  1. I think that is what really galls me.. .that and the lack of input from most of our major dealers.
  2. "I don't wanna talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! "
  3. Followed by... "Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you"
  4. Thanks, very impressive reviews. For a hack amatuer like me, this might just do the trick.
  5. It is curious... All along, I have been wondering why someone would put misleading advertising out there, knowing that at some point one or more of our experts would open a watch and inspect its movement. It is one of the reasons I thought this was perhaps a nondeliberate miscommunication resulting from a language barrier, but i am feeling very uneasy about that now.. expecially considering the lack of input from dealers other than Neil and Jay.
  6. This is very tempting... any other opinions on this?
  7. Thanks for stepping up and addressing this information head on.
  8. "who's on first?... I don't know... third base...!"
  9. Perhaps true, but I think you can build ANY case like this through selective choice of the facts you use. For instance: 1. New York City has 11 characters 2. Kabul has 5 characters (Afganistan is a country not a city) 3. Saudi Arabia (where 19 of the bombers came from) has 12 characters 4. Osama bin Laden has 13 characters 5. Ramsin Yuseb has 11 letters but that is a seldom used pronunciation of the name. In fact, I cannot find it ANYWHERE on the internet accept at sites that promote these erie facts. More common pronunciations are Yousef, Yousef or Yousseff Ramzi, and he was not involved in 9/11 6. Rudy Gullianni has 14 characters 7. September 11 is the 254 day.. 2+5+4 = 11 8. March 11 2004 is the 71st day 7+1 =8 and 3+11+2+4 = 18 (using logic from 7.) 9. The tragedy of Madrid happened 912 days after the Twin Towers incident (people are forgetting about a leap year) 10. the 9.11 Quaran verse quoted is perpurted to be false. (I am not an expert, but google this and see what you get) 11.The first flight to hit the twin towers was not Q33 it was AA11. Q33 was not a 9/11 flight number 12. Flight 77 carried 64 people (6+4+10) not 65 people beat me to it.
  10. ... or something like that... I suspect the real reason has to do with stricter "know your customer" guildlines being imposed on financial institutions as a result of more stringent applications of the Patriot Act, and concerns over money laundering. While Paypal and the like are technically not regulated banks, they use banks to settle their financial transactions, and as such are probably under a lot of pressure from the banks that service them to adhere to sticter standards on the opening of new accounts, especially merchant accounts. Banks are far more diligent about this stuff now, and I suspect they are pushing this discipline down to their paypal-like clients as a result of pressure being put on them by US regulators. I do not know this is the reason for sure, but I am kinda in this industry and I do know this is a big deal for banks to deal with.
  11. Well said. That troubles me as well.
  12. Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. For instance, it may very well be customary in China to refer to an Asian copy of an ETA movement as an "ETA movement" ... what we see as a brand could also have an idiomatic defintion or generic use we are not familar with. We do it all the time here in the states... refer to "Kleenex" generically to denote tissues, "Google" as a verb and "Advil" to denote all forms of Ibupropen. "Xerox" is another example.Remember these guys are dealing with a diverse multi-tongued global market. Having said that, I will admit that to having a hard time rationalizing the use of "ETA 2892" or any other ETA brand generically, and the absence of input from one or two of our more notable dealers is not helping. I can certainly see where you would consider 'generisizing' the ETA brand as a streatch, and I agree with chrystal cranium, the term "copy" really needs to be used here. I also have to admit that I love the Fawlty Towers analogy.
  13. For my part, comments regarding language are meant to illustrate that for non-native speakers cultural differences in the way language is used including idioms, slangs and colloquilisms, represents a significant challenge. Anyone who has regular exposure to non-indigenous speakers, including myself, can attest to that. This board represents a virtual, global market, and although the rules specify that English be used exclusively I beleive we should be willing to make allowances for globality and the difficulty non-native speakers might encounter with respect to the use of language. I agree with the rest of your post.

  15. All good points Also a good point. I said early on in this thread that we need to make allowances for language and cultural differences understanding that for much of our membership, dealers included, English is a second language. Further, I will agree that for the most part our dealers deliver good value... I have not yet had a problem with anybody. But clearly, the marketing component of the sales process needs some work. The terminology is at best non-intuitive and perhaps even mis-leading (even if not intentionally so) . It blew my mind to read the difference between an ETA movement, and a Swiss ETA movement. And you should not have to be an engineer to understand what "1:1" means. And now the issue of super-lume just popped up. Clearly a signficant portion of our membership not getting what they think they are getting when they buy something, and that needs to be addressed and corrected. Others on this board have chalked this up to the relative inexperience of some members, and lack of research. I do not think we can take that leap of faith any longer. We just need clarity and intutive language and we will be OK.
  16. yes you did. my mistake... I would still like to hear from a couple of others...
  17. I would love to hear from some of our dealers (other than Neil) on this. The silence is sending a message you may not intend for it to send. This really needs to get cleared up.. I do not think it is going away.
  18. "... she turned me into a newt.... I got better"
  19. I agree of course that you need to research before buying a movement you are unfamilar with.. but the issue here has been addressed in the 'white lies.."thread, i.e. buying a movement that you think you know, only to find out is is not the movement you thought it was (Abbot and Costello have nothing on me!)
  20. Never heard of it before today, but found this review. It is a year old though... http://www.my3cents.com/showReview.cgi?id=15163 This thread is kinda interesting as well... http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=28087 Good luck
  21. If that is true, why say ANYTHING about the movement in the marketing.. just say it makes the hands go round and round and be done with it. The fact is the term 'ETA 'is used by dealers to infer value.. most consumers on this board view 'ETA' movements as being highly desireable, and many are willling to pay a premium for the luxury. Dealers cannot very well talk about how great ETA movements are when they are selling the watches, than turn around and say 'what difference does it make' when they are challanged about them.
  22. I have had a 2892-3 for close to a year. If it were any more accurate, it would be a quartz.
  23. it is indeed!! i should add that!!! or maybe just go with "... sonnnyyy boyyyy...."
  24. Perfectly said, especially the comment on self-policing. Let's not lose site of the fact that this is a community and as such we have the ability to set norms and standards, by pushing back when it looks like things are over the line. Peer pressure is to always such a bad thing.
