Went to a watch show this weekend......
ubiquitous replied to jfreeman420's topic in General Discussion
Quite possible that it was a 'fake' in the sense that frankensteins are considered fakes. Obtaining the parts to make that watch would not be too difficult; I've seen quite a few vintage case sets with dials, hands etc. for sale- All one would need is to drop in the correct period movement for a nice frankenstein made from genuine parts. Not really fake, per se, but also doesn't have the claim to genuine in terms of provenance, etc. either. Maybe more appropriately a grey market watch in the truest sense, and still avoided by dealers and collectors due to their origin and lack of pedigree... -
Started with gens and dabbled a bit in reps. When I started getting into frankens, I stopped buying gens altogether (with the only exception being my vintage Omega SM300).

Secs@ 3:00 cause it's a destro; they would normally be at 9:00, but with the case and movement being upside down, it places them at 3:00 instead

This thing has been on my wrist non-stop...

Excellent pics and a gorgeous movement! The Valjoux 7734 is a very nice caliber...

What nice happened to you today or lately ?
ubiquitous replied to Stephane's topic in The looney bin
How could I have missed this thread?! Let's see... What nice thing happened to me recently... Well... This is an easy one, and applies for every day, really... I wake up next to a beautiful woman that I love dearly... And I get to see the gorgeous smiles on the faces of my kids. To me... That is really all I need in life... And that is everything that I could ever ask for -
My El Primero Daytonas are going into the safety deposit box now that I've found some new watches to wear as daily beaters... All my other watches I can rebuild/repurchase for the most part, but this pair (even though they are frankens) have special value and meaning to me, hence will get the special treatment...

I can't say that I'm the biggest (modern) Breitling fan...
ubiquitous replied to ubiquitous's topic in The Breitling Area
Honestly... I'm not sure... I haven't cracked it open yet to inspect, so I can't definitively say. If it's not the 2824, I have a few to choose from in my box o' spares to transplant, so not too worried either way Indeed... I'll need to try it on both the leather and the rubber. I'm still a bit unsure about how I will like the rubber strap... But I guess there's no way to know until I give it a shot It's a fascinating piece... And a bit different to my usual rep-itoire. The actual case is a bit slimmer than the Ti Seawolf from what I recall; the Ti was a monstrous piece... But oh so light. I basically got this piece on a whim. Wasn't really looking to get one of these to begin with, and it wasn't any cash out of my pocket either. Of all the watches in my collection, I wear 3 of them at most. The rest just sit in the box, and this one will most likely join those... -
Please suggest some nice men's watches for a woman
ubiquitous replied to dangerman's topic in General Discussion
Wife at one time had a PAM49 (actually it started as a 51 rep)... Just too bulky for her.... She was always smacking it against walls, door jambs, etc... It's a fun watch though... As strap changing meant versatile looks for daily wear... -
George, I did notice this on mine... But it's only very slightly angled and not very obvious unless I'm really examining it at an angle. I do love this watch... One of my top favorites! No doubt about that...

Please suggest some nice men's watches for a woman
ubiquitous replied to dangerman's topic in General Discussion
Occassionally, my wife will wear: 16520 Daytona (color depending on her apparel selection for the day) 6265 Daytona (at 37mm with a 19mm bracelet, this one fits her wrist nicely) 37mm Patek Nautilus (another great watch for her wrist as it's very thin at 8mm and wears much smaller than it's 37mm size might suggest) But usually, she's wearing her DJ rep- I got her the rep first to see how she would like it prior to buying her a new gen. After having owned it for over a year, it keeps great time, and has sustained quite a lot of wear and tear as it's a daily wearer for the most part. I suggested to her that we get the, but she declined as she is quite happy with the one she has... -
But I must say that I am rather impressed with this SuperOcean Steelfish I rec'd yesterday! I got this on a trade for some parts... And I chose this one for grins. I have some friends who are really into bigger watches, and so I thought if anything, I could make it a nice gift. So... When I received this watch, I wasn't sure what to really expect. I've seen the reviews of it, which all suggest it to be a very high quality piece- That much I wasn't worried about- But what I was interested in seeing was how big this watch would be, as I'm familiar with most modern Breitlings to be rather big (the last watch I had was an old school Ti Seawolf Avenger with gen dial.... That thing was comically huge on my wrist. I describe it as being akin to a roll of duct tape sitting on top of my wrist ). So... Taking this watch out of the box... It's big... But not HUGE like I was expecting. Seems to wear about the same (to me) as most 44mm PAMs (though I think the SOSF is 42mm; I haven't measured, so Breitling folks can [please] correct me here if I am wrong). The quality, as expected from prior excellent reviews is very well executed. Nice, solid case with some heft and presence... Good detail on the dial.... Bracelet is nice and adjustable- Very comfortable; I rec'd a genuine rubber strap with mine, though I think I'll keep it on bracelet for now. Not much else to say about this watch that hasn't been covered before... It's a neat watch, and I'll probably hang onto it just for the coolness factor. Will I wear it? I dunno... Onto some pics (which I apologize for... They turned out to be a little darker than expected)... Thanks for looking! R

Alain Silberstein le perpetuel anniversaire
ubiquitous replied to cleobis's topic in Other Brands Area
Alain Silberstein is quite an interesting brand; maybe not to everyone's taste, but I do appreciate their funky-ness. Only complaint that I have- I have a difficult time trying to read the time with those hands... But as an art deco kind of piece, it's an interesting design. -
Nah...think I'll wait for the wristwatch version ;)

Awesome! I'm going to have an OJ Simpson limited edition clock made and sell it for TONS on eBay! -
Hasn't left my wrist since I got it...

Gentlemen; if I may call upon your wisdom....
ubiquitous replied to Qsub's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Not to digress too much, but just something I occassionally find amusing... It's funny how metric is the widely used method of measurement for the majority of the world, yet STANDARD (which, by the name would imply the standard) is only really used in the U.S. Don't mind me... I'm just talking out loud... -

For the tube, you'll need p/n 24-7030. -
The color of the movement may indicate the origin from which it was produced or assembled, which may be of benefit to overall QC, though aside from that, there's really no upside. The color of the movement or plating does not offer any functional benefit to the movement.

Picked this one up for very little about a year ago... All original from 1967. One of my favorites, and one of the only gens I have kept...

Voted for the Omega...

To my fellow members in the US observing Memorial Day... Just a short message and reminder... Please take a moment to think of our soldiers fighting for our freedom, and for those who have made sacrifices; no matter what your views are on the war or what your stance is on politics... Just a thought... Or a prayer... Regards, R

Sorry to hear about your situation... Though it's difficult to say if your experience is considered 'normal', per se; some dealers have excellent communication pre/post sale, while some don't. Have you rsearched Collector reviews on this individual? That may or may not provide further insight to your situation...

Bob.... Amazing... Simply amazing... Worth a small fortune.... Though the sentimental value of that one is something you just can't put a price on. A very special watch.... All the best, R
