By-Tor
Excellent job as usual Z. I always enjoy reading these reviews. Rolex asking $1K to service it? That's ridiculous. Tudor Subs can be easily found for $1K in good condition. Perhaps not this particular "Sugar hour marker" model though. That's a lovely watch indeed!!! Thanks for sharing this, great read! ubiquitous
Holy smokes! Excellent stuff, Rob! You worked some real magic on that one!
alligoat
Excellent job Rob! Kinda like CPR, you saved the life of an old watch! BTW, is the crystal a 127 like the old 1680's or is it different?
Pugwash
And personally…..I think I did as good a job as Rolex would have done… You know you did better than Rolex would have done, right? They'd have replaced stuff with other stuff, making it a lot less of the same watch you started with. You brought it back to life.
RWG Technical
Dont' quote me on the Rolex price, I think that is what I was told, I could be way off... I am sure Rolex would be more than I was... As for the crystal, it's a plastic one, as for the model, I cant' remember as I no expert on these crystals. I ordered it from the case number and serial number of the watch... Thanks for the kind words, these projects are so much fun, and the satisfaction at the end of it all, to see the before and after, is well worth it... Jetsons
BRAVO, Rob! That's a beautiful work of art! The Tudor Subs are awesome watches and definitely worth restoring. I'm sure you have one happy customer in your hands! I know I would be. Rlx would have probably swapped out the original dial and hands with whatever left over Tudor parts they had available. They certainly would not go through the trouble of restoring the original military dial & hand. Jet

Watchwatcher
rob, nice pictorial (and nice to have you back), your comment on the cgs is insightful and something many of us should read over and over a few times when we get so fixated on the shape of mod'd cg's --just goes to show that the vintage subs are not as precisely proportioned as we may have thought! RWG Technical
Excellent, excellent, excellent. There is no limit to the magic you can do. Now you get to fix the lume on my 6536 Sub too. That price of $1,000 is spot on. I paid that nearly ten years ago to have Rolex NYC do the same work to a 1680. A word of advice: NEVER tell a Rolex service center to "make it like new". They did, almost. Your work is better. Thanks for the confirmation on the price, so $1000 from Rolex is about right...I bet the turn time is probably not far off either... No problem on your lume, it will turn out really nice, you'll see, I'll post before and after pictures as well... RG
Sherrington
Great refinish Rob. I do love the relume!! As for the CG's here's my modded 1680 ... All my own work too. Just wait till the other little mod, we have recently discussed, is done.
