Trusty Time Quality Review of the Planet Ocean 42mm
PeteM replied to KingBach's topic in General Discussion
It may help to understand what your issues are and if they are overly critical in rep terms if you were to post pics of your issues that you state... A missing screw is something that can happen and isnt a biggie in my book but is annoying... my dealer would just send me more if needed..but most screws can be sourced with a little research or WTBs ...again its annoying but not a big issue as such.. The bezel issue is more subjective and can be an issue to certain guys and to others not so much.. but are you sure you bought what you thought you were intent on buying ? I am honestly not so sure you did reading your expectation relative to your comments... I am not trying to dismiss your concerns mate but i think you have fallen into a common noob trap/pitfall... I will explain further down.. if I am judging this wrong then generally You tend to find putting aside the flaws etc.. That you need to check comments from guys who bought these and see if there are any consistent issues or qulaity failings... this can depend on the maker as some makers are better at quality than others... it can also depend on the dealer and his own QC checks ...and in course of that how they respond to resolving it... it can also be the quality of the pics and any QC pics hould always be treated with a sense of scepticism... ie if you know there may be issues with the bezel pearl and the angles of the watch in the pics seem to avoid showing the full detail or the lighting is oversaturated etc ..in that case it is worth asking for another pic even if you aint sure whjat you are asking for... It also helps to ask the specific question if you cant judge it for yourself... and of course if you aint so sure you can ask for help from individual members or by posting the concern with a pic that you have... You can then be certain to know if any issues that arise when you recieve and see the watch in your hand are what you might have expected as a rep and not a quality issue.. Buying the better movement of a watch which has versions with several movement options doesnt mean the quality with the rest of the watch is any different from say the Asian movement version... The watches themselves will be exactly the same barring the movement.. However this is where you should be careful as the description might suggest the watches are exactly the same but they could be different makers... or different versions The POs are made by several makers...now if i recall this right ...the best versions out of the POs are the noob makers version.... and if that is true then you have bought something else as Andrew and Josh do not sell Noob makers watches... because of a disagreement..in turn Angus say does not sell H makers ... So you may have seen a guys thread with his PO latest version but what you have bought would be another makers rep not the noob... so unless you know who sells what when you are buying a rep you can easily buy a different makers version... or an old version etc etc Therefore the rep you bought may well be to the standard that is known across the forums (barring screw) so if you searched this makers PO ..you might have found that the bezel or pearl issue is reported by guys..however if you were reading about the Noob PO and you mistakenly bought the H makers then that would explain your disappointment with the watch... The latest better ceramic POs in 42 coming out so far are the Noobs as far as I know mate... I would think your disappointment is more based on your misunderstanding of the best versions and what you get when you go Swiss ... If that is as I suspect true then you need to do a little more research or at least understand how to research in this hobby .... and I would refer you to the intros and guides for new members and the other threads that would also be useful to you is the 'How things work in the rep world' ...Angus posted these long explanations in his Puretime section in the TD section. It gives you a perspective from the dealers side and common misconceptions including explanations of the use of Versions and makers etc. -
I knew we could never disagree but can always disagree to agree or anything we might disagree about agreeing... is always worth being agreeable about Makers do still produce Swiss Valjoux reps but they are few and far between... a recent example was the 243..but there are some that can be got But even if you bought swiss..which i would never do myself.. from a dealer...it is just as likely to have issues as an Asian and that is assuming what you get is actually a full swiss movemnet and not a hybrid of parts put together or just a flat out fake swiss.. Even the so called gens on the bay etc are just if not more likely to be full of issues as any asian... The key in all cases is to get a service and follow the dos and donts.... Oh and be creful who you get to do the service...I aint joking or digging about Mike now I genyuinely mean that.. I had a watch I bought on RWI that a guy got serviced by a professsional watchsmith unrelated to this forum... he completely f*cked it up ..he lost parts, used glue over oiled etc etc and charged a £160 for the privilege ! That guy sold me that watch as a serviced A7750 and innocently so...but the watch was completely f*cked !! I think the member in question still thinks that I was over playing the issues not that I benefitted from saying it... but it shows how much trust you can misplace in a watchsmith just by not understanding the basics of buying a service or product... Who you get to do the service is very important..I do not mean whether you get the watch back or kept for months..I just mean someone who not ony can service it but also who will use all his skill and diligence to do a good job... you can get the best most professional watchsmith around but he might be an alcoholic or just lazy or may have no respect for a rep...then you get it done and later it goes wrong..all the guy has to do is say well its a rep !! Someone like Domi or Le Wiz dont do it like that..if it goes wromng a few months later they take it back and sort it no questions asked.. Plus you get guys selling thier reps with chronos... guys buying just ask does it reset ? thats it...but you ahve no idea if that guy may not have followed the dos and donts or if he tried doing anything himself etc etc its even the same with a gen.. So why guys think anything that needs a service int worth buying is thinking wrong... a service of any watch every couple of years is a must gen or rep... and who does it counts for a lot.. I have had dozens of asian 7750s straight from the dealers.... only one has been a probem for me.... BUT I have had just as many from members and nearly half had an issue of some kind... Its the same with gens..whether used or new..I had a PAM auto that died on me a week after buying from the AD... it took 3 months to get resolved... so £5K up in the air for 3 months after only a week..and I couldnt just ask for replacement as it was a waiting list item..!! So I think when you compare the values involved in this game then the risks are minimal and even easier to minimise if you are prepared to do it prudently Just finding a watchsmith doesnt mean you wont get shafted ....

