  1. Congrats! that is indeed one happy ending
  2. Mary has these on her web site. Use her search for model number FM0066 . I went nuts for Gran's watch a few months ago and got it from her .. that's how I know I'm pleased to note that the caseback says Long Island and not Casablanca like so many Long Island reps do
  3. I absolutely agree. You replace Asia 21j movements, not fix them.
  4. Right. He's had to disassemble the watch to insert the datewheel. And in re-assembling the piece you can be assured he takes the utmost care, unlike normal rep factory workers. He's able to eyeball the movement since he has it out of the watch as well. See where I'm going with this? What's this procedure commonly called? A datewheel mod. It's a modded watch with careful assembly by someone who gives a crap.
  5. Comparing BK's watch and the Trevor version is apples to oranges. BK sells a modded watch .. that's why it costs so much more money. You can't really compare a piece from a modder with a piece straight from the factory.
  6. As far as I am aware, the trusted dealers here all have the Noobfactory dssd, except Trevor. I suspect that small "shopper" dealers like Watch International might be able to source the Trevor watch as well. Just be sure to confirm this via QC pics before you take delivery.
  7. You would need to open the case back, and use really sharp tweezers to pick the screw out of the movement. Then use a little screw driver to put the rotor screw back into place. Contact your seller immediately and tell them the watch rotor is banging around inside the case, and the movement is jammed by the loose screw. See if they will partially pay for a local repair OR take the watch back for exchange.
  8. It is extremely common for the winding rotor to come off inside a watch when it ships. It is only held on by the smallest screw you can imagine. You are probably hearing the rotor rattling around in the case, and I bet the loose screw is caught in the gears, making the time setting trouble you describe.
  9. Is your friend certain it's solid gold? The most common kind of watch you're going to see in that era from Elgin is a rose gold filled "25 Year" case .. guaranteed 25 years against the gold plate rubbing off. I have one as well with a fabulous 3-finger bridge and china white dial with silver Fleur d'lis embossed around it. I think I overpaid a little @ $400
  10. Mm hm .. I guess this particular Asia movement (working power reserve at 12, and seconds at 6) has no hacking function. My MM Diver has no hack as well. It takes 1000 rotations to wind this monster! I think it's a 40 hour power reserve.
  11. Oh my GOSH ... Rolex watches don't make ticking sounds? This could be the most intensely researched article ever in the history of the Internets !!
  12. I could swear I've seen members here break theirs accidentally while replacing all those bad |10 | inserts .. so yeah .. I would have to say that the DSSD reps we buy have ceramic bezels. Mine certainly felt ceramic when I had it in my hands.
  13. Nice! The spot of AR coating under the cyclops is the only tell that I can pick out. I might have to take Noobfactory up on their sale event on this watch before it's gone.
  14. Once, when I was polishing my DSSD with Cape Cod cloth, the chemicals in the cloth got in behind the insert and dissolved the adhesive. It looked like rubber cement. There was no tape in there. I have a mid-2009 original v5. (not noob/cartel)
  15. Have you PM'd Spinmaster? He builds custom Daytonas. Not inexpensive, tho. You can search up his old sales threads here. Ahh ... wait ... I just looked, myself, and all his sales posts are gone .. and he hasn't been posting since June.
  16. Lani is back (sporadically) and would be the man to ask about this, since this is his thread!
  17. Congrats on a beautiful watch. You make very good points about the tiny things wrong with each popular version. Nice pics too! Oh, this watch was wildly popular 18 months to a year ago, and there are How To articles regarding taking one apart. Look for posts by Gioarmani from early last year on this. He was the forum DSSD expert until he pretty much vanished.
  18. Oh I didnt mean you personally. I mean the reps ... not a lot to argue over ... each one has a couple of faults. One has a dial problem and one has a bezel insert problem.
  19. There was a post on the 11th comparing a Gen DSSD to the Trevor DSSD. You can see how close it is in the beautiful DSLR photos the member posted .. And again, the Noobfactory/BK/Cartel model only has small problems .. and the Trevor watch only has small problems. Nothing to start an argument over
  20. Thank you for reminding ... I had missed that he was looking at the clone eta watch.
  21. Trevor has a better dial and Noobfactory has better insert thickness and pearl finishing. You can't just say one's definitively better. Sorry concepta .. I guess you could say they are equal in their slight imperfections. I think the Trevor watch is a better choice because you can shave the bottom of the insert and finish the pearl .. you can't shave the hour markers on a noob dial.
