Thanks for this honest response! My first thought is why not? Have you heard of Han van Meegeren? He's the painter-hoaxster who was so upset at critics mocking his own talent, that he went about faking some of the great painters of the Dutch Golden Age -- Vermeer, Hals, ter Bosch. In his famous post-WWII forgery trial, he was accused of having sold Dutch intellectual property to Nazis, so he had to admit that he himself had forged these masterpieces, and painted another from his gaol cell! There are still some of his forgeries around, and they command interesting top prices in certain underground circles, I hear. You could be him! Exactly. As long as people have been in the presence of genius, they've wanted to cash in on it, or not even that -- to try to see if they can create something so like, that even experts cannot distinguish the original from replica. Have you noticed how modders in this business are very competitive? Ego plays a huge role, Avitt. Go for it!

This post was inspired by a mordant thought on my part, about the fate of rep watches after one dies. But bear with me, it's more intricate. I was also watching the American version of Antiques Roadshow recently, when I noticed hyper-blond appraiser Leigh Keno wearing his JLC Reverso Duo so loosely, the face was sitting on the side of his wrist! Ugh, I hate that. Then, a bracket clock from the late 1700s was appraised, and it was valued at about U$5,000. Not a heck of a lot for such a vintage clock, and a beautiful one at that. The thing that brought down its value, is that there was no mark from the maker believed to have made it (in and of itself, not so rare, as trademarks weren't as usual until the mid-1800s). Was the intimation that someone had duplicated this clock using a well-known watchmaker's design? Was this the first rep clock in the world? My thoughts then turned to my old Tag Heuer Link (which I posted in By-Tor's Tag Eyecandy thread) and Cartier Tank reps, which I bought, oh maybe 17 years ago, when I was holidaying in Morocco. They're rusty, but they do run, and I haven't thrown them away. So, long story short, questions: What fate do you foresee rep watches having in your own lifetime? Will you keep them as curios in your collection, in effect making them antiques*? What is the age of your oldest rep watch, and why have you kept it? *Remember, an antique is any material good over 25 years of age. Just 8 more years. (Hmm, just asked my mother when we went to Morocco...might have been a little later than thought)

There you go, the perfect answer. I think very few rep owners in this board, at least, are smarting for money. Most of seem to have a nice lifestyle, and that requires a fair bit of excess cash. But I also reckon few or none of us are multi-millionaires. As my mother says, middle-class people have to make choices. You can't have it all. And unfortunately, yes, society will think less of you if they catch you wearing a rep watch. My thoughts have turned a bit sad today, because of my personal circumstances and reading Laz' terrible post. I thought, what if I die suddenly (toi toi toi)? When they inventory my possessions, they'll find any number of wonderful watches. And then all my relatives and friends will hear (as these things tend to get out) that dear old Vic also had a fair amount of fake watches. Will they applaud my "sticking it to the man" cynicism? Will they think I was secretly a slimeball? I'll never forget Raymond's pain in that shop, when the watchshop owner held his gaze for 10 seconds, judging him...well, not all people were meant to be rep watch owners, perhaps, if such guilt and concern of judgementalism is involved. I'm speaking of myself, here. Anyway, I've turned this morbid post into a positive. Let me post my idea.

Wow, I actually agree with everything you said. Not a first, but unusual enough to mention. But you know...the charity angle, even if I read a quote about Hublot having been cynical regarding its implementation, is not bad. It reminds me when people complain about millionaires donating money just to name a hospital ward after themselves. So what? Let them. As long as the sick get the money, who cares. I hope Viviane's advisors researched this well. IMHO, it was a savvy move because though HBBs are completely fashion watches, they are VERY MUCH IN FASHION now. Thus, they may well just sell a lot, providing revenues for the charity. Should I ever buy a rep of this watch, if it is ever made, sure why not, I'll give a little anonymously to the charity.

Start Of The Week Wrist-Check (22-23 Oct. 2007)
Victoria replied to Victoria's topic in General Discussion
Wow! I think this is the first time I've seen an LE SMP 007 on Wrist-Checks, Pix. How do people react when they see it? Not a complete favourite of mine, but certainly you couldn't have chosen a better combination -- that woolly black sweater is the perfect contrast to the intricate design. Congrats! @Stephane: Rrrr, too. I love woolly tops on men. -
Laz, I am so very sorry for your loss, and for his family's loss. Juraj looked like a handsome fellow. My prayers to all...RIP.