Blimey..thats a resurrection.... My 4 year old thread... I have since learnt that a dry lube is best generally ... an oil bath isnt what its cracked up to be and no matter what method I have tried and believe me I have tried dozens from suggestions on the forums ;;;All of them do oil but certainly dont make the metal look any better or more gen like and comparo pics just tend to show how dirty an OTB bracelet can be !! Aand if you want to make a Rolex rep with 316 SS look like a 904 SS then this aint going to help...but I did find out what does... That is assuming your Rolex model is post 904 change over and in turn a 904L bracelet as Rolex did vary the roll out of them.. As for gold plate ...yes mate Oil is generally non corrosive and any oil will be OK but just check the ingredients of it,,...and if its the overall look of the plate you want to bring back up then indeed you can also polish any gold plated steel regardless of quality if you use the correct colouring compound and that will bring it up the finish whether mirrored or brushed without reducing the plate itself...

Absolutely Ken at Bergies.... he will find anything you want if it exists...and what sets him above all the rest (apart from his customer service) is the fact he will not sell you anything that he thinks is cra*p.... So if you send him a pic of something and he says he can get it but the quality isnt good ...he wont sell it to you... he will only deal in stuff that he is willing to put his name too.... Like watches any other accessories are made by makers who supply dealers ...when looking at dealers or sites they are all selling the same stuff from mainly the same makers... And just like watches you get different makers and different qualities of them... Sead can also source you accessories and his stuff is also very good... and again he only sources stuff that he would use himself...and of course he sells watches .. But Ken only sells the accessories...thats his business and thats what he knows... if there is a rep of anything out there that is good quality and good price then Ken can get it for you but anything he cant get then you really wouldnt want it anywway... :)

Suggestions on touching up pencil lead PVD PAM...
PeteM replied to hackR's topic in The Panerai Area
R have you tried the linseed oil trick? I would guess you would have but maybe that might do enough to disguise it Or thinking about it...have you seen that DIY way of doing etching ...using batteries and some wire with a cotton bud.... ? you know the way that doing that makes the SS darken...well that maybe right for a pencil finsih to match it in or take your eye off it without a darker patch up attracting it.. -
Blimey.... that alone should underline why you need to be patient and read about mate... and when you find it difficult just think about what you nearly wasted on that site before you found this place...the differece would cover the price of another watch..

What sort of Hmmm was that? A good one or a bad one? I was never any good at translating Hmmm's

Which versions mate ? The SA is made by 2 makers... however I like them both for different reasons..I have had a few and never had a problem with any of them... I usually always get mine serviced within a few months... I have never heard of any consistent issues with either makers... if you want them serviced and waterproofed in UK contact Alex at UKwatchservices... he is watchsmith on RWI Many guys franken these models as it is quite easy to source the gen parts and relatively cheap... indeed many swap with a gen 7750...plus getting a gen leather or gen diver bracelet really makes this a great rep.. (dial style depending) If you want them modded then Alex doesnt do that ... but Domi or LeWiz in EU will ..plus a few very skilled UK members here will do it for a few people now and again The TAG I know nothing about mate ... without researching it myself Overall the SA movements will do the job you want and will give you a lot of pleasure if its serviced .. OTB they generally perform well and issues are few upon arrival.. it is no more or less risky buying say a HBB King 48mm..that is a 7750 non chrono yet more guys moan about that as the seconds hand can be hacky.. And if you get one or any rep 7750 just remember to follow the dos and donts using an auto rep movement... like winding, date changing and if chrono using the chronos... Something I wouldnt do personally but some dealers do offer a service before sending out...guys like Andrew,Josh and Angus plus I think a few others possibly like TB I aint sure..but you hear mixed feedback on doing that... But SAs are seen regularly on the M2M board and most have been serviced or modded and/or fitted with gen bracelet or strap etc...they tend to be good value compared to what it cost you to do from scratch..but of course depends on your budget at the time of purchase..
-
I like the way you got a reference to a Bond film talking about your Rolex.. As for suggestions mate... I just wondered if you had any bromzy style straps as I really enjoy some of those on Rolexs not just the Black Bays Plus those RubberBs look great on them ..if you know the ones I mean mate?
-
TBH mate...I dont think you are based on your first line... or certainly not with what I meant.. What I was trying to say was that by simply being a chrono it doesnt make it any less or more reliable than other rep movements..if you are basing your choice simply on the rep being a chrono then you will find that there are equally if not more unreliable rep movements that aint chronos...
-
But have you any other straps for those mate? I would just be interested to know if you wear them with other looks... as straps can make such a difference...especially on Rolex's ... Do the RubberBs fit these...I bet they would look nice on that..
-
I just hope you take a look at them all as equals in the first place and then as you research the watch/es that has/ve caught your eye you can make a more informed choice and that you dont end up avoiding some great reps and great choices out of a blanket concern... Knowing the specific issues and flaws etc always helps but until you know the exact watch/model you want it is always hard for anyone to make a judgement...
-
It depends on the versions of the case itself mate and the bracelet.. for example if its a current ZF 312 you have and you buy a bracelet from a current ZF328 then yes..but if its acheaper version of the 328 or another maker like KW then you might have small issues..or if it a KW and a ZF bracelet ..or one of the older version bracelets etc etc But most can be made to fit generally speaking... Can you be more specific on maker and versions? Or just sell the 312 you have and buy the 328 .... They are the same and it might work out cheaper to sell the 312 and buy the bracelet version rather than buy a bracelet with shipping on its own..
-
LOL Cheap trick.... I know which you want to be We need better pics though mate regardless of question ... and I take it you are a more conservative watch wearer..or do you have any other shoes..

