  1. It is the dial that scares me on this one.
  2. Kye- You have put together a breath taking collection and with fabulous straps to boot. Wear them well. I am very jealous but in a good way. This is the year I aspire to put together a couple of original movement vintage PAM's.
  3. Teeth on the case? You guys are killing me. Here is mine: If I could just fix those damn A's.
  4. Not only is the 289_ series a great movement but it is one where there are a number of great modules made by ETA (PR an GMT), Jacque Droz, etc.
  5. Exactly what Marco said. It is a great movement from an engineering perspective but they still could not achieve the same functionality as the 2892. His comment in the excerpt refers to the fact that the button is not an He valve but rather the date adjuster. And by the way I have two watches with that movement and they both needed adjustment to make the PR work properly. So the movement may well be an excellent movement but somehow the manufacturers are doing a poor job of assembling them. This was not true on either of my 2892's. Then again they are more expensive and perhaps the rep makers care as they don't want returns.
  6. Interesting and disturbing post. I assume they did this to save money. When you have spare parts laying around...
  7. Dadog- You are absolutely right. I simply lump all Asian automatics into the 21j category. That movement is a better movement than the standard 21j. But it obviously is not as good as the 2892 as you need another button to get the same functionality. Another place for water and dirt to creep in.
  8. It is a 21j Asian variant and a good value. The major criticism is that this particular movement requires a date adjuster on the side of the case and the gen uses a 7750 with PR module and the date is adjusted via the crown. Ergo, there should not be a button on the 9 o'clock side of the case.
  9. Bulbs are much more expensive but they last a long time and the amount of electricity consumed is less. That is why they are called "low voltage" (I think).
  10. Wow, no respect for the original watchmaster cyclops.
  11. No one is only going to make 5. The market will be flooded in no time. There will be 100x the number of gens n rep form. So starting 2 weeks from now I will always assume if someone is wearing it it is a fake. Does look good though.
  12. Well I have an expensive solution to your watches looking better at the jewelry store. Just redo your whole house with low voltage halogen. They are a pain in the neck to change the bulb (you need to wear gloves) but all your watches will always look better. When I redid my home I did change it all over and it even lowers your electric bill. That AD is not just using that lighting to make his wares look better. It is also reducing his electric bill. PS It also makes your wife's jewelry look whiter.
  13. Well, all you naysayers on the gen crowns should be feeling pretty silly right now. Relume, Lello datewheel, aftermarket cyclops and a gen crown and life is pretty sweet on this one (assuming the dial is good color and the caseback is fairly accurate). B- Thanks for pointing this out.
  14. Slai- Where did you pick up the deployant?
  15. Looks great Rolli. I am curious what mods you did. Am I hallucinating or do I spy a touch of solder on those lugs?
  16. There were two versions of the datewheel - thick and thin. The thin work on both watches and I have them on both a 1680 and 1665. The initial ones we had sent to Rob, if I remember correctly, were the thicker ones. The other element is tremendous variation on movement /dial spacing on MBW's. No two are the same. So basically it is potluck.
  17. I have to agree with you. The 6152 (which I can now say I have seen it in the flesh) is a stunning project. The attention to detail is wonderful. It came out beautifully and is truly both a labor of love and a work of art. I was actually wondering who had resurrected the original 3646 post. Only after I had posted in it did I notice that the original post was done ages ago. M has very carefully researched all of the vintage details and as a result his projects are truly one of a kind. M - Wear it well.
  18. I have never seen one as that is not how the gens were made.
  19. I don't remember what the mark-up to the AD's is on Omega. They are probably buying somewhere between 50-60% of retail. Unless you are after a brand new model I would look for a used one as you can probably get it closer to 50% off of new. Take a glance at Timezone and Watchnet. You can find new pieces with the 30% + discount.
  20. Glad you are enjoying it. Wear it well.
  21. IMHO, it's all in the dial. You can replace a crown, adjust a cg, relume, etc. But you can't change the "A"'s or the logo and in general you can't replicate the overall look of a dial. And in the case of the historics you can't get a proper crown guard either. TK- You have bought a timeless classic. Enjoy it.
  22. Glad to see you are enjoying it. I would echo other sentiments that it is a pretty watch but the down side on this particular rep is the date adjustment on the side of the case. Panerai has never had a case with that or any button on that location so it unfortunately screams replica. Has anyone actually successfully transplanted the watch into a new case. I tried on a typical 21j brushed case but it was going to require remilling and/or a new spacer ring. If anyone has successfully done it please let us know which case you used.
