  1. (...) But I think we can do something about newbies making newbie mistakes. I think a lot of newbies get caught up in the newness and excitement of our little hobby, and make some really stupid mistakes without fully realizing the consequences. Things like trips to the AD, posting on TZ, etc. (...)

Or linking to the manufacturer's website, or any external board that is a foe to this (our) very board... at least that does not have the same hobby :)

Forbidding/inactivating/editing direct links except authorized (like imageshack for instance) would already help avoiding simple curious to have a glance here (just by clicking on the referers of their website).

But... are we (am I) having a mod's brainstorming ? Maybe we're already speaking of things which are beyond our prerogatives. :g:

  2. I don't like the concept of noobs and veterans (we're all noobs in something and veterans in others). But I like the idea of protecting anyone from beeing scammed while holding a certain confidentiality at the same time.

I also like the idea of setting complete rules (whatever they are, and possibly strict, but that's my point of view) so that anyone is framed by the admins/mods will of what this place should be.

If they want it to be an agora where everyone can say anything freely, then let it be so. If they want it to be a place where reserve and discretion are key behaviours, let it be too.

That's maybe the missing thing here : what should this place exactly be ?

Now my very humble feeling : I would love it to be as ever, but with aggressive people and/or trolls having no room to move, for the community's sake.

  3. Hi,

I don't always agree with TTK's point of views, but I must say that here I consider everything he said is right and wise !

(although he does not need me to approve his words ^_^ )

I don't want to provoke any conflict, but how many times have "trolls" not been stopped ? I love this place, I respect mods and admins (for I have also been mod and admin during 3 years), but I feel (wish) they would sometimes be stricter.

Free expression of opinions is a right in the real life, but it does not have to harm the community's interests.

No offense in my opinion, just a (not so more) secret wish.

  4. "Im sticking with chronoless auto movements or good hand wind moments and the replica fraternity need to do the same."

That's why I bought the non-chrono Link with the ETA 28XX movement. Better odds. Not as stunning as the chrono, but very nice, none-the-less.

    Hi,

sorry for purists...don't forget quartz as an alternative. I have a TAG SLR Quartz (that does not exist as a gen), but what a nice watch, and no worry about servicing (look at my review in my siggy).

Why don't manufacturer think more about quartz when it comes to Chrono ?

Accuracy in replication ? Well... If the movement is hidden, I think it's worth investigating.

(...) what do you think will happen? Will they just stop making chronograph replicas altogether or will they start putting Quartz in the next gen of SuperReps?

Would you be against that ?

I know I'm still a noob, but I do love watches (more and more since I am wandering here)... And I would be ready to spend a bit more money (200-400 dollars) if I wasn't scared by the movement dying before it should. Maybe that's the reason why I only owe "cheap" reps...(except maybe the Overseas and the PP chrono with ST-19)

I would love to buy all these recent unaffordable beauties : but hell, something prevents me to do so, it's called 7750 :black_eye:

  5. Hi again,

    I've been on ETA's website.

What I understood is that the 2824 will handle hours/min/sec and date, whereas the 2834 will handle all the same + day. Which is actually useless for the Overseas. So it's probably just a question of availability while producing.

The other issue seems to be the size of the movement.

Still do not know however what is the difference with the advertized 2836 and also why the delivered movements are gold and not silver. Is this just a decoration issue, or a real difference in the quality ?

    Cheers.

  6. Hi,

I have recently bought the VC Overseas, advertized with Swiss ETA 2836-2.

By having a look at the dealers different specs, I see that the model of ETA movements may be different.

    Joshua, Silix : ETA 2824

    Brandon, Andrew : ETA 2836-2

    supposed to be nickel plated

I got mine (1st pic) from Brandon with a 2834-2, same as Stephane who got it from PT (his pics are much better >> see second one).

Can someone explain the difference between these (I had a look around but did not find this topic to be treated already).

Thx for a prospective horology lesson. ^_^