Very nice find, AMK000! Thanks for that. Maybe there should be a sticky with all the one-marque related sites (Rolex-only, Panerai-only), even if we have caveats about not posting about reps there?
-
Get outta here! 8" wrist, you? You must be a big boy, TWP, because by your Wristies I thought you were Orlando Bloomish. P.S.: WELCOME BACK!!

How about the bracelet then, smartypants? Come on, give me a little credit! -
How can I un-stick the crown on ETA 45mm UPO?
Victoria replied to itreeman's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
I'm just interested in knowing if itreeman is related to jfreeman. Bling bling. -
What are you missing, Viennawatch? The only good thing on German TV is Tatort, and you guys get that on ORF, I'm sure. No offence, but whew, I thought French TV was boring, until I remembered German shows as a kid. Amen! Also, you can d/l any programmes you miss on Bittorent. Not that I have ever done such a dastardly thieving thing, of course. I mean, rep watches yes, but ripping off NBC, nyet.

She has great taste in watches and boyfriends, I see.

Sure, that's fine. But the problem is that I have all the information I require about anti-scams on the 3 forums I frequent. I personally would be stretching myself too thin, attention-wise, if I added a 4th to my list of daily haunts (I don't frequent RWG1 or TRC for that very reason). I wish you well over at the new site, nevertheless.

Congrats Deltatahoe!! You're one of my favourite people here, and worth every post.

Okay, I'll be less coy and actually list the url. http://maldwatch.com/watch.php?type=1 The original site url was incorrect, which is another "tell" these are not to be trusted. (Dunno if listing this site is allowed by Mods. Please delete if I've been a baaaad girl) @POTR: Well I'll be a gobsmacked numpty, POTR. Same scammers, I mean! owners, indeed. Thanks for the heads up.

 Oh God, I can almost write a screenplay about this. 007 as played by Sean Connery buys a rep Rolex in person, and Gert Fr

Oh snap. Is it someone/site we know already? Not Globalreplicas.com, BTW.

(Small background: Found this site when I was Googling to see if the PAM 063 had AR or not. No, I don't intend to buy from them, OBVIOUSLY, but their site descriptions looked amusing enough to share) What raises your hackles quicker when perusing a Replica site? Is it bad photos, bad descriptions, or my personal favourite, awkward English which sounds as if your Russian babushka translated it? Check this out. "Welcome to Replica-watch-ShinyXXXX.com! Yeah, nothing engenders more trust in me than the ultra-professionalism of a site winging it on Babelfish. I'll find my Man Watch elsewhere, thankyouverymuch.

Though I just came in favour of variety, I'll just say that having a sister forum IS a bit confusing. Direct competition is more like it. RWC however, and I'm sure Piratedzeus will give us info if that's the case, is an anti-scam site, rather than a chatty forum about rep watches, as this one, TRC, or Repgeeks etc. are.
-
Well since they recently changed to .cc like this site, we'll see about that. Just before the change came about, there was a call to donate... As for needing various forums, absolutely. I'm a great believer in variety. The politics you mention is only relevant to those of us that are solidly entrenched in one or another of the forums. I do have to say that I trust RWG's Mod team more than any other. They are neither suck-ups, nor do they hesitate to chastise even well-known collectors, if they see fit. And, of course, there is much less drama here. However, each forum has their own dynamic, and I'm happy that's the case.
-
Dino, if you have previous experience with other collectors, I'm guessing you bought this from a member because a collector like Andrew would surely ask to replace or service the watch, even two months gone, as one example. Since Flav's retirement as a modder, we have Vaccum left Stateside, TTBOMK. Try PMing him. Good luck! (And yes, I'm aware my "Good luck" has become a Klinkish, "Life is good")

Vintage Omega Speedmaster, on NASA strap? And I knew you were intelligent. You must be an aeronautical engineer, or some such. EDIT: Looking closely at your photo, that sissy Mary AD-assistant wearing that rep Sub never stood a chance. You look like a manly man!
