Only bananas and coconuts. Used to 5-star hotels, this young executive had no idea what to do, so for the next four months he ate bananas, drank coconut juice and longed for his old life and fixed his gaze on the sea, hoping to spot a rescue ship. One day, as he was lying on the beach, he spotted movement out of the corner of his eye. It was a rowboat, and in it was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. She rowed up to him and in disbelief, he asked her: "Where did you come from? How did you get here?" "I rowed from the other side of the island," she said. "I landed here when my cruise ship sank." "Amazing," he said. "I didn't know anyone else had survived. How many are there? You were lucky to have a rowboat wash up with you." "Only me here, "she said, "and the rowboat didn't wash up; nothing did." He was confused. "Then how did you get the rowboat?" "Oh, simple, " replied the woman. "I made the rowboat out of materials that I found on the island. The oars were whittled from Gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm branches and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree." "B-B-But that's impossible," stuttered the man. "You had no tools or hardware. How did you manage?" "Oh, that was no problem," replied the woman. "On the other side of the island there is a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock exposed. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgable ductile iron. I used that for tools, and used the tools to make the hardware. But enough of that," she said. "Where do you live?" Sheepishly and rather embarrassed, he confessed that he had been sleeping on the beach the whole time. "Well, let's row over to my place, then," she said. After a few minutes of rowing she docked the boat at a small wharf. As the man looked to the shore he nearly fell out of the boat. Before him was a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman tied the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man could only stare ahead, dumb struck. As they walked into the house, she said casually, "It's not much, but I call it home. Sit down, please; would you like a drink?" "No, no thank you," he said, still dazed. "I can't take any more coconut juice." "It's not coconut juice," the woman replied. "I have a still. How about a Pina Colada?" Trying to hide his amazement, the man accepted, and they sat down on her couch to talk. After they had exchanged their stories, the woman announced, "I'm going to slip into something comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom." No longer questioning anything, the man went into the bathroom. There in the cabinet was a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge were fastened onto it's end inside a swivel mechanism. "This woman is amazing," he mused. "What next?" When he returned, she greeted him wearing nothing but vine leaves - strategically positioned - and smelling faintly of gardenias. She beckoned for him to sit down next to her. "Tell me, " she began, suggestively, sliding closer to him, "we've been out here for a very long time. You've been lonely. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something you've been longing for all these months. You know..." She stared into his eyes. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "You mean--?" he replied...... "You mean huh.....I can check my e-mail from here?"

  7. Look at the numbers on the subdials! 7 days and 12 hours faux chrono
  8. Wearing one of these today but the one i have on has a custom movement fitted
  9. Well i would expect a power reserve of 35hrs or above from the asian 21j movement fitted, but that is if it is fully wound, and that depends on how active you are, I can normal fully wind any auto watch after about an 15 min of good porn. now how you should lay it down i refer you to a piece of info that rolex used to give out with their watch a few years ago i hope this helps I required i have a list of recommended watch winding material
  10. yes it could be repped and powered by a unitas style movement, basiacaly what you have is a big date mech but rather than changing every day it changes every min and then another wheel that changes every hour, the technology is the same as for a date wheel. I have a plan for my next watch to attach disks rather than hands and run them past a window in a raised dial, this would be sweeping rather than jumping but it is something i am working on in the design section of my mind
  11. Welcome Crab fond any thing interesting yet? WTF i tell you what if i saw that trying to get at my garbage i would shxt my self Then get my gun and see how hard the shell was, is that for real i mean do they really do that?????
