that review has been around for years and like (i think The Zigmeister?) said "that's just the start of the argument i do know that if i had a dime for every watch forum argument that article has started i could probably buy a new SS daytona!!!

honestly i disagree i really love the sinn 656, but think it's overpriced for a basic eta pilots watch. a good quality eta rep could be made 99%+ and sell in the $200 range vs $700 plus for a gen. i also do not buy reps that are way out of the range that i could possibly afford. me wearing a $10,000 or $20,000 or $50,000 watch is absurd. i have a very good job and have been there for 18 years and if i only wanted to own one or two watches could afford the gen of any rep i have but very few people in the newspaper business can afford a $50,000 watch... i have to wonder if that's why the best reps are of 'mid' price watches (rolex, breitling, omega, iwc)? because most people feel the same way and know they could 'pull off' an SMP or a sub. and why the reps of $50,000 and up watches generally are lower quality and less accurate and don't sell as well?

I wish!!! I would be all over a 656 myself

A friend was up visiting for Christmas and my ex and I met her for coffee. Along with my ex's pet rat Ruby (they really are great pets and she is a sweet little pocket dog) So Julie sent pics and this one struck me as funny. Probably the only pic ever taken that includes a 5218-201a and a rat

holy crap!!!!!!! i have to agree with neil 100% i took my seiko maine master 300m diver with the 8L35 movement (the same as used in grand seiko's and credors but without decoration) to a local watchmaker who has worked on rolex for years and he was amazed at the quality and fit and finish of the movement. grand seikos and credors etc do have that cachet in asian markets, just not in the us. a pity for us! if you do a little research you will discover that not only has seiko been around longer than rolex and been much more of an innovator, but seiko has always produced 100% of their product in-house including mainsprings and lubricants and batteries for quartz watches. 100%. here's a shot of come cheap japanese eye candy...

You Wake Up One Day And All The Rep Dealers Are Gone!

i don't spend that much time on candlepower.com but i do have 8-10 good lights and another half dozen small led's. oh and bicycle lights. and a couple surefires that are dedicated to firearms not like a real collection! -
nine posts and pretty much every one was written in a demanding and antagonistic tone... looks like The Zigmeister is an ace at diagnosing more than just movements that need work

You Wake Up One Day And All The Rep Dealers Are Gone!
longshot replied to elprimerozen's topic in General Discussion
i collected seiko's for a long time. mostly vintage divers and chronos and am still active there and own quite a few. same with military watches on MWR, and the dive watch lagoon that ty runs is a great forum. then there would be making sure all the reps i have are serviced and waterproofed and modded where practical. plus i collect knives and flashlights and... i would miss it but get over it before too long -
i've had a couple 'eta' movement reps serviced and even parts replaced by a local watchmaker and he has taken parts off of 'parts' genuine watch 'swiss eta' movements that dropped right in. he has never suggested that the eta movements in the watches i've bought from joshua and andrew were somehow not eta.

i have an older pam036 and would be willing to bet it's titanium. i have a lot of experience with titanium in high end bicycle parts and quality knives and have been wearing a ti wedding band for 17 years and the 036 has all the qualities of ti as far as i can see. its also lighter than my 111 with the same size case, movement, display back. ti itself is not expensive. it's an extremely common mineral. in the days of the old soviet union it was used to make shovels and hand tools! but it is generally more difficult to work with (particularly welding) than steel. that accounts for a lot of the cost difference in things like bicycles. ti also comes in almost 30 grades/different alloys. in bicycles and knives you tend to get 3al/2-5v or in very high end stuff 6al/4v. i doubt if our reps are made of either of those alloys and have often wondered what grade they are made of? but if you buy a ti pam rep from one of our good dealers you should be confident you are getting 'real' titanium alloy

i agree completely. in fact i would venture to say it's just not possible for the rolex movement in a sub to weigh twice what an eta 2824/2836 weighs. there are a certain number of parts in a self winding date movement with a center seconds, plus or minus maybe a few. unless the rolex movement is solid gold or depleted uranium (eek!) there is just not enough space in the case for additional mass to double the weight. period. until someone shows me a chart in grams of the weight of a rolex movement and an equal size eta with the rolex weighing twice as much i'll chalk this up to urban wis legend

it looks awesome! wear it in good health

funny, so is mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i messaged the seller in case he did not know and he ignored me. big surprise...

wow! thanks for sharing that rob a cool thing once done cannot be un-done!

personally if i ever buy a bb it will be from josh or andrew. i maybe know a little more about this saga than average from an email conversation with josh, but mainly i would buy from them because they both have always treated me well on every rep sale! i also find the whole concept of a limited edition rep absurd. limited edition marketing is driven by hard core collectors. we have been told repeatedly that the forum collectors represent a tiny fraction of the rep market. that statement makes economic sense and i believe it to be true. so when the average rep buyer looks at a row of watches the and bb is double an iwc or smp chrono i can't see the whole "it's a limited edition" argument having much impact. the rep makers will squeeze every dime or yuan or euro they can out of this project. panerai can make a few very minor changes to a watch and make 500 or 1000 and charge a limited edition premium because they have a well heeled collectors market. the rep makers don't
-
i agree. they spent what, $9000 for a genuine to take apart and then all the time and effort. they are going to sell every one they can sell and make as much money as possible... if they get under $300 i'm in
-
that statement is more tasteless than that watch. and bigoted and ignorant. i have dozens of gay friends. my sister is gay. we most likely have gay members here. do you also believe that all african americans are lazy and all asians are good students and all jews are cheats? not funny regardless of the number of smilies. just offensive and juvenile...

for a (very) short time i owned an omega smp full size in quartz. i had a watchmaker friend open the caseback and the eta quartz movement was a tiny plastic thing not much bigger than the battery sitting in a huge plastic spacer ring that took up 80% or more of the case volume seiko on the other hand not only introduced the first quartz watch and the first quartz 1/100th second chronograph (a 15 jewel beauty used in the RAF seikos) but the first quartz specifically designed with a higher torque motor to move larger heavier hands with more lume and with a 5 year battery life so that it would not have to be opened as often and re-sealed i have two variants of this full size 7 jewel all metal movement. a 7549 in the 600m professional (the first production titanium dive watch and first quartz professional dive watch) and a 7548 in a franken i had built in a 6309 divers case.

i would almost swear the one i saw was vintage and possibly a comex?

someone posted a pic on (i think?) tz a couple years ago of a genuine lefty sub. it was one of only one or two, i think, ever made in the 1970's? wish i could remember more

personally i think a line of anonimo reps would be far, far more popular that the u-boat line. simple to rep and a huge amount of crossover with pam owners in the geuine world plus they really seem to have the same sort of cachet that pam has: http://www.anonimo.com/

i have the SS version and the bezel was loose and felt crappy when i got it. i sent it to The Zigmeister for a re-lume and he did something to the bezel (at my request) and now it feels awesome! so it is possible to tighten it up

uh, that's new years weekend and while i will be in sf reps and watches will be the farthest thing from my mind

I so want another one of these. It's great size and very subdued for a dive watch! But the last one I had (white dial/gold hands) the 12:00 markers were horrible and ruined the look of the whole watch. I've emailed a couple dealers about hand selecting one and also have to wonder, if they are just glued on if a good modder could remove and correct them if I got a bad one?
