  1. You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges. You are carrying a Glock .40 and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do? Liberal Answer: Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Does the Glock have an appropriate safety built into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun and what kind of message does this send to society and my children? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me or would he just be content to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for a few days to try to come to a conclusion. Conservative Answer: BANG! Texan's Answer: BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click... (sounds of reloading). Wife: "Sweetheart, he looks like he's still moving, what do you kids think?" Son: "Mom's right Dad, I saw it too..." BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click. Daughter: "Nice group, Daddy! Were those the Winchester Silver Tips?"
  2. Ending the work week wearing my beater
  3. Unless you know otherwise, I would assume the tube is aftermarket & replace it with a gen (& matching 6mm crown).
  4. Repainted gen '42 dial. The original face was patina-ed to s-h-i-t, so I decided to have it (professionally) repainted in white. And here
  5. Search ebay for Acetimer (my oldest winder is 4 years old & never had a problem with any of them).

Not to worry. They all get the details wrong. Remember, I had to hand-paint the markers on my black MQ dial
  7. On most rep watches, the valve is nothing more than an engraving or etching on the (out)side of the case. A working He valve consists of a hole through the side of the case into which a functional valve is placed (read this for additional details). Whether the valve meets Rolex specs is another story altogether. Anyone actually performing deep or saturation diving should not put their life into the hands of a franken watch.

cc33 - I know these pre-assembled frankens are controversial (due to their high cost vs value of gen counterparts) & it is a beautiful timepiece, but I have 2 comments that I think bear attention - 1. The square index markers should be unpainted/mirrors on white Newmans (they are only painted black on the black version). 2. The movement looks pretty, but I would encourage you to have it professionally overhauled (disassembled, cleaned, oiled & timed) asap. Otherwise, enjoy it.
  9. In my experience, for most women, you cannot go wrong with a designer brand watch (preferably quartz). Chanel, Dior, Cartier, etc, all likely to produce a good reaction.
  10. I am with you on the platinum choice, but you cannot lose either way. That is some inheritance.
  11. Nice work on the Hev.
  12. Switching over to my beater for dinner (the CHS's rubber strap is making my wrist sweat)
  13. Thanks, but I prefer the Oyster bracelet for summer (the spaces between links allow air to flow). Unfortunately, the OEM-style Oyster is too blingy for my taste (I do not like the polished center links) & I do not like to modify the appearance of OEM-style bracelets. I keep the Oyster because it is pretty accurate &, who knows, my taste may change someday.
  14. Wore my CHS today
  15. Good to see you back. MBW is still probably the cheapest way to go to produce a credible looking 5513 (I have no personal experience with 1680s). However, it might be worth considering a move up to an aftermarket case, which would negate the need for modding & make it easier to retrofit a gen movement at some point in the future. Yuki's cases look very good & his prices tend to average about half as much as NDT & J&W.
  16. Looks like the standard 1165xx rep case, which is made to fit the (wider than gen) 7750 movement. Read this.
  17. Very definitely shaken, not stirred.
  18. Another take? Nah, that is the last word on the subject.
  19. Read this & then decide.
  20. Left is gen case, but man cannot live by Daytonas only Sorry, I could not help myself
  21. If I had not built these, I could not tell which is the cheap rep case & which is the gen? Here is a profile view of my gen case
  22. I am not sure you have to go gen to end up with a very convincing '42 case. But, if you have the funds, it certainly does not hurt. Also, as was the case with my Phase II build, going gen (case) increases the likelihood of sealing issues, which are not an issue with a well-made aftermarket case (you can just about see the slight fissure in my gen caseback's edge around 7 o'clock)
  23. You have to wonder why this is being parted out & where the dial & handset are heading?
