BigCrown Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Manufacturing the Dome Crystals for PAM 212 and the larger PAM 127 Okay fellas, I thought I would pass along the information I have learned on the latest 1:1 crystal project. Below are the steps that Panerai's sub contractor uses to make one of their crystals. The biggest hurdle, I am told, is the set labeled number 5 above. If the second mold is not lined up perfectly, the whole crystal is considered a 'reject' and is a waste of product. In mass manufacturing like this, a loss of over 5% can be disastrous to the bottom line. This is why (I believe), this project has never been completed to anyway near 1:1 proportions with genuine sapphire. ***** This is how a mineral crystal is made: Obviously, the mineral crystals are easier and far cheaper. But they will break easier.
Watchmeister Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Very interesting info. I guess it makes me feel better about the cost of a gen crystal. Can't wait to see the results on your new crystal.
Fi5herman Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 really delicate process. nice explanation. Thanks.
subbiesrock Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 Fantastic, I had no iea how these were made... All the best with your own crystal project BG
Defender110 Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 interesting. i love technical stuff. all the best with the crystal projects.
Polynomial Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 (edited) This makes me wonder how did DSN make his 'sapphire' 127 crystals, can't imagine a rep maker going through this process Edited February 8, 2011 by Polynomial
Jkay Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 That's fascinating. Thank you for posting this info.
cloner4 Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 dsn crystals are the regular saphire, not anything innovative...Crown is out there doing what NO rep dealer or manufacture has done, this will be true OEM crystal
MikeC65 Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 dsn crystals are the regular saphire, not anything innovative...Crown is out there doing what NO rep dealer or manufacture has done, this will be true OEM crystal What's "regular" sapphire? How is that done?
cloner4 Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 i doubt dsn or any other rep manufacture makes it to oem standards..ie: AR, shape, fit etc..
capice Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 great info, I think it is far too expensive for our dealers to make these unless large quantities
kbiz Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 DSN is far from a perfectionist! He takes the first pass on whatever the manufacturer gives him so he can put that part/build up for sale asap... the crystals use the heated process for all parts of the machining process... so rather than grinding the inner curvature, they further reheat the sapphire and press mold them onto the 2nd form... this is why they have so much distortion... so very much distortion it's more than just a tell it's a joke. This crystal project is one of the most ambitious projects to date... I'll buy a couple just to support the effort!
Fi5herman Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 kbiz, that's true. That's why i hope this project can proceed too. Don't think we can get such gen like domed sapphire anywhere else.
chinsk Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 I too have faith and have ordered a couple 127s and a 212/253 xtal. Really hoping it happens and thanks for the info!
israg Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Is it possible to make the pre-order list or is it already closed?
israg Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Paid and waiting for the final product Cant wait!
cloner4 Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 guys hate to be the bearer of bad news but sadly Crown didnt get enough orders, so the refund process will start soon :( he was a few thousand short and it doesnt make sense for him to fit the rest of the bill, a good and honest guy maybe some other time