Any movement is vulnerable especially a rep of any.. Some are more robust than others ... A7750s with chronos can be as good if not better than an A7750 non chrono it all depnds on servicing and quality overall and using it... there are specific dos and donts with rep chronos or indeed any rep movement... But a blanket statement like that about Chrono V Non chrono has so many variables even in the rep world that to avoid simply on its additional complication is not really a factor... As there are so many other reasons that most rep movements fail... other than its complications and of course it also depends which specific movements you are referring to... As there are many Non Chrono movements and a good few Chrono movements and another good few of chrono movements with non chrono complications and limited chrono functions etc etc plus chronos with modded complications..and non chronos with modded complications... IMHO your reasoning is not defintive enough to justify avoiding them across the board.. just because of their complication or complications... more specific reasons need to be made and specific movements and complications need to be identified and compared before you can simply say avoid one and not the other... For example do you mean an A7750 non chrono comapred to an A7750 with full chrono or a bicompax or a secs at 12 complication or mod or do you mean comapred to manual or do you mean other movements like the 7753s or A07s etc or completely different like the STs or one of the 28**s etc... and do you include other complications like date or day etc The variables are so many it is a call I would never make...

Very sweet...and very tasty...always liked these I like the homaging to so many brands and styles...just above you can see PAMs and Rollie etc... Nice catch mate..look forward to seeing more... Have you seen the new MKII Fulcrum? If not ahve a look mate

1) Generally no..but it is recommended but not always needed on arrival though transit etc can effect the watches running etc 2) It can do that..only a service will resolve 3) Live with it or get it modded/repaired (A tube is the housing that holds the crown stem as it enters the case) 4) These are tubes of metal mainly in PAM straps that sit in the holes of the strap ends and into that gose the lug bars 5) Lumes vary ..generally the better lume is genuine Superluminova..(Military lume can be this or can vary with Tritium ) Reluming is common and is done by modders...but gen lume varies too and so you need to know how a gen looks under charge etc compared to the rep and then decide if you wnat to mod it or even buy the rep because of that) Whether you buy in M2M a modded version or a new one from the dealer depends on the quality and accuracy of the rep you want..some need modding especilly older reps some dont some come good enough OTB (out the box) from the dealer But in all honesty mate this info is available here in all sorts of ways and in all sorts of sections... And to answer your questions yourself you need to either research the basics of a watch and its movement.... and research the specifics of the rep you are after... what the gen is like, how many versions, reviews, etc etc.. It really is all here for you to see and at the least there is enough here to show you what you need to know and then go researching on the web generally..
-
Just take your time mate...it can be very daunting for anyone Just read the link and look at other threads that explain things for anyone new... and visit each section and have a look around... If you are after a PO then have a look at the brand section and look at the threads on there or use the search that forum tool in the right hand side at top of page just enter the key words you are serching for and go from there Once you have seen a few you like nd hve taken some time to research yourself and then have questions ...then please post a thread asking for specific advice and info..it doesnt help to just ask as anew member "who has the best of something" without first showing that you have looked about yourself on here... I am sure you can understand that mate ...

There is of course Reg as mentioned.... But also there is a guy in UK that deals from there... he tends to sell low end stuff but I imagine he can get you certain models if you know what you want... (UKWatches) Then of course there is Sead at Supermirrors... He holds stock of his reps in the UK and he can also ship what you want to his UK guy who can then send it on to you... and you dont pay the premium that the big dealers do... he does list his EU stock in his sectionbut he doesnt always keep it up to date on here so PM him and ask him for what you want...he is also cheaper than the big dealers so you will save money on the reps ...just send him alink to what you want and ask for a price..but if you just wat to know what he has in UK at momemnt then again just PM him and he will send you a list of what is there in stock BUT Nearly all dealers can arrange what they call 'Triangle Shipping'..... by this what they do is ship your rep order to UK and then ship it forward to you wherever you are.... they do charge for this service but they do gaurantee that you will get it And in addition if you check with most dealers before you order they do guarantee your delivery and if it is seized then they will replace it...but you must ask before you order as they may not guarantee on certain countries..
